Book Fly Home Little Bird

Download or read book Fly Home Little Bird written by Beverly Shellrude Thompson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fly Home, Little Bird is Beverly's memoir, which focuses on the unexpected consequences of her parents becoming evangelical missionaries. The story arc includes living in a residential school spanning ten years where she was abused by the school nurse and other dorm parents. As an adult she also became a missionary. In her mid-thirties she had the agency to leave the church and create a life outside evangelical communities. Beverly became an activist for reform and change in the policies and practices of reporting abuse of children in mission agencies in both the U.S. and Canada. This included holding a "prayer vigil" at the C&MA's annual conference to put public pressure on them to investigate allegations of abuse (it worked). She has co-founded on-line Facebook groups which have many members from a plethora of mission boarding schools and agencies. And she is one of eight former MK's featured in a documentary, All God's Children. The documentary has been widely viewed in communities of former MK's and their families as well as in churches. Perhaps the most important thread in Fly Home Little Bird is how, with therapeutic help, she changed the web of intergenerational trauma within her immediate family.

Book Vesper Flights

Download or read book Vesper Flights written by Helen Macdonald and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author of H is for Hawk explores the human relationship to the natural world in this “dazzling” essay collection (Wall Street Journal). In Vesper Flights, Helen Macdonald brings together a collection of her best loved essays, along with new pieces on topics ranging from nostalgia for a vanishing countryside to the tribulations of farming ostriches to her own private vespers while trying to fall asleep. Meditating on notions of captivity and freedom, immigration and flight, Helen invites us into her most intimate experiences: observing the massive migration of songbirds from the top of the Empire State Building, watching tens of thousands of cranes in Hungary, seeking the last golden orioles in Suffolk’s poplar forests. She writes with heart-tugging clarity about wild boar, swifts, mushroom hunting, migraines, the strangeness of birds’ nests, and the unexpected guidance and comfort we find when watching wildlife.

  • Author : Ismet Prcic
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

Download or read book Unspeakable Home written by Ismet Prcic and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunningly original, stylistically brilliant, and brutally honest novel from an award-winning Bosnian refugee and writer who, decades after escaping his war-torn home country looks back on his childhood, imploded relationships, and battles with addiction—offering powerful insight into the human cost of conflict. It’s been two years since our narrator divorced his beloved and lost his safest and most adoring home when he fled Bosnia as a teenager. The marriage couldn’t survive his brokenness, the trauma so entrenched and insidious that it became impossible to communicate to anyone outside of himself—even the person he loved most. But, as he writes in the first of many courageously candid fan letters to the comedian Bill Burr, he knows he must try. A linguistically adventurous, structurally ambitious, and emotionally brave odyssey, Unspeakable Home takes us through the memories and confessions of our refugee narrator as he reflects on his bomb-ravaged childhood, the implosion of his relationships, and an agonizing battle with alcoholism. As multiple narrators surface in fragments with increasingly tenuous connections to reality, Prcic unearths the psychological cost of exile and shame with a roving, kinetic energy and a sharp, searching sense of humor. What emerges is a vivid and poignant exploration of the stories we create to hide the deepest parts of our identity from ourselves, as well as a hard-won, life-affirming promise of redemption.
