Book excerpt: From pioneering superstars like Tris Speaker and Rogers Hornsby and Negro League standouts Smokey Joe Williams and Willie Well to present-day luminaries like Nolan Ryan, Texas has played a crucial role in the evolution of the national pastime. The Lone Star love of baseball stretches back to the Civil War. What began as friendly town games led to the formation of the Texas League in 1888, though it would be almost eight decades before the arrival of the Colt .45s, Texas's first major-league team, and another forty-three years until the Astros played in the World Series. From scrappers on the red dirt diamonds to the big-league stars of the Astros and Rangers, veteran sportswriter Clay Coppedge traces the state's long love affair with the sport in this first-ever comprehensive look at Texas baseball.

Download or read book A Right to Life written by Tom O’Keefe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-11-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sitting in the hallway outside of his first grade classroom, young Bobby Dorsey overhears his teacher reporting his misbehavior to his mother, Margaret, through a vent in the classroom door. He is shocked when he hears his mother tearfully confess that he is the unexpected result of a high school affair, that she never intended to have a child, and that he would have been aborted if not for the intervention of his grandmother, a devout Southern Baptist, and her pastor. The unexpected and unwanted birth of Bobby causes Margaret to feel she was robbed of the fun of her high school years. Driven to complete her lost adolescence, she exposes Bobby to a string of boyfriends, with whom she often has a sexual relationship. Bobby becomes aware of those relationships at far too early an age for him to understand what is going on. Some of Margarets boyfriends are cruel and abusive to Bobby. This coupled with his mothers indifference, eventually leads him to feel an outsider in his own home in the small East Texas town of Purvis. His mothers preoccupation with her own life and lack of concern for him causes Bobby to become increasingly curious about his absent father, who he learns is managing a motel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The more Bobby learns about his father, the more his fantasies about him grow. He wonders if he might find the love and acceptance with him that he had not found living with his mother. Therefore at ten years of age, Bobby concludes that Purvis is not a good place for him to be, and that he needs to go live with his father in Chattanooga. So begins a modern Huckleberry Finn tale filled with adventure and intrigue as Bobby embarks on an almost nine hundred mile journey from Texas to Tennessee. He encounters fascinating people, and has several narrow escapes from busybodies who want to take over his problem and solve it for him. Enough people had judged and condemned him. Enough had screwed up his life in Purvis. He wants nothing further to do with the likes of them. His life is now in his own hands until he reaches his father whom he is convinced will be the answer to all his problems. Does Bobby reach his father without experiencing more abuse? Would his father be able to provide him the love and support he never found in Purvis? Does Bobby take the damage from his childhood abuse along with him? This novel deals both dramatically and spiritually with the following current hot topics: The abortion issue, childhood physical, emotional and sexual abuse and prejudice including homophobia. It illustrates how one generations abused become the next generations abusers. It drives home the point that a persons RIGHT TO LIFE is far more than a mere right to birth, showing that love, compassion, understanding and forgiveness are also basic human rights that deserve the same impassioned advocacy seen among current anti-abortionists.

Book Angelina

Download or read book Angelina written by Andrew Morton and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping true story of Angelina Jolie, from #1 New York Times bestselling biographer Andrew Morton. "I like to collect knives," says Angelina Jolie, "but I also collect first edition books." At first glance, she might seem to be someone without any secrets, talking openly about her love life, sexual preferences, drug use, cutting, and tattoos--and why she kissed her brother on the lips in public. And yet mysteries remain: What was really going on in her brief, impulsive marriages to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, and what was going on in her partnership with Brad Pitt? What's behind the oft-reported feud with her father, the Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight? What drove her to become a mother of six children in six years? And—perhaps most puzzling of all—what about the other side of Angelina: How did this talented but troubled young actress, barely 35 years old, become a respected Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations as well as the "most powerful celebrity in the world" (unseating Oprah Winfrey) on Forbes' 2009 Celebrity 100 list? The answers that Andrew Morton has uncovered are astonishing, taking us deep inside Angelina's world to show us what shaped her as a child, as an actress, and as a woman struggling to overcome personal demons that have never before been revealed. In this spellbinding biography, Andrew Morton draws upon far-reaching original interviews and research, accompanied by exclusive private photographs, to show us the true story behind both the wild excesses of Angelina's youth and her remarkable work with children and victims of poverty and disaster today.
