Tributaire de la tradition, la littérature orale africaine a pour fondement initial, l'art oratoire (la parole ou le verbe) dans toutes ses formes esthétiques et éthiques. Riche de sens et de profondeur, elle nous apparait tel un corps de métiers qui participe au progrès multiforme d'un pays. Sur ce, dans quelle mesure les métiers de ladite littérature peuvent-ils contribuer au développement d'un pays dans le contexte de sa mise perspective? Quels en sont donc les enjeux dans une société africaine en pleine mutation? Telles sont les questions qui constitueront l'ossature de notre réflexion. À cet effet, dans l'exercice de cette recherche, on fait recours à la méthode éclectique. Premièrement, il s'agira des Cultural Studies d'Armand Mattelart et d'Erik Neveu (2003), une approche théorique qui permet de revaloriser les cultures africaines et enfin, l'épistémocritique de Michel Pierssens (1990) afin de déconstruire tous clichés réductionnistes à propos des métiers de la littérature orale africaine dans leur rôle de contributeur au développement d'un pays.

Le temps n'est plus où on la définissait négativement, en la caractérisant par l'absence d'écriture. L'Afrique a conservé vivante, plus que l'Europe, la pratique d'un art verbal qui se décline sous plusieurs formes : d'abord, les contes, genre emblématique de la littérature orale ; ensuite, les proverbes et enfin l'épopée. A cela on peut ajouter, sur un mode mineur, les devinettes, les berceuses et autres comptines... Il faut élargir cette vision trop étroite en embrassant un nouvel horizon plus vaste, foisonnant d'une multitude de genres méconnus : chants cérémoniels ou sacrés, joutes oratoires, panégyriques, poèmes corporatifs (cynégétiques, pastoraux, etc.). Une autre idée reçue présente la littérature orale africaine comme fondamentalement passéiste, fixée une fois pour toutes dans des répertoires rigides qui se répètent au sein d'un univers rural archaïque. En réalité, cette littérature, loin d'être figée, est soumise à une variabilité qui fait la part belle à la créativité ; elle est en perpétuelle évolution et sait s'accommoder des réalités modernes de la vie urbaine, du monde politique et du développement. Si les études approfondies sur tel ou tel aspect des littératures orales d'Afrique subsaharienne ne manquent pas, il n'existait pas jusqu'à présent d'ouvrage de synthèse, en langue française, qui fasse le point sur les problèmes théoriques et méthodologiques posés par l'approche de ce champ spécifique. L'ouvrage retiendra l'attention aussi bien des chercheurs en sciences humaines que de tous ceux qui, à un titre ou à un autre, s'intéressent à l'oralité littéraire.

Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

Many of the key commodities of trade are largely invisible archaeologically, being either of high value like gold and ivory, or organic like slaves and textiles or consumable commodities like salt. However, new research on the Libyan people known as the Garamantes and on their trading partners in the Sudan and Mediterranean Africa requires us to revise our views substantially. In this volume experts re-assess the evidence for a range of goods, including beads, textiles, metalwork and glass, and use it to paint a much more dynamic picture, demonstrating that the pre-Islamic Sahara was a more connected region than previously thought.
