Khwe ist aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Sicht eine von sechs Dialektgruppen des Zentralkhoisan. Fünf dieser Dialektgruppen umfassen nach Köhler die Idiome von San-Gemeinschaften, die sechste die Dialekte aller Khoikhoi- und Bergdama-Gemeinschaften sowie einige weitere Sangemeinschaften. Zur Zeit leben ungefähr 8.000 Khwe im Caprivi-Streifen Nordwest-Namibias, in Angola, in Botswana und in Sambia sowie weitere 1.600 in Smithsdrift, Südafrika.
