Cet ouvrage a donc pour objectif de fournir des clés de compréhension de ce que représente la littérature en français langue étrangère – historiquement, théoriquement et pratiquement, dans les institutions à l’étranger et dans le matériel pédagogique. Il s’adresse aux étudiants et formateurs et leur présente, à travers des analyses, des exemples et des propositions pédagogiques diversifiées, des pistes pour faire de la littérature le levier d’une approche renouvelée de la langue, afin de développer des compétences à la fois communicatives et interprétatives, en associant l’apprentissage langagier avec la sensibilité, l’imaginaire et la pensée.

Les situations changent, les objectifs, les méthodologies, les moyens techniques évoluent, mais par-delà ces transformations, on retrouve, sous des formes variables, cette relation entre enseignement de langue et littérature. Après avoir été momentanément sous-estimée dans les années soixante, dans la réflexion didactique en F.L.E., la littérature retrouve de toute évidence son importance dès les débuts des années 1980 et ce « retour » a été validé par l’approche communicative. La publication de nombreuses recherches portant sur l’enseignement de la littérature ou l’utilisation du texte littéraire dans une classe de langue montre l’évidence de la réintroduction de ce domaine dans la didactique du F.L.E. Dans ce travail de recherche, notre objectif est d’examiner s’il existe un décalage, en synchronie et en diachronie, entre les modèles didactiques proposés dans les livres théoriques et les propositions pédagogiques présentés dans les manuels et les fiches pédagogiques des revues spécialisées. Pour réaliser cette tâche, nous avons choisi les livres théoriques de base en didactique du F.L.E., pour connaître les modèles didactiques proposés concernant l’enseignement de la littérature dans les classes de langue. En ce qui concerne les propositions pédagogiques, nous avons décidé de travailler sur quelques méthodes de langue publiées en France entre 1994 et 2005 ainsi que sur des fiches pédagogiques dans les revues spécialisées notamment Le Français dans le Monde.
