This guide explains what is so special about Lithuanian beer and helps you choose the right places to go and the right beers to drink. I've travelled to Lithuania a number of times over the last four years to learn as much as I can about Lithuanian beer, and this book summarizes what I've learned. It describes the various styles of beer made in Lithuania, the main breweries, and where to find the beers. It also gives some cultural, linguistic, and historic background.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the history of the Lithuanian Metrica—the chancellery books of the Lithuanian grand duke—from the formation of its books in the mid-fifteenth century until now. It reveals how the first Metrica books emerged in the second half of the fifteenth century, discussing the titles given to them in different periods in history, and explains why the Lithuanian Metrica should be considered the state archive of early Lithuania. Material hitherto unknown in academic literature about the fate of the Lithuanian Metrica at the end of the eighteenth century, in the last years of the existence of the joint Polish-Lithuanian state, is also revealed in this account. The book dedicates a great deal of attention to the history of the publication and research of the documents and books of the Lithuanian Metrica, which are now kept in Moscow, Russia, as a historical source.

Book The Nazi s Granddaughter

Download or read book The Nazi s Granddaughter written by Silvia Foti and published by Regnery History. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hero–or Nazi? Silvia Foti was raised on reverent stories about her hero grandfather, a martyr for Lithuanian independence and an unblemished patriot. Jonas Noreika, remembered as “General Storm,” had resisted his country’s German and Soviet occupiers in World War II, surviving two years in a Nazi concentration camp only to be executed in 1947 by the KGB. His granddaughter, growing up in Chicago, was treated like royalty in her tightly knit Lithuanian community. But in 2000, when Silvia traveled to Lithuania for a ceremony honoring her grandfather, she heard a very different story—a “rumor” that her grandfather had been a “Jew-killer.” The Nazi’s Granddaughter is Silvia’s account of her wrenching twenty-year quest for the truth, from a beautiful house confiscated from its Jewish owners, to familial confessions and the Holocaust tour guide who believed that her grandfather had murdered members of his family. A heartbreaking and dramatic story based on exhaustive documentary research and soul-baring interviews, The Nazi’s Granddaughter is an unforgettable journey into World War II history, intensely personal but filled with universal lessons about courage, faith, memory, and justice.

Book Anglistics in Lithuania

Download or read book Anglistics in Lithuania written by Jonė Grigaliūnienė and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers offers diverse yet highly professional accounts of multiple cross-linguistic and cross-cultural aspects of English studies in Lithuania. It is valuable for the wide variety of empirical data presented, for the insights into both English and Lithuanian, which, when studied individually, sometimes cannot escape a narrower treatment. Most of the essays in this volume deal with semantics, pragmatics and grammar, while others focus on phonetics and language pedagogy. The collection is also notable for its use of various different methodologies, including triple CL – corpus linguistic, cognitive linguistic and contrastive linguistic – principles of investigation. A particular strength of the book is its focus on the contrastive aspect of study. Further, many of the contributions included here have profound implications for both translation and teaching.

Book The Vanished World of Lithuanian Jews

Download or read book The Vanished World of Lithuanian Jews written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lithuanian Jews, Litvaks, played an important and unique role not only within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but in a wider context of Jewish life and culture in Eastern Europe, too. The changing world around them at the end of the nineteenth century and during the first decades of the twentieth had a profound impact not only on the Jewish communities, but also on a parallel world of the “others,” that is, those who lived with them side by side. Exploring and demonstrating this development from various angles is one of the themes and objectives of this book. Another is the analysis of the Shoah, which ended the centuries of Jewish culture in Lithuania: a world of its own had vanished within months. This book, therefore, “recalls” that vanished world. In doing so, it sheds new light on what has been lost. The papers presented in this collection were delivered at the international conferences in Nida (1997) and Telšiai (2001), Lithuania. Participants came from Israel, the USA, Great Britain, Poland, Russia, Belarus, Germany, and Lithuania.

Book Lithuanian Jewish Communities

Download or read book Lithuanian Jewish Communities written by Nancy Schoenburg and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1996 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume lists, in alphabetical order, the major Jewish communities that existed in Lithuania before World War II. The name of each community is accompanied by information about it: when it was founded, the Jewish population in different years, shops and synagogues, and the names of citizens. An appendix locates each town on a map of Lithuania. Since most of the Jewish communities in Lithuania were destroyed in the Holocaust, this volume will be a valuable tool in recreating a picture of Lithuanian Jewry.

Book The Polish Lithuanian State 1386 1795

Download or read book The Polish Lithuanian State 1386 1795 written by Daniel Z. Stone and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four centuries, the PolishLithuanian state encompassed a major geographic region comparable to present-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, and Romania. Governed by a constitutional monarchy that offered the numerous nobility extensive civil and political rights, it enjoyed unusual domestic tranquility, for its military strength kept most enemies at bay until the mid-seventeenth century and the country generally avoided civil wars. Selling grain and timber to western Europe helped make it exceptionally wealthy for much of the period. The PolishLithuanian State, 13861795 is the first account in English devoted specifically to this important era. It takes a regional rather than a national approach, considering the internal development of the Ukrainian, Jewish, Lithuanian, and Prussian German nations that coexisted with the Poles in this multinational state. Presenting Jewish history also clarifies urban history, because Jews lived in the unincorporated "private cities" and suburbs, which historians have overlooked in favor of incorporated "royal cities." In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the private cities and suburbs often thrived while the inner cities decayed. The book also traces the institutional development of the Roman Catholic Church in PolandLithuania, one of the few European states to escape bloody religious conflict during the Reformation and Counter Reformation. Both seasoned historians and general readers will appreciate the many excellent brief biographies that advance the narrative and illuminate the subject matter of this comprehensive and absorbing volume.
