Book Literature in New South Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Literature in New South Wales Classic Reprint written by G. B. Barton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature in New South Wales In the first place, it has not proved an easy matter to procure the necessary material. No collection, in the interest of the public, has yet been made of the widely scattered mass of books and papers which constitute our literature. Every one knows how rapidly these things are apt to disappear. Newspapers and magazines are thrown aside as soon as they are read. Books too often share the same fate. Thus it happens that, in the course of a few years, it becomes almost a hopeless task to recover these neglected treasures. However absurd it may seem to say so, it is nevertheless true that there is already a field for literary antiquarianism among us, and more than one antiquarian is vigorously at work. The collection made by the late Mr. Justice Wise, imperfect as it is, amply demonstrates this truth. Without the assistance of that collection, the facts gathered together in this work could never have been obtained. Much of our periodical literature has vanished. Portions of it may be found in dusty corners of public libraries, and other portions in the hands of private collectors. Were they thrown together, we should possess ample means for estimating our progress in letters, as well as a valuable source of information on our past history. It is to be hoped that this will be accomplished before it becomes too late to attempt it. Such a collection has already been made in Victoria, where the importance of local publications, as materials for History, is fully felt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First in the Field: A Story of New South Wales "I say, don't, Green: let the poor things alone!" "You mind your own business. Oh! bother the old thorns!" Brian Green snatched his hand out of the quickset hedge into which he had thrust it, to reach the rough outside of a nest built by a bird, evidently in the belief that the hawthorn leaves would hide it from sight, and while they were growing the thorns would protect it from mischievous hands. But the leaves opened out slowly that cold spring, and a party of boys from Dr. Dunham's school, the Friary, Broadhurst, Kent, was not long in spying out the unlucky parents' attempt at house-building and nursery. Still, the thorns did their duty to some extent when Brian Green of the red head leaped across the big dry ditch, rudely crushing a great clump of primroses and forcing them down the slope, for when the freckled-faced lad thrust his hand in to grasp the nest a sharp prick made him withdraw it, while this action brought it in contact with a natural chevaux de frise, scarified the back, and made a long scratch on his thumb. Labillardiere, who was sent in search of the unfortunate La Perouse; and that of M. Peron, who visited Sydney between 1800 and 1804, while upon a voyage of discovery made by order of the First Consul of France in the Southern Hemisphere. This enlightened naturalist's remarks, so creditable to the genius and exertions of the British nation, are suffi cient to shew how astonishingly the colony has improved since Barrington published his History, Voyage, &c. &c. Almost every subsequent navigator, it will appear, has either found out some new islands, or something new in the manners of those already known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Admiral Phillip: The Founding of New South Wales It ought not to lack interest on this account; for it tells the story of the beginning of Greater Britain in the South. Of the personality of Phillip, as we have said, little is really known. He was an obscure naval captain selected by the Govern ment of the time to establish a penal settle ment at the other side of the world. He landed on the shores of a country which, to all his companions, appeared a most forbid ding and unpromising land - one that would never be worth anything to anyone.' Phillip, a few months after his arrival, wrote to Eng land to assure his superiors that it would prove the most valuable acquisition Great Britain ever made.' For these prophetic words alone, the man who uttered them, so far as we can come to a knowledge of him, is worth knowing. Such an understanding of his character as can be gathered by industry of research, this book endeavours to furnish. His parents who bore a good character for their industry, integrity, and general good behaviour, were however, never able to rise to a state of independence, or security from indi gence, owing to their engagement in a law suit with a more powerful and opulent relative, m or der to the recovery of alegacy, to which they conceived they had a legal right. To the narrow ness of their circumstances, the neglect of their son's education and therefore they were incapable of improving, or of giving a pro per bias to those early indications of natural abili ties, and a superiority of talents, which must have inevitably unfolded themselves, even in the dawn of young Barrington's existence. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales A few changes made by the printers deserve to be noted. Catchwords at the bottom of the page, surviving from the Old days Of parchment rolls, and still (or recently) in use in an Old-fashioned review, disappear between the first and second editions; that was a sensible change that was accomplished in a space Of six years. The frequent use Of capitals in old books, still found in German substantives, is on the decline in the abridged edition, and the Eastern Coast of the first edition becomes the east coast of the second. The substitu tion of governor for Governor suggests transatlantic models. The punctuation, finally, has been improved.
