Book excerpt: Fresh on the market, this interactive book helps those musically inclined develop their acumen in sight singing. Organizing each chapter around one musical problem and one rhythmic problem, it contains traditional sight singing materials as well as exercises for composition and analysis, improvisation, and transportation. Beginning with an extensive foreword by an acknowledged expert in the field of music theory pedagogy and aural skills, the book explains how to hear patterns in relation to a tonal center - or, in atonal patterns, how to relate the acquired knowledge from tonal studies to patterns that do not revolve around a tonal center. It presents hundreds of melodies alongside representative works from music literature which are divided in two categories: 1) pedagogically effective tunes that focus on a single problem and include sufficient repetition to insure user mastery, and; 2) melodies spanning the entire range of music literature from the Renaissance to the present day and representing problems in the context of major works of art. It provides warm-up activities that allow users to focus on one problem at a time (i.e., common rhythmic patterns without melodic complications, or pitch patterns without changing rhythms), and offers a variety of ensembles, both newly-composed and from the literature. It also includes an extensive glossary of foreign musical terms and symbols. For musicians, composers, and others in the field of music.

Sight Singing Complete, leads students to this point by beginning with the familiar and moving gently toward the unfamiliar until they are transforming symbol into sound and improvising in all idioms. Book excerpt: The critically acclaimed author of Russian Winter turns her "sure and suspenseful artistry" (Boston Globe) to the lives of three colleagues and lovers in the world of classical music. On a Boston street one warm spring day, Hazel and Remy spot each other for the first time in years. Although their brief meeting may seem insignificant, behind them lie two decades in which their life paths have crisscrossed, diverged, and ultimately interlaced. Remy, a gifted violinist, is married to the composer Nicholas Elko—once the love of Hazel's life. It has been twenty years since Remy, an ambitious conservatory student; Nicholas, a wunderkind launching an international career; and his wife, the beautiful and fragile Hazel, first came together, tipping their collective world on its axis. As their story unfolds from 1987 to 2007, from Europe to America, from conservatory life to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, each discovers the surprising ways in which the quest to create something real and true—be it a work of art or one's own life—can lead to the most personal of revelations. Lyrical and evocative, Sight Reading explores the role of art and beauty in everyday life, while unspooling a transporting story of marriage, family, and the secrets we keep, even from ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Oxford Guide to Choral Artistry, a Kodály Perspective for Middle School to College Level Choirs, is a practical and organic approach to teaching choral singing and sight-reading. The text is grounded in current research from choral pedagogy, music theory, music perception, and cognition. Topics include framing a 1) choral curriculum based on the Kodály concept, 2) launching the academic year for beginning, intermediate, and advanced choirs, 3) building part-work skills, 4) sight-reading, 5) a progressive music theory sequences for middle to college level choirs, 6) teaching strategies, 7) choral rehearsal plans as well samples of how to teach specific repertoire from Medieval to Contemporary Choral Composers. As part of the Kodály philosophy's practical approach, we include two models for learning choral literature. The first is a "Performance Through Sound Analysis" model for understanding Commercial, Global Folks, and arrangement. The second is a "Performance Through Sound Analysis and Notation" model for learning classical music and recently composed music. Both models delineate an approach to teaching a choral work that significantly improves students' musicianship while at the same time, engages the ensemble in learning the overall composition in partnership with the conductor. The final chapter of the book includes rubrics to assess the effectiveness of a choral program. This book does not purport to be a comprehensive choral pedagogy text. It is a detailed guide to helping choral directors at all levels improve the choral singing and musicianship of their students from a Kodály perspective. We hope that this book serves as a resource for choral directors and inspire further conversations and dialogue concerning the application of the Kodály perspective to choral singing. The research for these publications is not presented as exhaustive nor conclusive; it is offered as a foundation. We encourage our colleagues in the field to continue to add to this research"--
