Book Literary Remains Consisting of Lectures and Tracts on Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Literary Remains Consisting of Lectures and Tracts on Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Richard Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Remains, Consisting of Lectures and Tracts on Political Economy The following literary remains of Richard Jones have been collected and published, in the belief that ho was not only a man of eminent practical ability in the important public offices which ho filled, but that also his speculations in political economy were of a valuable and original character; and were so to such an extent, that many students of that subject may be glad to see them followed out further than was done in the works published in his lifetime. As this conviction is the main ground of the pains which have been bestowed in bringing forth this volume, perhaps we may be allowed to endeavor to explain briefly the peculiar character of Mr. Jones's politico-economical philosophy. Tor this purpose we must recal to the reader's mind the aspect which Political Economy had assumed in England at the time when Mr. Jones took up the subject. Book The Political Economy of Mercantilism

Download or read book The Political Economy of Mercantilism written by Lars Magnusson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the days of Adam Smith, Mercantilism has been a hotly debated issue. Condemned at the end of the 18th century as a "false" system of economic thinking and political practice, it has returned paradoxically to the forefront in regard to issues such as the creation of economic growth in developing countries. This concept is often used in order to depict economic thinking and economic policy in early modern Europe; its meaning and content has been highly debated for over two hundred years. Following on from his 1994 volume Mercantilism – The Shaping of an Economic Language, this new book from Lars Magnusson presents a more synthetic interpretation of Mercantilism not only as a theoretical system, but also as a system of political economy. This book incorporates samples of material from the 1994 publication alongside new material, ordered in a new set of chapters and up-date discussions on mercantilism up to the present day. Tracing the development of a particular political economy of Mercantilism in a period of nascent state making in Western and Continental Europe from the 16th to the 18th century, the book describes how European rulers regarded foreign trade and industrialisation as a means to achieve power and influence amidst international competition over trades and markets. Returning to debates concerning whether Mercantilism was a system of power or of wealth, Magnusson argues that it is in fact was both, and that contemporaries almost without exception saw these goals as interconnected. He also emphasises that Mercantilism was an all-European issue in a time of trade wars and the struggle for international power and recognition. In examining these issues, this book offers an unrivalled modern synthesis of Mercantilist ideas and practices.

Book Mercantilism

Download or read book Mercantilism written by Eli F. Heckscher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eli Heckscher's Mercantilism is a classic work in the history of economic thought, economic history and international economics. A pioneer in both economic history and trade theory, Heckscher brought a unique breadth to this study. Covering all of the major European countries, the book explores the content and significance of mercantilist ideas over nearly two centuries. Acknowledging the difficulties involved in defining mercantilism, Heckscher nonetheless succeeded in identifying a set of its key characteristics. Now available for the first time in many years, Mercantilism remains singularly relevant to a world preoccupied with maintaining its trading order. Hecksher's full text, notes and supporting material are supplemented by a new introduction by Lars Magnusson which discusses the origin, content and impact of the book.

Book Assembling the Local

Download or read book Assembling the Local written by Upal Chakrabarti and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1817, in a region of the eastern coast of British India then known as Cuttack, a group of Paiks, the area's landed militia, began agitating against the East India Company's government, burning down government buildings and looting the treasury. While the attacks were initially understood as an attempt to return the territory's native ruler to power, investigations following the rebellion's suppression traced the cause back to the introduction of a model of revenue governance unsuited to local conditions. Elsewhere in British India, throughout the first half of the nineteenth century, interregional debates over revenue settlement models and property disputes in villages revealed an array of practices of governance that negotiated with the problem of their applicability to local conditions. And at the same time in Britain, the dominant Ricardian conception of political economy was being challenged by thinkers like Richard Jones and William Whewell, who sought to make political economy an inductive science, capable of analyzing the real world. Through analyses of these three interrelated moments in British imperial history, Upal Chakrabarti's Assembling the Local engages with articulations of the "local" on multiple theoretical and empirical fronts, weaving them into a complex reflection on the problem of difference and a critical commentary on connections between political economy, agrarian property, and governance. Chakrabarti argues that the "local" should be reconceptualized as an abstract machine, central to the construction of the universal, namely, the establishment of political economy as a form of governance in nineteenth-century British India.
