Book Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages written by Glending Olson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies attitudes toward secular literature during the later Middle Ages. Exploring two related medieval justifications of literary pleasure—one finding hygienic or therapeutic value in entertainment, and another stressing the psychological and ethical rewards of taking time out from work in order to refresh oneself—Glending Olson reveals that, contrary to much recent opinion, many medieval writers and thinkers accepted delight and enjoyment as valid goals of literature without always demanding moral profit as well. Drawing on a vast amount of primary material, including contemporary medical manuscripts and printed texts, Olson discusses theatrics, humanist literary criticism, prologues to romances and fabliaux, and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He offers an extended examination of the framing story of Boccaccio's Decameron. Although intended principally as a contribution to the history of medieval literary theory and criticism, Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages makes use of medical, psychological, and sociological insights that lead to a fuller understanding of late medieval secular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Recreations The President of the Board of Education said the other day that in these dark times we were entitled to draw consolation whence we might, and that there was a legitimate source of con solation in the spread of the reading habit. Mr. Fisher has seen evidences of it in every omnibus, tram-car, and railway-carriage. Even in the trenches, he added, much reading goes on. There are probably few men who, like General Smuts, have studied the Critique of Pure Reason during a raid; but Mr. Fisher has known instances of officers enjoying the solace of Keats and Milton under the hottest fire, and an anecdote is recorded below (p. 46) of a man in the Lancashire Fusiliers who went into battle with a book by Ruskin. Perhaps, therefore, it may not be taken as any sign of undue detachment from the stress of great events that the author of this little book. Book Re mapping World Literature

Download or read book Re mapping World Literature written by Gesine Müller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we talk about World Literature if we do not actually examine the world as a whole? Research on World Literature commonly focuses on the dynamics of a western center and a southern periphery, ignoring the fact that numerous literary relationships exist beyond these established constellations of thinking and reading within the Global South. Re-Mapping World Literature suggests a different approach that aims to investigate new navigational tools that extend beyond the known poles and meridians of current literary maps. Using the example of Latin American literatures, this study provides innovative insights into the literary modeling of shared historical experiences, epistemological crosscurrents, and book market processes within the Global South which thus far have received scant attention. The contributions to this volume, from renowned scholars in the fields of World and Latin American literatures, assess travelling aesthetics and genres, processes of translation and circulation of literary works, as well as the complex epistemological entanglements and shared worldviews between Latin America, Africa and Asia. A timely book that embraces highly innovative perspectives, it will be a must-read for all scholars involved in the field of the global dimensions of literature.

The pieces here collected, none of which has been printed before, were written, like those in the former volume, in occasional leisure from official duties, and make no claim other than may be founded on the hope that what has interested one Saunterer in a library may meet with sympathetic readers outside.
