Book excerpt: On August 9, 1965, 53 men died in the impoverished hills of rural Arkansas. Their final breaths came in a government facility deep underground while their loved ones were at home expecting their return. The incident at Launch Complex 373-4 remains the deadliest accident to occur in a U.S. nuclear facility. The 53: Rituals, Grief, and a Titan II Missile Disaster analyzes the event. It looks at causes but more importantly at how the mishap has affected daughters and sons for nearly six decades. It gives new sociological insight on technological disasters and the sorrow following them. The book also details how surviving family members managed themselves and each other while benefiting from the support of friends and strangers. It describes how institutions blame the powerless, and how powerful organizations generate distrust and secondary trauma. With an analysis of the event and post-disaster life, their children share stories on what went wrong and how they keep moving forward.

Book Historical Developments and Theoretical Approaches in Sociology Volume I

Download or read book Historical Developments and Theoretical Approaches in Sociology Volume I written by Charles Crothers and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Developments and Theoretical Approaches in Sociology in two volumes is a component of Encyclopedia of Social Sciences and Humanities in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty Encyclopedias. Sociology is one of several social science disciplines and smaller bodies of knowledge which seeks to understand the patterns in social life. There is a broad congruence between the objective configurations of social life and the components of the disciplines studying them, the body of sociological knowledge is socially constructed and the pathways to its gaining of knowledge influenced by a variety of factors. Moreover, since social life is ever-changing, sociology often has to scramble to catch-up with the changing social world. This work is built up around four broad topics, the first providing important shared contextual material and then followed by three broad levels of social analysis: with each of these four parts containing a number of chapters with more specific and in-depth information. The theme essay provides a general introduction and overview of the theme as a whole. In total, the work holds 40 contributions written by a selection of many international renowned specialists from 12 countries. It was important to obtain a wide range of viewpoints giving the ways in which social issues arise quite differently in a range of countries. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.

Book Ritual as a Missing Link

Download or read book Ritual as a Missing Link written by J. David Knottnerus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to now, ritual has been under-utilised for studying human behaviour. This book narrows the gap in our understanding of the social causes and consequences of our actions by focusing on the ritualised behaviours that define much of our daily lives. Knottnerus breaks new ground by comprehensively describing structural ritualistic theory. He shows how structural reproduction has occurred throughout the world, how rituals can be strategically used and how power can influence rituals, and how the disruption and reconstitution of ritual is of crucial importance for human beings. This book shows that ritual provides a missing link in sociology and helps us better explain the extreme complexity of human action and social reality.

Book Understanding Collective Pride and Group Identity

Download or read book Understanding Collective Pride and Group Identity written by Gavin Brent Sullivan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective and group-based pride is currently covered across a number of disciplines including nationalism studies, sociology and social psychology, with little communication between fields. This multidisciplinary collection encourages interdisciplinary research and provides a unique insight into the subject, stemming from a psychological perspective. The collection builds upon insights from collective emotion research to consider the relations between collective pride, shame and guilt as well as emotions of anger, empowerment and defiance. Collective pride is examined in contexts that vary from small groups in relatively peaceful competition to protest movements and large groups in divisive conflicts. In the book collective pride is a complex and positive emotional experience evident in the behaviour of groups, that can lead to negative forms of collective hubris in which other groups are devalued or dominated. Emotions of Collective Pride and Group Identity brings together international contributors to discuss the theory, research and practice surrounding collective pride in relation to other emotions and collective, cultural and national identity. Divided into two parts, part one explores the philosophy and theory behind collective pride and its extremes. Part two draws upon the latest quantitative and qualitative empirical research to focus on specific issues, for example, happiness, national pride and the 2010 World Cup. Topics covered include: - cultural and national pride and identity - positive feelings of unity and solidarity - dynamic relationships between collective pride, guilt and shame - theories of emotions in ritual, symbolic and affective practices - collective pride and collective hubris in organizations - perspectives on national events from young people. This book will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience in the area of affect studies and emotion research including social psychologists, sociologists, historians and anthropologists.

  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

  • ISBN : 1000641309

Download or read book Polar Expeditions written by J. David Knottnerus and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polar Expeditions employs structural ritualization theory to show how rituals enriched the lives of crewmembers on 19 polar expeditions over a 100-year period. J. David Knottnerus identifies and compares failed, successful, and extremely successful missions in terms of participation in ritual practices and the social psychological health of crews, finding that that social and personal rituals, such as work practices, religious activities, games, birthday parties, special dinners, or taking walks are extremely important in increasing crewmembers' ability to cope with the challenges they face including extreme dangers, isolation, restricted environment, stress, lengthy journeys, and quite importantly the disruption of those practices that define our everyday lives. Besides contributing to our knowledge about polar expeditions, this research yields implications for our understanding of ritual dynamics in other situations such as disasters, refugee camps, nursing homes, traumatic experiences, and a new type of hazardous venture, space exploration.

Book excerpt: This is the first publication of seventy-five letters from Francois de Callieres (1645-1717) to Marie de Bailleul. Marquise d'Huxelles (1626-1712) from a manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. ms fr. 24983. Most were sent from Holland, where Callieres has been sent by Louis XIV to negotiate what became the Treaty of Ryswick (1697). Callieres is the author of a seminal work on diplomacy, never out of print since its publication in 1716, On Negotiating with Princes, and after the signing of the Ryswick peace in 1697, he became the principal secretary to Louis XIV. Intended to divert as well as to inform, the product of an intimate friendship which was also a political alliance, the letters reveal Callieres to have been a moderate and thoughtful man, an admirer of the Dutch Republic and William III, as well as a loyal servant of the Sun King. He sends Huxelles literary and philosophical observations as well as political and diplomatic news, couched in a lively and spontaneous style. This edition breaks new scholarly ground in a number of areas, and suggests that the political influence of Buxelles and her Paris circle was greater than has previously been thought. Bath situating the letters in historical context, as well as an introduction, extensive footnotes, a bibliography and an index in English, with the letters in the original French.
