Book Oxford Historical and Literary Studies Vol 5

Download or read book Oxford Historical and Literary Studies Vol 5 written by G. C. Moore Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Historical and Literary Studies, Vol. 5: Issued Under the Direction of C. H. Firth and Walter Raleigh Professors of Modern History and English Literature in the University of Oxford They consist of letters in English and in Latin, and poems of various forms (verse-epistles, elegies, odes, hymns, satires, epigrams), with some prose characters' and devotions. In vestigation has shown that some of the poems are poetical exercises merely, paraphrases, in fact, of poems 'of Randolph and Suckling. And no very striking merit can be assigned to those other poems which are more original. But some of the satires have a coarse strength, and other poems illustrate at least the poetical fashions of the day, especially its fondness for 'conceits'. They throw some light on the acts and behaviour of the Parliamentarians and religious fanatics, and still more on the spirit in which Royalists and Churchmen, such as Tubbe, regarded them. The letters bring him in connexion with noble families such as the Wriothesleys, Devereux, Spencer's, and Tuftons, and afford an interesting picture of the life and feelings of a studious Royalist at a time when family ties were broken under the stress of party passions, when Royalists were driven into corners, and the high places of the world were occupied by their enemies. Hitherto the wish expressed by Mr. Thoms has remained unfulfilled. I hope, however, that an account of Tubbe and some specimens of his writings may still excite a little of that interest which Mr. Thorns anticipated for them half a century ago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Impressions of Oxford DO you remember, dear companion of past days so long passed already, do you remember our walks through the arden of the Luxemburg ten years ago is-iappy time when, under the pretence of prepar ing for our examinations we talked of literature, amongst the marble statues in which lives again the remembrance of princesses long since gone! The statues themselves were very ordinary pieces of sculpture, but the names of the queens inscribed on the pedestals made us dream -vaguely. There floated before us on the afternoon air of the spring-time and autumn, the hope of a life so noble and so pure. Our great joy then was to dis cuss art, our worst grief the thought of the uncertainty of the truths of meta physics and religion. Excerpt: ... heart; if they have fewer ideas, they have'T' more passions and more enthusiasms; if they are less prepared to meet objections, they have by way of compensation more-convictions. Being creatures rather of will than of intelligence, they believe in their religion, or totally deny it. The doubts that arise from indifference and scepticism are unknown to them. Scepticism has no effect here either on daily life, or on the life of the mind, or, above all, on the life of the heart. They are more watched over than we are, and their conduct is stricter; if they are guilty of an escapade, they do not boast of it. Jests are permitted, but ribaldry is unknown. They do not worship woman, but they respect her. There is no intellectual elite so strong as ours, but they undoubtedly have a political 6lite, and a much rarer thing, a moral 6lite. Could we pronounce the same panegyric on our French students of the present day? Certainly not; and if a change is coming about, they will certainly owe it to themselves alone; for nothing in the examples they have received, in the books that they have read, or in the lessons that have been given them, have made them understand the necessity of it. Tuesday, May 14, 1895.--How truly English is the scenery on the Isis! Young people read or sleep on its banks; further off young girls, daughters of dons, are preparing the classic tea. Every moment one passes some boats; sometimes a Canadian canoe, which flies by like the wind; sometimes a slimly-built craft, manned by undergraduates, who wear their college arms on their blazers and hats. All these essentially English scenes take place amidst the most purely English surroundings that it is possible to conceive. A double row of trees, which let their laden branches...
