Book Literary Cubism Geography and Plays Selected Works of Gertrude Stein

Download or read book Literary Cubism Geography and Plays Selected Works of Gertrude Stein written by Gertrude Stein and published by Special Edition Books. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gertrude Stein was at heart an artist's writer. She became well-known to the literary mainstream with "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," and was at her most accessible with her speech and autobiographical writing of her later years. It is with collections such as "Geography and Plays," however, that Stein showcased the possibilities of the English language to transcend beyond literature into the realm of modern art. The page was her canvas, and as the Cubist painters of her time treated their subjects, Stein re-assembled words in an abstracted form to present them in a greater context, a context un-tethered by a singular viewpoint. This modern edition contains a massive collection of over 50 different works by Gertrude Stein. In addition to the daring and cheeky "Miss Furr and Miss Skeene," this revitalized edition contains many of her most radical and influential works. There is "Ada," one of Stein's many word portraits of famous personages, this one written of Alice B. Toklas. There is "Every Afternoon: A Dialogue," a conversation between two unnamed people highlighting the writer's playful, often humorous style. Also included is "Sacred Emily," in which the reader finds Stein's most often quoted line, "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose," a line that employs her trademark use of repetitive language to express that things are what they are, but at the same time, so much more. In Stein's view, the simple naming of a thing already invokes the imagery and emotions associated with it-the writer does not need to manipulate the word any further.

While the short book consists of multiple poems covering the everyday mundane, Stein's experimental use of language renders the poems unorthodox and their subjects unfamiliar.Stein began composition of the book in 1912 with multiple short prose poems in an effort to "create a word relationship between the word and the things seen" using a "realist" perspective. She then published it in three sections as her second book in 1914.[1]Tender Buttons has provoked divided critical responses since its publication. It is renowned for its Modernist approach to portraying the everyday object and has been lauded as a "masterpiece of verbal Cubism."[2] Its first poem, "A Carafe, That Is a Blind Glass," is arguably its most famous, and is often cited as one of the quintessential works of Cubist literature. The book has also been, however, criticized as "a modernist triumph, a spectacular failure, a collection of confusing gibberish, and an intentional hoax"

Book Gertrude Stein

Download or read book Gertrude Stein written by Lucy Daniel and published by . This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'You are, of course, never yourself', wrote Gertrude Stein in one of her famously witty autobiographies. In this book Lucy Daniel reveals the many selves that composed Stein's inspiring and captivating life." "Though American, Stein has been celebrated as the embodiment of Left Bank bohemia. She was a patron of modern art and writing, as a gay icon and the hostess of perhaps the most famous salon of modern times, with Picasso, Matisse, Hemingway and Pound among her friends and associates. Yet despite an immense and varied body of work and a writing life that spanned 50 years, she remains one of the most recognizable and yet least-known of the twentieth century's major literary figures." "Daniel shows how the legend of 'Gertrude Stein' was created, both by Stein herself and her admirers, exploring her works, her many notable portraits and her own entertaining anecdotes. From early efforts in automatic writing to late experiments in the art of autobiography, Daniel examines Stein's continued stylistic experimentation, as well as her involvement with turn-of-the-century feminism and psychology, her 40-year relationship with Alice B. Toklas, the cultural impact of her salon in the Parisian expat scene, and the controversy surrounding her life in occupied France during the Second World War." "A fresh and readable presentation of this major American writer, Gertrude Stein gives much-needed attention to the continuing significance and influence of Stein's work." --Book Jacket.
