Book The Associated Work of the Women of Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Associated Work of the Women of Indiana Classic Reprint written by Ida A. Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Associated Work of the Women of Indiana I The watchword of the day is organization. Our national motto, .e Pluribus Unum, is receiving a universal illustration. The spirit of combination, of federa tion, has seized upon the people. The manufacturers have combined to force upward the cost of their goods; the wage earners have federated to increase the price of their labor. The day for great accomplishments through individual ao tion is passing away. We are becoming too large a nation for solitary effort to be crowned with large achievement. One man may be raised up to lead in some he roie undertaking, but he secures its highest fulfillment only by gathering his forces and banding them together for united effort. One woman may hear a divine call! For a special work, but she recognizes that the first step toward success is to carry her message to other women, and associate them with her in her labors. The man who isolates himself from his fellow men is like the hermit in his cave - in; the world, but not of it. Every profession, every trade, has its organization. There are the national bar associations, the famous religious councils, the great medical congresses, the electrical conventions, the literary clubs. The political organiza tions shake the country to its foundations, and shape the destinies of the nation; but they, in turn, are largely governed by the mighty influence of federated labor. It would not be an exaggeration to say that every twenty-four hours witnesses the birth of a new organization. People are coming nearer together every year, and the world is growing smaller. Men and women are awakening into a new consciousness of their powers, and are developing that breadth of view which fol lows a wide association with others. It is a great satisfaction to know what our fellow-men are doing; 'a great incentive to learn what difficulties they have over come, what results they have achieved; a great comfort to feel that we are not alone in our work and our discouragements. It makes us strong to know that others are standing with us, shoulder to shoulder; it makes us noble to come out of our selfishness and join hands with our brothers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Womans Club League, Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1904-1905 In 1892, all the Literary, Musical and Art Clubs, of Fort Wayne, were called together and a federation of clubs was formed, known as' The Woman's Club League. Its com mon purpose was to promote a larger growth of a Civic, Educational, Social and Art Spirit, than could come through the limitations of the smaller Literary Clubs. The results of this movement have been manifold. First, A magnificent Public Library stands as a monument to the first work undertaken by the League, in 1893. Second, Departments for separate working sections were formed, thus serving to bring the numerous clubs into closer and more sympathetic relations. These departments include Art, Domestic Science, Education and Civic Improve ment. In the Art Section - Over one hundred pictures have been placed in the Public Schools. In Domestic Science - An effort to equip a school for domestic science in the New Manual Training School building is being made. In the Educational Sections - Two Traveling Libraries have been formed, to cir culate in the schools in the outskirts. Of the town, and in the Civic Improvement, reforms in sanitation of slaughter houses and impure drinking water have been obtained. Waste paper boxes, placed on the street corners and schools; seeds distributed in the schools for home planting, and prizes awarded for successful flower gardens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Forest Hearth: A Romance of Indiana in the Thirties One woman Of that sort, I knew, Mrs. Margarita Bays. TO her face, or in the presence of those who might repeat my words, I Of course called her Mrs. Bays; but when I felt safe in so doing, I called her the Chief Justice a title conferred by my friend, Billy Little. Later happen ings in her life caused Little to Christen her my Lady Jeffreys, a sobriquet bestowed upon her because Of the manner in which she treated her daughter, whose name was also Margarita. The daughter, because she was as sweet as the wild rose, and as gentle as the soft Spring sun, received from her friends the affectionate diminutive Of Rita. And so I shall name her in this history. Had not Rita been so gentle, yielding, and submissive, or had her father, Tom Bays, - husband to the Chief Justice, - been more combative and less amenable to the corroding influences Of henpeck, I doubt if Madam Bays would ever have attained a dignity beyond that Of Asso ciate Justice. That strong sense Of domineering virtue which belongs to the truly just must be fed, and it waxes fat on an easy-going husband and a loving, tender daughter. In the Bays home, the mother's righteous sense Of justice and duty, which applied itself relentlessly upon husband and daughter, became the weakest sort Of indulgence when dealing with the only son and heir. Without being vicious, Tom, Jr., was what the negroes called jes' Clean and dominated his mother with an inherited club Of inborn selfishness. Before Tom's selfishness, Justice threw away her scales and became maudlin sentiment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
