Book Days and Ways in Old Boston Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Ways in Old Boston Impressed with the interesting changes that had taken place in Boston and its business methods within the last two generations, we began some time since the preparation of a brief pamphlet calling attention to some of these changes which had occurred during the business life of Mr. R. H. Stearns, who founded this business in 1847 and died in 1909. It was our intention to distribute gratuitously this pamphlet (partly advertising and partly historical) among our customers. As the work progressed, however, we found so much of interest which had occurred in the year '47 and so much of Boston history which was connected with our present location, that the original plan of a small booklet was abandoned. Moreover, competent judges advised us that the material thus collected was of more than passing importance - most of it indeed being of real historic value - which could not fail to interest a much wider circle of readers. We therefore decided to eliminate the advertising matter (unless occasional reference in signed articles or illustrations showing some of the changes which have taken place at the historic corner where this business is now located could be so construed) and to print in permanent book form the material which had been collected. This volume is the result. This volume is the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Romantic Days in Old Boston the Story of the City and of Its People During the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romantic Days in Old Boston the Story of the City and of Its People During the Nineteenth Century We Americans have a curious habit of dating back our heroes and of refusing the stamp of authentic valor - at least in our histories - to any act of moral or physical courage which has happened since the. Revolution. John Hancock we glibly dub "patriot" though he never fought at all, and in many ways is admittedly a man of pretty small calibre. It seems never to have occurred to those in charge of the spiritual sustenance of our youth that, beside William Lloyd Garrison, Hancock shrinks to really pitiful proportions. Webster's "Bunker Hill Oration" we read, to be sure, but the emphasis is always put upon the Bunker Hill rather than upon the Webster. And I never heard the name of Wendell Phillips pronounced during the years in which I prepared, in the Boston public schools, for college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Miscellany of Literature and Fashion, Vol. 1: January to July, 1842 A book is a letter to the unknown friends one has in the world. Wrrn this Number we must greet you all as new acquaintances. The hand which is offered to you, you will grasp with such warmth only as your expectations, your hopes, and more than all, your kindness may dictate for we have none of the recol lections of past meetings, no pictures of past scenes, no allusions to former inter course to draw upon. Like a stranger We seek to join your company, and our wel come, if given to na at all, must be given in kindly trust and hape, as a voluntary credit, to be drawn against hereafter. If, as we hope, our companionship shall be continued, - if we are permitted, month by month, to become the sharer of your happy hours of rest and recreation, to be known as a tried friend, cherished for his willing ness, whatever may be his success for the moment, another character may grow around this now new relation; and time after time, the grasp of our hands shall grow firmer and warmer, than it may be in the days of our mutual ignorance of the newcomer, at this first introduction. Book The Boston Charades Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Boston Charades Classic Reprint written by Herbert Ingalls and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Charades The cleverest charades in the English language are, beyond doubt, those of that illustrious writer of soci' ety and other fine verse, Winthrop Praed. His charades are neat and ingenious, and are likely to maintain their superior position for some time yet. One of them, happily disguising the name of a noble poet, has been frequently cited for its Spirited movement and its simple literary excellence. Another of them is even now without a solution upon which all readers agree. In the present original work, it has not been attempted to rival the brightness of Praed; but it is confidently believed that these examples may furnish considerable entertainment, and, incidentally, some instruction; that they may give pleasure around the evening lamp of home; in the friendly competition of party or of club; in the sweet idleness of summer days by the seashore or among the hills. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Town-House of Boston From the infant days of the struggling puritan settlement, gathered upon the Peninsula of Shawmut, nestling in the low land lying between Beacon, Fort and Copp's Hills, and follow ing the water line of the Town Dock, now'covered by the pres ent Quincy Market and streets abutting upon it even farther inland, this site has, been one of central interest. Here, upon land now forming the present corner of State and Dev onshire streets, the fathers of early Boston consecrated with prayer and psalm, their first religious edifice, and it was here, also, that they first held their deliberations upon the conduct of their temporal affairs. As early as 1634, according to an unquestionable authority, a parcel of grwd, definately rec ognized and described in the Book of Possessiom, under date of eleven years later, was set apart as a market place. This estate, the area of which has never been curtailed or widened, is to-day intact, enclosed within the walls of the Old State House. It seemed to her that the fact of her having seen the capital of Rhode Island would in a way establish her as a traveller, and would atone for her not being familiar with Boston. Her Uncle George had taken her to a restaurant in Provi dence and they had each had an oyster stew. She often mentioned this stew as being one of the most delicious dishes she had ever tasted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches and Reminiscences of the Radical Club of Chestnut Street, Boston Any details of meetings or discussions which have had a marked influence, or have indicated the growth and tendencies of public opinion, cannot but be interesting. This conviction has led to the collection of some of the essays given at the Chestnut Street Club, with a sketch of the discussions which followed their reading. The volume has been made up from the recollections of friends, from notes and reports made of the meetings; and while I fear it will be found fragmentary and imperfect, still it is my hope that the words here preserved of many distinguished members of the Club, some of whom have now passed from among us, may prove not only of interest but of value to the reader. That was what during all my youthful days I thought about, dreamed over, wondered at. In childhood so little suffices to create a mystery. A locked door, a darkened room, a lowered voice, and immediately all the undeveloped love for the unknown leaps to the fore, the more eagerly because it has so little to feed upon, and because all the emotions are, as yet, fresh and unplayed upon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dane Walraven: A Tale of Old Boston On the morning of October 29, 1829, the waters of Boston Harbor were of a milk-white hue; on the same night they were of the hue of blood. With the dawn of that disastrous day one of the most terrific storms that ever swept the coast of New England had come rolling down from the north to hold high carnival in Massachusetts Bay. From Charles River Bridge, on the north of the city, to the south end as far as India Wharf, the white waves surged and thundered all day, in unison with the diapason of infernal Winds, whose shrieks com mingled with those of the sea-gull passing out of the track of the tempest. Anon. Boston common! What memories does this beloved name awaken in my heart! - what associations recall from the recesses of the long-buried past! Now, while these memories and associations are fresh in my mind, wilt come with me, dear reader, to this sweet spot? wilt recline 'neath the sheltering branches of these noble trees? wilt place thy hand cordially in mine, and lend me thy sympathy and thy heart? and, while the birds are warbling their love-songs over thy head, and the rainbow-tinted fountain dashes its delicate and cooling spray about thy feet, - while the fleecy clouds rest lightly in the southern heavens, and the distant hum of the busy city, together with the far off murmuring of waters, lull thy senses to forgetfulness of care, - wilt listen to my simple tale? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barclays of Boston Start not, gentle reader, at this announcement; such things occur even in the over-educated and overstrained city of the Puritan fathers. Young love! What a sad pity that the only obstacle aris ing, in after years, when the tender passion exists and overwhelms its deluded victims so early in life, is the manifest difficulty of remembering and ascertaining the idolized object of the first dream, ' and that the scent of the roses, instead of embalming the fair vision, should be lost in oblivion.
