Book Report on Improving Literacy and Numeracy Achievement in Schools

Download or read book Report on Improving Literacy and Numeracy Achievement in Schools written by Northern Ireland. Assembly. Public Accounts Committee and published by . This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been progress improving levels of literacy and numeracy over recent years, the pace of this has been slow. Moreover, there is a high concentration of poor outcomes in some schools and a big gap in performance that is partially linked to social deprivation. In addition, there can be a wide variation in the results achieved by schools with apparently similar intakes. Overlaying this, girls generally achieve higher standards than boys across the school sector, and among disadvantaged communities, maintained schools generally outperform schools in the controlled sector. The Committee concluded that the operation of a number of key elements consistently underlies the performance of schools that achieve high standards of literacy and numeracy: a belief that each child can learn and build on basic literacy and numeracy skills regardless of background; convincing evidence which indicates that the greatest improvements in literacy and numeracy skills will come from systematic and sustained intervention in children's early years; the engagement of parents to provide educational development in the home and in local communities; strong leadership and management practices, involving whole-school approaches to the teaching of literacy and numeracy; the provision of quality teaching and learning by teachers who have acquired, during their pre-service teacher training, and in-service professional learning, evidence-based teaching practices that are shown to be effective in meeting the developmental needs of each child; effective school governance based on a balance between supporting and challenging the school leadership team

Book Growth in Literacy and Numeracy in the First Three Years of School

Download or read book Growth in Literacy and Numeracy in the First Three Years of School written by Marion Meiers and published by Acer Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the findings from the first three years of the ACER longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study (LLANS). The longitudinal study was established in 1999 in a context in which there was significant national interest in improving achievement in literacy and numeracy for all Australian children, and a particular interest in the development of foundational skills in the early years of school. A nation wide sample of 100 schools was selected in proportion to the population of each state and territory and ten students were randomly selected from each of these schools. This provided a cohort for LLANS of 1000 children who commenced school in 1999. The longitudinal study continued beyond the first three years of school until 2005 when the students in the sample were in year 6.

Book Tracking Adult Literacy and Numeracy Skills

Download or read book Tracking Adult Literacy and Numeracy Skills written by Stephen Reder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-16 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the origins of poor literacy and numeracy skills in adulthood and how to improve them is of major importance when society places a high premium on proficiency in these basic skills. This edited collection brings together the results of recent longitudinal studies that greatly extend our knowledge of what works in raising skill levels, as well as the social and economic returns to improvement. Many fundamental research questions in adult education involve change over time: how adults learn, how program participation influences their acquisition of skills and knowledge, and how their educational development interacts with their social and economic performance. Although a growing number of longitudinal studies in adult basic education have recently been completed, this book is the first systematic compilation of findings and methods. Triangulating findings from different methodological perspectives and research designs, and across countries, this text produces convergence on key conclusions about the role of basic skills in the modern life course and the most effective ways of enhancing them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract. This introduction sets the scene for the remainder of the book by considering first the international context of widespread concern about the improvement of numeracy skills. This is related to reform movements in the UK, the US and other countries aimed at modernising primary (elementary) school mathematics curricula. A detailed account is given of the National Numeracy Strategy in England, a systemic government-imposed response to concern about standards implemented in 1999/2000. This includes a discussion of the alternative meanings of numeracy. An earlier initiative sponsored by a UK charitable trust reacting to concern about primary numeracy was the Leverhulme Numeracy Research Programme. This large-scale longitudinal study and linked set of case-study projects, focusing on reasons for low attainment, took place during 1997-2002. This book, and each other in the same series, is based on results of that research. The timescale fortuitously enabled the research team to also report on some effects of the systemic reform in the National Numeracy Strategy. 1. THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT In many countries, there are recurring periods of national concern about the low standards of calculation skills shown by children in primary (elementary) schools. Recently these concerns have become more urgent and more political with the publication of international comparisons of mathematical achievement, first at secondary and more recently at primary level (e. g. Lapointe, Mead et al. 1992; Mullis et al. , 1997).

Book EBOOK Adult Literacy Numeracy and Language Policy Practice and Research

Download or read book EBOOK Adult Literacy Numeracy and Language Policy Practice and Research written by Lyn Tett and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2006-06-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the social practice of literacy, numeracy and language and its implications for teaching and learning adult basic skills. Leading international experts argue that literacy, numeracy and language are more than just a set of skills or techniques, but are shaped by the social and cultural context within which they are taking place; the meanings they have for users; and the purposes they serve. This shifts the focus from a narrow, functional and externally imposed definition of literacy, numeracy and language learning, to more open and numerous definitions that focus on what people do with their knowledge, understanding and skills in a range of contexts. Adult Literacy, Numeracy and Language shows how the social practice approach to learning and teaching can be used to develop more inclusive views of adult literacy, numeracy and language. Bringing together the views of researchers, policy makers and practitioners, it helps readers to develop an understanding of contemporary policy developments and encourages them to examine their own practice as adult basic education teachers, in order to respond more effectively to the needs of their students. This book is a valuable resource for practitioners, researchers and students on courses in adult and continuing education (particularly basic skills), postgraduate students, and researchers in the field of post-compulsory education.

Book Developing Embedded Literacy Language and Numeracy

Download or read book Developing Embedded Literacy Language and Numeracy written by Jan Eldred and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognising that many adults do not seek tuition in literacy, language and numeracy, this Lifeline helps teachers and managers to consider how these subjects can be taught alongside or within other programmes of study. By identifying where literacy, language or numeracy occur naturally it shows how teaching and learning can become more relevant and purposeful. This practical guide offers different models of delivery that can be adapted to suit both the learners and the programme of study. It draws on examples developed by teachers and outlines the challenges and complexities of this approach as well as the opportunities and advantages.

Book Multiple Perspectives on Difficulties in Learning Literacy and Numeracy

Download or read book Multiple Perspectives on Difficulties in Learning Literacy and Numeracy written by Claire Wyatt-Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many approaches to researching the difficulties in learning that students experience in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. This book seeks to advance understanding of these difficulties and the interventions that have been used to improve outcomes. The book addresses the sometimes complementary and sometimes contradictory results, and generates new approaches to understanding and serving students with difficulties in literacy and numeracy. The book represents a departure from conventional wisdom as most scholars and graduate students draw upon ideas from only one of the three domains focal in the book and usually from one single or dominant theoretical frame. Typically, readers will affiliate with reading education, mathematics education, or learning disabilities and belong to one of the corresponding professional associations such as IRA, NCTM, or CLD. This book’s scope will open a scholarly forum for engaging readers with a familiarity with one of these domains while providing insight into the others on offer in the book.

Book Literacy Numeracy and Educational Achievement in Queensland Schools

Download or read book Literacy Numeracy and Educational Achievement in Queensland Schools written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture reports information gathered by the Australian Study of School Performance. The Study aimed to estimate for Australia and each State and Territory, the number of children not attaining basic literacy and numeracy skills and to specify relationships between various other factors and competence in these skills. Sampling methods for Queensland and students' performance in the tests are detailed. Queensland students performed well relative to those in other states. The author stresses the need for adequate learning time to be allowed for students to achieve a prescribed level of performance.
