Book excerpt: In the course of the hundreds of Rio Chama rafting trips that we've logged during the last 30 years, none of us has ever had a bad trip. Such is the magic of the Rio Chama. No matter the weather, the water level, the season, the crowded Big Eddy boat ramp on a blistering Sunday afternoon, or even the coffee forgotten at home, the Rio Chama remains "The People's River." Its stunning beauty, plus its exceptional camping, user-friendly whitewater, and mostly predictable flows, combine to create one of the Southwest's premiere, multi-day, river running experiences. The spectacular, towering canyon walls of the Wild & Scenic section through the remote Chama River Canyon Wilderness is New Mexico's own "Grand Canyon." The geology of the Rio Chama is so exceptional that this river is ideally suited for a river guide with a geological theme. And so, following the release of the Rio Grande geologic river guide in 2011, we turned our (part-time) attention to the Rio Chama. Although most Rio Chama recreation is focused on the El Vado to Big Eddy stretch, thedecision was easily made to include the entire boatable section, from the highlands in Colorado to the confluence with the Rio Grande, as each section of the river displays its own visual spectacles and assortment of adventures. Plus, the geology is magnificent and diverse along the entire length of the river.

Book Venus II geology Geophysics Atmosphere and Solar Wind Environment

Download or read book Venus II geology Geophysics Atmosphere and Solar Wind Environment written by Stephen Wesley Bougher and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1997-12 with total page 1384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final orbit of Venus by the Magellan spacecraft in October 1994 brought to a close an exciting period of Venus reconnaissance and exploration. The scientific studies resulting from data collected by the Magellan, Galileo, and Pioneer missions are unprecedented in their detail for any planet except Earth. Venus II re-evaluates initial assessments of Venus in light of these and other spacecraft missions and ground-based observations conducted over the past 30 years. More than a hundred contributors summarize our current knowledge of the planet, consider points of disagreement in interpretation, and identify priorities for future research. Topics addressed include geology, surface processes, volcanism, tectonism, impact cratering, geodynamics, upper and lower atmospheres, and solar wind environment. The diversity of the coverage reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Venus science and the breadth of knowledge that has contributed to it. A CD-ROM developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory accompanies the book and incorporates text, graphics, video, software, and various digital products from selected contributors to the text. A multimedia interface allows users to navigate the text and the extensive databases included on the disk. Venus II is the most authoritative single volume available on the second planet. Its contents will not only help shape the goals of future Venus missions but will also enhance our understanding of current Mars explorations.

Book Geology of the Great Plains and Mountain West

Download or read book Geology of the Great Plains and Mountain West written by Cynthia Light Brown and published by Nomad Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Answering intriguing questions such as Why does the largest river system in North America meander across the middle of the continent? and How does such a system relate to the rugged Rocky Mountains?, this fun-filled book delves into the majestic Great Plains region. The chapters concisely clarify the interrelated subjects of terrain, climate, and the great movements of the earth itself while illustrating the important changes that are still occurring in the area’s rivers, lakes, plains, and unpredictable weather. Brimming with fascinating facts, educational sidebars tell how earthquakes in New Madrid, Missouri caused waves to go upstream in the Mississippi River; why and how tornadoes form; and how invasive species are threatening the Great Lakes and what people are doing about it.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book U S Geological Survey Bulletin

Download or read book U S Geological Survey Bulletin written by Betty M. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel-Hump Wilderness lies in central Idaho. A mineral survey of the 206,500 acre area in Idaho County was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines during 1980 to 1983. The study consisted of new geologic mapping, geochemical sampling of the wilderness and vicinity, geophysical surveying, and investigation of claim blocks in or near the wilderness. Fractures in the roof zone of plutons of the Idaho batholith host gold and silver deposits in mining districts that are contiguous with and included in the Gospel- Hump Wilderness. Subeconomic gold and silver resources are indicated and inferred at the War Eagle and Blue Jay mines (southeastern part of the area). Parts of the eastern half of the wilderness area, which are included in mining districts and which are along the trends of known mineralized fractures, have a high potential for gold and silver resources and moderate potential for copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum resources in quartz fissure-veins. Other parts of the wilderness that have the same geologic setting have a moderate potential for gold and silver resources in undiscovered quartz veins that lie along the trend of or are parallel to known veins. The western third of the wilderness has a moderate potential for tungsten, silver, lead, copper, nickel, and possibly gold resources in skarn or metasomatic replacement deposits along thrust faults adjacent to carbonate units.

With eloquence, passion, and insight, she describes and reflects on the relationship between the land, history, and people and makes this underappreciated region less barren for those who would share her journeys.
