Book Liszt s late works for piano

Download or read book Liszt s late works for piano written by Michael Regan and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-12-06 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, grade: none, , language: English, abstract: Franz Liszt, remains an enigmatic figure. Probably no other major composer of the 19th century, with the possible exception of Berlioz, has aroused such contradictory opinions. That he was a major figure there can be no doubt- the B minor sonata and the Faust symphony testify to that. But that he was a genius, as Alfred Brendel, and, no doubt, others suggest, is more debatable. Geniuses produce works which (1), withstand the test of time, often of very long periods of time, and (2), are perceived as flawless masterpieces (or as near to it as is humanly possible). Now, although Liszt passes on the first point- his work is still very much with us both in live and recorded form- I do not think it can be said that any of Liszt’s works, even the very best, are flawless. Even the great B minor Sonata has at least two dud bars (708-9), and does not that great tune marked grandioso, and first heard in bar 105, come just a little too many times for the effect that Liszt was aiming at to be fully realised? On the other hand he cannot be dismissed lightly. His enormous output contains many works, which may not be masterpieces but can still have an uncanny power over unprejudiced audiences. I remember Claudio Arrau’s magisterial readings of some of the Transcendental Studies which almost convinced one that these were indeed masterpieces, and Kempff’s poetic and almost impressionistic touch with some of the pieces from Anees de Pelerinage. But whatever we may think about his final place in the pantheon of composers, there can hardly be any dispute over the position of the late works, those written after 1860 in which Liszt, virtually on his own, foreshadowed many of the new directions explored by composers in the 20th century. In mostly short pieces, and in the main for his own instrument, we find Liszt anticipating impressionism, atonality, unorthodox chords and progressions, and scales outside of the customary major and minor, all of which did not become common until well after 1910.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Liszt

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Liszt written by Kenneth Hamilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-22 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion provides an up-to-date view of the music of Franz Liszt, its contemporary context and performance practice, written by some of the leading specialists in the field of nineteenth-century music studies. Although a core of Liszt's piano music has always maintained a firm hold on the repertoire, his output was so vast, influential and multi-faceted that scholarship too has taken some time to assimilate his achievement. This book offers students and music lovers some of the latest views in an accessible form. Katharine Ellis, Alexander Rehding and James Deaville present the biographical and intellectual aspects of Liszt's legacy, Kenneth Hamilton, James Baker and Anna Celenza give a detailed account of Liszt's piano music - including approaches to performance - Monika Hennemann discusses Liszt's Lieder, and Reeves Shulstad and Dolores Pesce survey his orchestral and choral music.

Book excerpt: Franz Liszt was one of the most awe-inspiring figures in all of music history. As a composer, he was experimental and inventive, pushing the boundaries of form and harmony. As a pianist, he possessed breathtaking virtuosity: his masterful technique was almost acrobatic. Liszt left behind an enormous body of piano music - by turns poetic, glittering, prophetic, profound, and haunting - that failed to command the acclaim it deserved in his lifetime. Today, however, Franz Liszt is widely known as both a brilliant composer and one of the greatest pianists ever.

Book The Late Piano Works of Franz Liszt and Their Anticipation of Musical Ideas of the Twentieth Century

Download or read book The Late Piano Works of Franz Liszt and Their Anticipation of Musical Ideas of the Twentieth Century written by Philipp Jens Richardsen and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2007 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation will provide an analysis of selected late piano works by Franz Liszt, followed by an attempt to locate some of their formal and semantic elements in music written after Liszt's death. I introduce each of the selected compositions with a brief summary of its historical background within the composer's life. I then initiate the analytical approach with a description of musical overall form and thematic range, if applicable, and support the discussion with a chart outlining divisions into sections, sub-sections, and units. After a general outlook on rhythmic design and specific thematic elements of the work, each unit or group of units is discussed individually. Subsequently, a conclusion summarizes significant features of any kind found during the analysis. In a separate chapter, divided into three major sections, I give various examples of music written after Liszt's death, each of which bears elements that correspond to some of the factors extracted in the preceding analytical chapter. The initial section elaborates on general aspects of Liszt reception during the past 150 years. The second section investigates the musical relationship between Liszt and Debussy, whereas the third attempts to portray Liszt as an early pioneer of pitch-class set theory. A brief conclusion delivers some final thoughts on the topic. The intent of this chapter is to filter out comparable tonal or harmonic progressions as well as similarities regarding musical syntax, thematic or rhythmic content, and atmospheric effects.

Book Liszt s Final Decade

Download or read book Liszt s Final Decade written by Dolores Pesce and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2014 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liszt's Final Decade reveals in the composer's own words to his confidantes Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein and Olga von Meyendorff how he resolved his conflicted self-image as a celebrated performer but underappreciated composer. Toward the end of his life Franz Liszt maintained extensive correspondence with two women who were at the time his closest confidantes, Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein and Olga von Meyendorff. Liszt wrote to them regularly, expressing his intimate feelings about personal and career events and his conflicted self-image as a celebrated performer but underappreciated composer. Absent a diary, the letters offer the most direct avenue into Liszt's psyche in hisfinal years. Liszt's Final Decade explores through these letters the mind and music of one of the nineteenth century's most popular musicians, providing insight into Liszt's melancholia in his last years and his struggle to gain recognition for his music yet avoid criticism. The exchange indicates that Liszt ultimately resolved his inner conflict through a personally constructed Christian moral philosophy that embraced positive resignation to suffering, compassionate love, and trust in a just reward to come. The book also examines how Liszt's late sacred compositions affirm the yielding of suffering to joy and hope. Significantly, Liszt viewed these works, commonly overlooked today, as a major part of his compositional legacy. This volume thus challenges the idea of a single "late" Lisztian style and the notion that despair overwhelmed the composer in his final years. We are pleased to announce that Liszt's Final Decade is the winner of the 2017 Alan Walker Book Award, given by the American Liszt Society. Dolores Pesce is the Avis Blewett Professor of Music in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

Book The Cambridge Companion to the Lied

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Lied written by James Parsons and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning several generations before Schubert, the Lied first appears as domestic entertainment. In the century that follows it becomes one of the primary modes of music-making. By the time German song comes to its presumed conclusion with Richard Strauss's 1948 Vier letzte Lieder, this rich repertoire has moved beyond the home and keyboard accompaniment to the symphony hall. This is a 2004 introductory chronicle of this fascinating genre. In essays by eminent scholars, this Companion places the Lied in its full context - at once musical, literary, and cultural - with chapters devoted to focal composers as well as important issues, such as the way in which the Lied influenced other musical genres, its use as a musical commodity, and issues of performance. The volume is framed by a detailed chronology of German music and poetry from the late 1730s to the present and also contains a comprehensive bibliography.

Book Twenty Original Piano Compositions by Franz Liszt

Download or read book Twenty Original Piano Compositions by Franz Liszt written by Franz Liszt and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Size: 8 1/2" x 11" * * * * * * * From the introductory. THERE is magic sound in the very name of Liszt, and the atmosphere which once surrounded the prodigy lingers about his name after the man has long since left the earth. The vast majority of musicians and music lovers of the present day have no personal recollection of Liszt's appearance and much less of his playing, and yet his name alone is sufficient to give many a sensation of intensified expectancy. This is all the more remarkable, because the world has been anything but unanimous in proclaiming Liszt a great composer; on the contrary, far too much indifference and reluctance have been shown towards his compositions. Is it possible then, that through some transcendental power the fascination of his marvellous interpretations, which were supposed to die with the hour, has survived several generations of mankind and is still mysteriously transmitted from one to another? So much having been wonderful about the living Liszt, one is tempted to believe that the wonders were not exhausted with his life, but still follow his name wherever it is mentioned. Admiration, however, must be based on fact, if it is to last, and it seems that the time has come to let the light of Liszt's works dissipate the haze of a more or less mysterious admiration surrounding his name. We -- that is, the musical world at large -- know too little of Liszt's compositions and consequently may frequently have passed a superficial and therefore unjust judgment upon his creative powers. When Liszt at the height of his career as a virtuoso suddenly decided to withdraw from the concert field and accepted the position as court conductor "for special services (in ausserordentlichen Diensten)" to the Grand Duke of Saxe Weimar, even his friends and admirers felt at first inclined to take this surprising step for the momentary whim of a spoiled artist. And when, some years after, he again surprised the world by turning out Symphonic Poems, the fraternity of composers was certainly disposed to sneer at the intruder. This animosity against the composer Liszt has not yet subsided, and many a base sentence has been passed on his works by men who had enjoyed the moral as well as the material support of the great musical benefactor of Weimar.
