Book British Municipal Bus Operators

Download or read book British Municipal Bus Operators written by Jim Blake and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned transport photographer and author of British Railways in Transition looks at municipal operators in England and Wales in the 1960s. Going back to the very first horse-bus or tram operations in Victorian times, many towns and cities throughout Britain had such operators, owned and run by the town or city councils. Most of them had tramway systems, many of which were replaced by trolleybuses from the 1920s onwards. In turn, after the Second World War, trolleybuses too were on the way out, with motorbuses unfortunately replacing both forms of electric traction. By the 1960s, only a handful were still operating trams, then by the end of the decade only few trolleybus systems remained. During this period, some of these operators had very large fleets, for example those serving the conurbations of Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, whilst others had very small fleets, such as West Bridgford Urban District Council in Nottinghamshire. Municipal operators had a wide variety of vehicle types, encompassing virtually all chassis and body makes then in service, and were also well known for their distinctive, traditional liveries. In addition to the buses, there were also still trams and trolleybuses, which to many enthusiasts made them that much more interesting. “Jim Blake has a number of bus books to his name, and is well regarded in bus circles. The photos are good and clear with information about each bus and information on various bus types as well. A potentially useful resource for the modeler.” —Diesel and Electric Modellers United “Magnificent portrait of the time through an interesting collection of images.” —Miniaturas JM

Book Trolley Buses Around the World

Download or read book Trolley Buses Around the World written by William A. Luke and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2006-11-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century trolley buses have been providing transportation in towns and cities throughout the world. The trolley bus offered several advantages over other vehicles, primarily quiet operation, quick acceleration from a standing start, hill-climbing ability and a long life span. During the 1950s and 1960s, many trolley bus systems were abandoned. The oil crisis of the 1970s marked a turning point, and the number of trolley bus systems in the world has risen steadily since. Take a trip around the world to see the various styles and systems of trolley buses. This Photo Gallery includes many past and present trolley bus systems from North & South America, Europe, Russia, Asia, and Africa. You'll learn the differences in equipment built over time, who the main manufacturers of Trolley Buses were in these countries and much more.

Book British Trolleybus Systems

Download or read book British Trolleybus Systems written by Peter Waller and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2023-05-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there had been experiments with the use of a new form of transport - the ‘trackless tram’ (better known as the trolleybus) - during the first decade of the 20th century, it was in June 1911 that Bradford and Leeds became the country’s pioneering operators of trolleybuses. There had been earlier experimental users – in places like Hove and London – and as the tide turned against the tram in many towns and cities, the trolleybus became a popular alternative with the trolleybus coming to dominate the provision of local public transport in places like Derby and Ipswich. This volume – one of four that examines the history of all trolleybus operators in the British Isles – focuses on the systems that operated in Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia.

Book British Trolleybus Systems Yorkshire

Download or read book British Trolleybus Systems Yorkshire written by Peter Waller and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there had been experiments with the use of a new form of transport - the 'trackless tram' (better known as the trolleybus) - during the first decade of the 20th century, it was in June 1911 that Bradford and Leeds became the country's pioneering operators of trolleybuses. Whilst, in Leeds, the trolleybus was destined to have a fairly peripheral role (and finally disappeared in 1928), in Bradford, perhaps as a consequence of the hills surrounding the city centre which represented ideal territory for the trolleybus, the 'trackless' was destined to have a long and illustrious career stretching for more than 60 years until - on 26 March 1972 - the final first-generation trolleybus system finally succumbed to the all-conquering motorbus. This is the first of two volumes to cover the history of all of the trolleybus operators of the British Isles and focuses on those systems in the North of England and Scotland as well as the only network in Northern Ireland - Belfast. The book includes comprehensive fleet and route histories allied to some 250 illustrations, both color and mono, including a map of each network featured.

Download or read book Tires and Wires written by Tom Schwartzkopf and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1880s, widespread availability of electricity was a modern wonder. It allowed fast electric transit vehicles to replace the traditional horse--drawn conveyances. Initially these streetcars (or trams) travelled on steel rails, but soon trolley coaches, with their rubber--tired buses began to dominate, because they proved more maneuverable streets increasingly crowded with automobile traffic. Every major city in Canada added fleets of the new electric coaches, which, thanks to their quiet powerful motors could climb hills and accelerate faster than their petrol--fuelled counterparts. St. Johns, Saint John, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Cornwall, Toronto, Hamilton,, Kitchener, Windsor, Port Arthur--Fort William, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Nelson, Vancouver, and Victoria are the focus for this history, which features more than 200 photographs and drawings, route maps, a history of the nine Canadian trolley coach manufacturers, and complete system rosters.

Book The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies

Download or read book The Urban Transport Crisis in Emerging Economies written by Dorina Pojani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume discuses urban transport issues, policies, and initiatives in twelve of the world’s major emerging economies – Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, and Vietnam - countries with large populations that have recently experienced large changes in urban structure, motorization and all the associated social, economic, and environmental impacts in positive and negative senses. Contributions on each of these twelve countries focus on one or more major cities per country. This book aims to fill a gap in the transport literature that is crucial to understanding the needs of a large portion of the world’s urban population, especially in view of the southward shift in economic power. Readers will develop a better understanding of urban transport problems and policies in nations where development levels are below those of richer countries (mainly in the northern hemisphere) but where the rate of economic growth is often increasing at a faster rate than the wealthiest nations.

Book A Z of British Trolleybuses

Download or read book A Z of British Trolleybuses written by Stephen Lockwood and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last century, the trolleybus developed into a successful provider of public transport in many towns and cities around Britain. It is often described as being part tram and part motorbus. The trolleybus was a fast vehicle whose acceleration from rest was far superior to that of any motorbus. Added to this it was quiet and fume-free, and consumed home-produced electricity generated using coal. During the last twenty years, there have been many books about trolleybuses published, but hardly any of these has tackled the subject from the vehicle manufacturers' angle, instead concentrating on individual trolleybus systems. This volume is, therefore, a summary of the British trolleybus, describing each manufacturer and its products, and then showing what happened to these vehicles throughout their life. It contains an alphabetical listing of all the manufacturers, detailing company history and trolleybus types produced including production totals. A second alphabetical company-by-company listing gives full details of every trolleybus built for British use, including data such as chassis number and any subsequent significant changes. As far as possible it is all presented in a non-technical way. This complete guide to the types of British trolleybuses produced, how many and their operational history is superbly illustrated with over 300 photographs, many in colour.
