Book The Birds of Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds of Connecticut Classic Reprint written by John Hallsage and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Connecticut Facing Long Island Sound for practically all of its hundred miles of southern border, Connecticut shows a succession of low, rocky promontories and sandy beaches divided by shallow bays and salt marshes. The latter stretch for varying distances northward, but soon give place to rather broad stream valleys, separated by gently rising hills. These hills, usually low and rounded at the coast, when not dikes or sheets of trap, as near New Haven, become rapidly more mountainous in the northwestern part of the state, culminating in Bear Mountain in the extreme corner, 2,354 feet in altitude and sixty miles from the Sound. The soil of these hills is usually poor and shallow, while that of many of the valleys is deep and rich, so that, while the lowlands are well cultivated and thickly settled, the uplands are generally left to brush land or forest. From this configuration it will be evident that most of the streams are short and flow in a southerly direction. Three main river courses cross the state: - the Thames on the east, which for its lower quarter is practically an arm of the sea, and above that hardly more than a small stream; the Connecticut, which passes through the center, in a broad and fertile valley in its upper course, and in a narrow valley hemmed in by highlands below Portland; and the Housatonic in the western part, with a narrow and much more mountainous valley. Apparently the Connecticut and upper Housatonic valleys and the southern coast line are highways for the migration of our birds in spring, and the coast line certainly is in fall, but our information on this point is at present very incomplete. The woodland consists chiefly of deciduous trees, though hemlocks and cedars are common, and groves of white pine and spruce still exist in the northwestern portion. Shut off from the ocean by Long Island, strictly pelagic birds are seldom found in Connecticut, but for many other species it is particularly fitted as regards climate and topography. Download or read book A List of the Birds of New Hampshire Classic Reprint written by Glover Morrill Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of New Hampshire In the following pages an attempt has been made to bring to gether a list of the species of birds known to have occurred with in the State of New Hampshire during historic times, together with a general account of their distribution, faunal position, times of migration, and, in case of the rarer species, a detailed list of the known instance of occurrence. The present list can be at best only preliminary, and there remains much yet to be done in 'the way of obtaining more complete information as to the de tails of distribution and migration, and particularly so in the case of the water birds. In addition to much that has been already recorded in many books and periodicals, a considerable body of unpublished facts relative to the birds of the State is here included, based not only on the writer's personal observations, but also on those of a num ber of ornithologists who have contributed most generously of their notes, and to whom due acknowledgment is made. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Birds of Connecticut In the year 1861, Dr. William Wood, of East Windsor Hill, Conn., published, in the Hartford Times, a series of twenty-one admirable and most interesting articles on our Birds of Prey, and it is much to be regretted that he did not, in like manner, take up the remaining groups. A few brief notices of the occurrence of some of the rarer species within our limits have, from time to time, appeared in the American Naturalist and Bulletin of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, but nothing like a systematic list of the birds of the State has been attempted. Book Birds of the New York City Region Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of the New York City Region Classic Reprint written by Ludlow Griscom and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the New York City Region Seventeen years have passed since the appearance of Dr. Chapman's pamphlet on "The Birds of the Vicinity of New York City." This publication briefly summarized the information about our local birds available at that time, and was a veritable mine of inspiration and assistance to the modern generation of field ornithologists and amateur bird students, who were then just beginning work. It is difficult to conceive the change that has taken place in these seventeen years. For one person interested in birds then there are now hundreds, who cover almost every section of the area at every season of the year. When Dr. Chapman wrote, not only were many parts of his territory without a resident student, but many sections had never even been visited by anyone interested in birds, or had remained unvisited for many years. Twenty-five years ago an active field man went out collecting a few dozen times a year, or made two or three trips lasting a week or so apiece. Nowadays an active student will often be afield a hundred times in one year. The result is an enormous mass of data and notes of all kinds, which, when digested and arranged, greatly extend the knowledge of our birds, and modify many old conceptions of their status and distribution. The Linnaean Society of New York, throughout this period, has been the main center and nucleus for this growth of ornithological interest. At its meeting of October 14, 1919, Dr. Chapman moved that a committee be appointed to prepare as complete and detailed a Local Avifauna as present knowledge permitted. This committee, appointed somewhat later, consisted of Mr. J. T. Nichols as chairman, Dr. E. R. P. Janvrin, and the writer. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of Long Island, New York Long Island, New York, is about 120 miles long by from 8 to 18 miles broad, with a nearly straight coast-line on the south shore, along the ocean front, but broken on the north by the more or less abrupt indentures of Long Island Sound. Its general position is about parallel with the coast-line of the mainland, trending slightly northward from west to east. The north shore in general is abrupt and hilly, owing to a low range of hills termed the backbone of the island, which, in places along the Sound, form high, bold bluffs often 100 feet and more in height. The south shore fronts the Atlantic Ocean, forming an outlying beach separated, in great part, from the land by shallow bays and salt marshes. Except at its eastern extremity this beach is low and sandy, shifting somewhat year by year under the influence of the winds as well as by the action of the tides and waves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds and Seasons: New England Mr. Burroughs is confessedly the most graphic and entertaining of our authors on Ornithology. I regret that I had not seen his book, "Wake Robin," before this volume was in type, as the perusal of it would have improved my own pages. I would remind the reader that some parts of my book have previously appeared in print. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
