Book Stories of the Great West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of the Great West Classic Reprint written by Theodore Roosevelt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Great West As a youth Theodore Roosevelt was an enthusiastic student of Western history and pioneer types. Later, as ranchman and hunter, he grew to know intimately and to love deeply the rough, free life of the Western plains. Mr. Roosevelt's interest in history probably was inherited, but his fondness for outdoor life grew out of his grateful love for his foster mother - the green earth - who took the delicate youth in her rough, but kindly, embrace and gave him a sound body and a clear vision. It was during the quiet evenings, and the otherwise idle hours, spent at Elkhorn," his Dakota ranch, that Theodore Roosevelt penned most of the fascinating pictures of frontier and ranch life that make up this present volume. "The Backwoodsmen of the Alleghanies" and "Lewis and Clark and the Exploration of the Far West" are from The Winning of the West," permission to republish here having kindly been granted by G. P. Putnam's Sons. The other stories are from Hero Tales" and Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail." Some of these stories have been condensed from the original version for reasons of space. Book The Winning of the West Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Winning of the West Classic Reprint written by Charles Reynolds Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Winning of the West THE Twelve Tribes of Israel took their names for the most part from the twelve sons of Jacob. But Ephraim was not a son; he was a grandson. He was the younger, the more vigorous and promising son of Joseph. He was the one on whom Jacob, the aged grandfather, laid his right hand when he was asked to bless the two boys. He gave his left hand to Mannasseh, the elder, who might naturally have been the privileged one. And in the estimate of the author of Genesis this action was prophetic. The Tribe of Ephraim became perhaps the most powerful tribe in early Israel. It was brave, resolute, enterprising. It pushed out to the north and west, thus extending the borders of the land of promise. On the west side shall be the standard of the Tribe of Ephraim! Westward the spirit of progress and of leadership takes its even way. From Persia to Greece, where Alexander of Macedon wept because there were no more worlds to conquer! Book Tales of the West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tales of the West Classic Reprint written by Bret Harte and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the West Just where the Sierra Nevada begins to subside in gentler undulations, and the rivers grow less rapid and yellow, on the side of a great red mountain, stands "Smith's Pocket." Seen from the red road at sunset, in the red light and the red dust, its white houses look like the outcroppings of quartz on the mountain-side. The red stage, topped with red-shirted passengers, is lost to view half-a-dozen times in the tortuous descent, turning up unexpectedly in out-of-the-way places, and vanishing altogether within a hundred yards of the town. It is probably owing to this sudden twist in the road that the advent of a stranger at Smith's Pocket is usually attended with a peculiar circumstance. Dismounting from the vehicle at the stage-office, the too-confident traveller is apt to walk straight out of town under the impression that it lies in quite another direction. Download or read book ROMANCE OF WESTERN HIST OR SKE written by James Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Western History, or Sketches of History, Life, and Manners, in the West In the following volumes, therefore, nothing further is attempted than a collection of facts, some of which are the result Of the writer's own observation, and all of which are intended rather as examples and illustrations of topics connected with the Western States, than as a regular narrative of its history. They are not presented in any connected series, nor with any embellishment of style, but are placed before the reader under the most unambitious form consistent with convenience of arrange ment and propriety of expression. This is not said to disarm criticism - an author has no right to interpose himself between the critic and his duty, either to secure his clemency or resent his decision - we intend simply to explain to the reader the unpretending character of the work, in order that its title may not awaken expec tions which it is not calculated to satisfy. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Paul Revere of the West Emerson has this very striking remark, gentle men, that the best history, that true history is biography; that men are but the pages of history, and in that sense, I dearly love the study of our American history. In dwelling so much upon these historical and biographical subjects, I am sometimes afraid that the same fate may overtake me which Mr. Lincoln said overtook a certain lawyer friend Of his in Illinois. They had been very stubbornly contesting a certain case in the law courts Of the 8th District, and when the time came for submitting the arguments to the jury, Mr. Lincoln arose and said, Gentlemen of the Jury, for reasons which are deplorable, as they are surprising, every time my friend on the opposite side of this case Opens his mouth to talk, all his mental operations cease at once. And Gentlemen, said he, the only thing with which my friend's lamentable condition can be compared, is a little steamboat that used to ply in the early 305 on the Sangamon River, when I was performing my part as a common keel flatboat man on that river. This little boat used to wheeze and snort up and down the river. It had a five-foot boiler, and a seven foot whistle, and every time it whistled, it stopped. (laughter.) Now, there will be much whistling and blowing here tonight, but we will endeavor to keep moving. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Sketches of History Life and Manners in the West Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by James Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of History, Life, and Manners, in the West, Vol. 1 Previous to the year 1793, the whole of our western frontier was continually harassed by the inroads of the Indians. Kentucky, then recently erected into a state, was a wide battle field, in which our gallant countrymen maintained themselves by a series of hardy exploits and patient sufferings. Gradually, however, the savages had been driven back or exterminated, until the river Ohio formed the grand line between them and the whites, and municipal regulations began to be introduced and enforced. Still there were large tracts of wilderness, lying between the settled districts, and within our acknowledged boundaries, where the marauding parties of the enemy lurked, and from which they emerged to attack the unwary traveller, or to assail the inhabitants who ventured to push their improvements into the forest, at a distance from the protection of the organized settlements.
