Book excerpt: In Horrors of War, Tudjman combines his first-hand war-torn Yugoslavian experience with a vast knowledge of history, philosophy and literature to prove that violence and retribution are not new to this world, and unfortunately show no sign of abatement. As part of his review of violence in history, and it's political uses, Tudjman examines the Yugoslav Communist creation of a croation 'black legend', attempting to fix the blame for the world war II crimes of Croatia's Ustasha puppet government on the entire Croation people. In particular, he assesses the nature and scope of the crimes committed by the Ustasha government, particularly at the Jasenovac death camp. He concludes that, although Jasenovac was a cruel and terrible place where tens of thousands were murdered, it does not and cannot justify the delegitimization of the Croatian nation. He chronicles the systematic use by the Yugoslav regime of Jasenovac and the ustasha terror as a tool in it's attempt to eliminate Croatian aspirations towards independence. He brings up the fact that the anti-fascist movement in Croatia was one of the strongest anti-fascist movements not only in Yugoslavia but also in Europe. Franjo Tudjman is the president of the Republic of Croatia and a signer of the Dayton Accords.

During the time of the second Yugoslavia, the camp was made into a myth and one of the main levers for disciplining the society of the time. The Communist Party imposed the number of 700,000 victims and an exaggerated view of the alleged crimes and methods of killing inmates. The aim was to present itself as sole guarantor of security, because in the case of its "reigning-in", the fratricidal war would happen again, with Jasenovac as its main symbol. Before 1990, an attempt to point out the absurdity of the 700,000 alleged victims of Jasenovac entailed going to prison or compulsory psychiatric treatment. The documents referenced in this book indicate the need to continue with research of the Jasenovac camp and that in a democratic atmosphere, as far as possible, its realistic historical picture may be reached.

Serbs, Muslims, and Croats continue to dominate the ex-Yugoslavian scene. It has been their arena of battle for centuries, while the flourishing Jewish minority culture in that area has all but come to a historical standstill and has almost completely vanished. Yet the struggle over the historical record continues.

As opposed to the revival of national histories that seemed to be the prevailing historiographical approach of the 1990s, the last decade has seen a particular set of narratives equating Nazism and Communism. This provides opportunities to exonerate wartime collaboration, casting the nation as victim even when its government was allied with Germany. While the Jewish Holocaust is acknowledged, its meaning and significance are obfuscated. In their comparative analysis the authors are also interested in new practices of ‘Europeanness’. Therefore their presentations of Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Bosnian, Croatian and Slovenian post-communist memory politics move beyond the common national myths in order to provide a new insight into transnational interactions and exchanges in Europe in general. The juxtaposition of these politics, the processes in other parts of Europe, the modes of remembering shaped by displacement and the transnational enable a close encounter with the divergences and assess the potential of the formation of common, European memory practices.
