Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries did middle- and upper-class southern women-black and white-advance from the private worlds of home and family into public life, eventually transforming the cultural and political landscape of their community? Using Galveston as a case study, Elizabeth Hayes Turner asks who where the women who became activists and eventually led to progressive reforms and the women sufferage movement. Turner discovers that a majority of them came from particular congregations, but class status had as much to do with reofrm as did religious motivation. The Hurricane of 1900, disfranchisement of black voters, and the creation of city commission government gave white women the leverage they needed to fight for a women's agenda for the city. Meanwhile, African American women, who were excluded from open civic association with whites, created their own organizations, implemented their own goals, and turned their energies to resisting and alleviating the numbing effects of racism. Separately white and black women created their own activist communities. Together, however, they changed the face of this New South city. Based on an exhaustive database of membership in community organizations compiled by the author from local archives, Women, Culture, and Community will appeal to students of race relations in the post-Reconstruction South, women's history, and religious history.

Book The Prince of Jockeys

Download or read book The Prince of Jockeys written by Pellom McDaniels III and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaac Burns Murphy (1861--1896) was one of the most dynamic jockeys of his era. Still considered one of the finest riders of all time, Murphy was the first jockey to win the Kentucky Derby three times, and his 44 percent win record remains unmatched. Despite his success, Murphy was pushed out of Thoroughbred racing when African American jockeys were forced off the track, and he died in obscurity. In The Prince of Jockeys: The Life of Isaac Burns Murphy, author Pellom McDaniels III offers the first definitive biography of this celebrated athlete, whose life spanned the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the adoption of Jim Crow legislation. Despite the obstacles he faced, Murphy became an important figure -- not just in sports, but in the social, political, and cultural consciousness of African Americans. Drawing from legal documents, census data, and newspapers, this comprehensive profile explores how Murphy epitomized the rise of the black middle class and contributed to the construction of popular notions about African American identity, community, and citizenship during his lifetime.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Book excerpt: The Latonia Racetrack, opened in 1883, was one of the country's finest. Its presence spurred development, and the resulting town eventually took its name from the famous track. Latonia flourished with the help of the railroad, which carried visitors into town and hauled coal from the mining regions of southeastern Kentucky. The racetrack and railroad made Latonia a bustling center of activity and brought characters from all walks of life. Railroaders and stable boys tipped their hats to wealthy celebrities arriving to play the odds at the track. Famous jockeys, church-going housewives, and con men crossed paths at the racetrack and at Ritte's Corner. Named for a saloon, Ritte's Corner was considered the heart of Latonia, and it was a place where townspeople gathered to socialize, swap stories, and get the latest news. In 1909, Latonia was annexed by Covington, but it continues to be a neighborhood with its own identity and a place families call home, generation after generation.
