Book Liquid Moment on a Filled Coning Cylinder During Spin Up Ad Hoc Model

Download or read book Liquid Moment on a Filled Coning Cylinder During Spin Up Ad Hoc Model written by N. Gerber and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A liquid-filled right circular cylinder, coning at constant frequency and small amplitude, impulsively begins spinning with a fixed angular velocity. The ensuing history of the moment, i.e., pressure plus viscous shear, exerted by the liquid on the container is investigated here by computation of the quasi-steady state response of the fluid to the motion of the shell. The partial differential equations of flow are linearized, and a modal analysis (separated variable solution) is applied. The difficulty with endwall boundary conditions which arises from stipulating a modal analysis is avoided by specifying a heuristic boundary condition and then satisfying it aproximately. The current procedure for approximating the boundary condition is an improvement over the one employed in previous work (ARBRL-TR-02563) to obtain the pressure moment. Calculations indicate that peaks of overturning moment occur at or near those times when the coning frequency is equal to one of the frequencies of inertial oscillations of the liquid. This phenomenon of resonance extends the results of Stewartson obtained for inviscid perturbations in solid body rotation. Included here also are a discussion of the accuracy of a part of the method and comparisons with output of the inviscid perturbation method and the above-mentioned previous method.

Book Contribution of Pressure to The Moment During Spin Up on a Nutating Liquid Filled Cylinder Ad Hoc Model

Download or read book Contribution of Pressure to The Moment During Spin Up on a Nutating Liquid Filled Cylinder Ad Hoc Model written by N. Gerber and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is made of the flow of a liquid in a cylindrical container that nutiates at constant frequency and small amplitude and impulsively begins spinning with a fixed angular velocity. In particular, the history of pressure overturning moment during spin-up is investigated. The partial differential equations of the problem are linearized, and a modal analysis (separated variable solution) is applied. One consequence of stipulating a modal analysis is a difficulty with endwall boundary conditions; this difficulty is avoided here by specifying a heuristic boundary condition and then satisfying it approximately. Calculations indicate that peaks of overturning or restoring moment occur at or near those times when the nutational frequency is equal to one of the frequencies of inertial oscillations of the liquid. This phenomenon of resonance extends the result of Stewartson obtained for inviscid perturbations in solid body rotation.

Book Numerical Model For Fluid Spin Up in A Partially Filled Cylinder

Download or read book Numerical Model For Fluid Spin Up in A Partially Filled Cylinder written by Gregory F. Homicz and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical investigation is presented for the axisymmetric spin-up of fluid in a partially-filled cylindrical cavity. It is an extension of the earlier analyses of Wedemeyer, and of Goller and Ranov, to those cases where the liquid free surface intersects one or both endwalls. The simplifying assumptions of a columnar flow and the quasi-steady treatment of the Ekman layer pumping of the secondary flow are retained. Earlier estimates of the Ekman layer pumping are modified heuristically for situations where the layer(s) no longer covers the entire wall. Also, due to the very steep free surface contour in the latter stages of spin-up, it was found advantageous to develop the free surface equations in an axial, rather than radical, coordinate frame.

Book Fluid Motion in a Spinning Coning Cylinder Via Spatial Eigenfunction Expansion

Download or read book Fluid Motion in a Spinning Coning Cylinder Via Spatial Eigenfunction Expansion written by Philip Hall and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first attempts to explain the motion of a liquid-filled projectile were confined to the limit Reynolds Number = Re approaches infinity and linear theory. Recently, the need became apparent for the limit Re approaches 0 for which the spatial eigenvalue method was developed; it is not restricted in Re, however. The eigenvalue problem is defined by ordinary differential equations in the radial direction. The eigenvalues are determined by an iterative process for which sufficiently accurate initial estimates are required. The flow variables are expanded in a eigenfunction series with coefficients determined by satisfying the boundary conditions; a least squares method and collocation method are used for this purpose. The pressure and shear stress so determined give the pressure coefficient and overturning moment. The accuracy of the calculation is discussed. Results are given over a range of Re, aspect ratio, and nutational frequency. The CPU time required on the VAX 8600 varies from 10 seconds at Re = 10 to 30 minutes at Re = 1,000. Results are compared with experimental measurements. Comparisons are also made with results from the large scale finite difference program of Strikwerda. Keywords: Liquid filled projectile; Liquid moment; Rotating fluid; Spatial eigenvalues; Spectral method; Spinning nutating cylinder.

Book Radiative Processes in Astrophysics

Download or read book Radiative Processes in Astrophysics written by George B. Rybicki and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiative Processes in Astrophysics: This clear, straightforward, and fundamental introduction is designed to present-from a physicist's point of view-radiation processes and their applications to astrophysical phenomena and space science. It covers such topics as radiative transfer theory, relativistic covariance and kinematics, bremsstrahlung radiation, synchrotron radiation, Compton scattering, some plasma effects, and radiative transitions in atoms. Discussion begins with first principles, physically motivating and deriving all results rather than merely presenting finished formulae. However, a reasonably good physics background (introductory quantum mechanics, intermediate electromagnetic theory, special relativity, and some statistical mechanics) is required. Much of this prerequisite material is provided by brief reviews, making the book a self-contained reference for workers in the field as well as the ideal text for senior or first-year graduate students of astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics courses. Radiative Processes in Astrophysics also contains about 75 problems, with solutions, illustrating applications of the material and methods for calculating results. This important and integral section emphasizes physical intuition by presenting important results that are used throughout the main text; it is here that most of the practical astrophysical applications become apparent.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.
