Book excerpt: An overview of liquid lubricants for use in current and projected high performance turbojet engines is discussed. Chemical and physical properties are reviewed with special emphasis placed on the oxidation and thermal stability requirements imposed upon the lubrication system. A brief history is given of the development of turbine engine lubricants which led to the present day synthetic oils with their inherent modification advantages. The status and state of development of some eleven candidate classes of fluids for use in advanced turbine engines are discussed. Published examples of fundamental studies to obtain a better understanding of the chemistry involved in fluid degradation are reviewed. Alternatives to high temperature fluid development are described. The importance of continuing work on improving current high temperature lubricant candidates and encouraging development of new and improved fluid base stocks are discussed. Book Influence of Lubricants on Turbine Engine Design

Download or read book Influence of Lubricants on Turbine Engine Design written by I. E. Sumey and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ester-base lubricants have best met the requirements of gas turbine engines to date, growth in upper temperature capability seems limited. Plans have been to stress development of MIL-L-27502, a 450F ester-class lubricant. Other chemical types of lubricants exist with much higher temperature capability such as polyphenyl ether and perfluoro-carbon types. But these fluids exhibit poor low temperature pumpability characteristics and have other disadvantages relative to esters. The question arises as to how and to what degree these lubricants or any other advanced lubricants may influence turbine engine design. A study was conducted to determine to what extent hypothetical lubricant properties affect the design of gas turbine engines. The program showed that elevation of bulk oil stability temperature capability has the greatest single impact of any of the several properties studied, and therefore supports the direction taken by MIL-L-27502. A balanced effort on other lubricant properties and supporting materials and design technology must be maintained however, to prepare for the advanced aircraft for the next decade, if lubricants other than esters are to be exploited. Book Advanced High Temperature Air Force Turbine Engine Oil Program

Download or read book Advanced High Temperature Air Force Turbine Engine Oil Program written by CE. Snyder and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military and commercial jet aircraft engines operate hotter than in the past to increase fuel efficiency. Also, advanced structural engine materials permit hotter burning, more efficient engines. These trends are expected to continue. Many current gas turbine engines experience oil system coking and other problems related to the limited thermal and oxidative stability of the conventional, ester-based gas turbine engine oils. This is because most engines operate on gas turbine oils limited to 150°C. The best current oils have a maximum operating temperature of about 200°C. We initiated a program to develop a new class of ester-based lubricants to meet current and future high-temperature requirements. The target temperature range of this new oil is -40°C to 232°C. Target requirements were established and communicated to industry. This paper presents those requirements and initial results on the most promising candidates.

Book Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology

Download or read book Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology written by Robert W. Bruce and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 1173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the best-selling first edition, the growing price and environmental cost of energy have increased the significance of tribology. Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology, Volume II: Theory and Design, Second Edition demonstrates how the principles of tribology can address cost savings, energy conservation, and environmental protection. This second edition provides a thorough treatment of established knowledge and practices, along with detailed references for further study. Written by the foremost experts in the field, the book is divided into four sections. The first reviews the basic principles of tribology, wear mechanisms, and modes of lubrication. The second section covers the full range of lubricants/coolants, including mineral oil, synthetic fluids, and water-based fluids. In the third section, the contributors describe many wear- and friction-reducing materials and treatments, which are currently the fastest growing areas of tribology, with announcements of new coatings, better performance, and new vendors being made every month. The final section presents components, equipment, and designs commonly found in tribological systems. It also examines specific industrial areas and their processes. Sponsored by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, this handbook incorporates up-to-date, peer-reviewed information for tackling tribological problems and improving lubricants and tribological systems. The book shows how the proper use of generally accepted tribological practices can save money, conserve energy, and protect the environment.
