Book Liquid Fuel and Its Combustion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Liquid Fuel and Its Combustion Classic Reprint written by William H. Booth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Liquid Fuel and Its Combustion The Author has endeavoured to connect the two practices, for in the present state of liquid fuel supply it is more than probable that its use will be parallel with the use of coal, especially in dealing with the sudden and high load peaks of electric stations. Liquid fuel cannot be universal unless the supply increases to many times what it is at present, and this points to a good future for the mixed system of firing, Oil and coal being burned together in the same furnace. It has been difficult to make a selection of apparatus to be described, but the Author trusts that he has selected a sufficient number of types practically to cover the ground and show the general trend of practice without unduly multiplying examples. Indeed the tendency seems to him to be in the direction of one general type. As regards special boilers, Oil does not appear to require anything more than what is required by coal, though coal is not treated to the necessary appliances, and oil is so treated, and gains success where coal is allowed to fail. Much that perhaps ought to appear in such a book as this has been omitted, as it appears to the Author that the question of draught, for example, is not of'the same importance with liquid fuel as it is with solid fuels. More might be said on the subject of flue-gas proportion, but this again has been so fully treated by other writers that it did not seem desirable at present to deal with it more fully. The most important detail of liquid fuel apparatus is the furnace and the provision of air, and of means to secure combustion and conserve temperature to enable combustion to be made perfect. Mr. Horace Allen kindly revised the section on gas analysis. Students of liquid fuel combustion will find enormous masses of information in the past volumes of the Engineer, Engineering, and other technical papers. Much of this information is duplicated and historical, and the Author has found it necessary to eliminate almost all such matter and confine his space to systems now living or of recent use, or of a form recognized as useful to - day. Undoubtedly Aydon and the late Admiral Selwyn did much to urge the use of liquid fuel, but the latter injured the value of his best work by regarding steam as a combustible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Liquid Fuel for Mechanical and Industrial Purposes Indeed, since the year 1860, about which time the scientific application of liquid fuel to industrial purposes may be said to have commenced, it has made most rapid strides, and in 1870 it was used during the siege of Paris, when coal had given out and M. Fernand Hue, in his work entitled Aux Pays de Petrole, ' tells us that M. Sainte-claire Deville's furnace for burning petroleum in a liquid state was the means of enabling Paris to keep several of its large factories going during that' terrible year, as well as to grind its flour by steam. Book Fuels and Their Combustion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fuels and Their Combustion Classic Reprint written by Robert T. Haslam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fuels and Their Combustion Efficiency in combustion and fuel utilization is daily assum ing added importance as the most accessible supplies Of our best fuels approach depletion, and as fuel costs advance. Recent years have seen such widespread adoption Of new methods Of fuel utilization that the science Of combustion has not kept abreast Of practice. This book - the outgrowth Of a lecture course at the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology - covers the field broadly and in so far as possible points out the under lying principles on which further progress must be based. It is intended to meet the needs Of men using fuels in industry, and Of students in technical schools and colleges. It is believed that this volume will serve in two ways: first, by giving a com prehensive treatment of the subject, and second, by means Of numerous references guiding him into further and more intensive study. In order to give the reader the proper viewpoint, the first subjects treated are the origin, composition and production Of the natural fuels - coal, petroleum and natural gas. In the chapters devoted to combustion equipment, representative types are described as illustrative Of modern design. Since the interpretation Of combustion data depends on calculations based on the common combustion reactions, this phase Of the subject is presented in considerable detail. Secondary or manufactured fuels - producer, water, Oil and coal gas - are given special prom inence in view Of their rapidly growing importance. Since the flow Of air and flue gases and heat transfer are inseparably connected with the capacity and efficiency Of combustion equip ment, the book concludes with three chapters dealing with these subjects. The decision as to the amount Of space to be allocated to each subject is a matter of individual judgment, and the authors, in making this decision, have been fortunate in securing the advice of many engaged in the industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion of Liquid Fuel Sprays outlines the fundamentals of the combustion of sprays in a unified way which may be applied to any technological application. The book begins with a discussion of the general nature of spray combustion, the sources of liquid fuels used in spray combustion, biomass sources of liquid fuels, and the nature and properties of fuel oils. Subsequent chapters focus on the properties of sprays, the atomization of liquid fuels, and the theoretical modeling of the behavior of a spray flame in a combustion chamber. The nature and control of pollutants from spray combustion, the formation of deposits in oil-fired systems, and the combustion of sprays in furnaces and engines are elucidated as well. The text is intended for students undertaking courses or research in fuel, combustion, and energy studies.

Book The Calorific Power of Fuels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Calorific Power of Fuels: With a Collection of Auxiliary Tables and Tables Showing the Heat of Combustion of Fuels, Solid, Liquid and Gaseous The books on fuels hitherto published in English contain only a few scattered facts regarding their calorific powers, how they are obtained, and the practical use made of them. Quite frequently these books are consulted for these facts, and the information they do contain is utilized to its fullest extent. It was thought that a book especially devoted to this subject containing all the reliable data might be of interest, and in furtherance of that idea this book is published.
