Book excerpt: The name on the screen was "Absinthe." But I knew her as the sultry voice blowing up my phone for late night chats about Proust and Hemingway interspersed between the filthiest little ... conversations. We'd never met. Until the day she walked into my office, her cherry lips wrapped around a candy apple sucker and an all too familiar voice that said, "You wanted to see me, Principal Hawthorne?"

Book Told by an Idiot

Download or read book Told by an Idiot written by Rose Macaulay and published by . This book was released on 1923 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set between 1879 and 1919, this family saga covers three to four generations of the Garden family. The lives of the six children are affected by their father, a clergyman whose frequent shifts in religious sympathies generate a sense of the provisionality of all systems of belief. The diverse fates of the six children also mirror the intellectual fashions of the ages through which they live. The book is divided into four parts: Victorian, Fin-de-Siècle, Edwardian, Georgian and the Georgian part is further sub-divided into three periods, namely Circus, Smash, and Debris. So though each child epitomises an aspect of social and intellectual change, the overall effect is of a cyclical view of history or history as 'indefinite sameness' as she puts it an essay. There are four daughters: Roma, the daughter whose intellectual detachment comes closest to the narrator's voice, loves an intellectual aesthete who is murdered by the relatives of his Russian wife; Stanley (f) goes to Somerville and is a politically passionate intellectual, tragically besotted by Parnell; Una, the youngest, epitomises the less intellectual aspects of the New Women.

Book Short Bus

  • Release : 2013-10-01
  • ISBN : 1937875733
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Short Bus written by Brian Allen Carr and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Bus is a darkly humorous collection of linked stories set in the southern haunts of coastal Texas--near where the Rio Grande dumps its brackish water into the Gulf of Mexico. The stories in this book ponder deformity in all its forms. Fetuses twist their mustaches, feet float in jars, a special- education teacher aims to rob a bank with the aid of his students. But binding these stories is a gentle humanity. Brian Allen Carr moves his grotesque characters toward the hollows of hearts, heaving despicable actions toward tender outcomes. Short Bus is a book about understanding the worst of us, smiling at that which makes us shudder. “Brian Allen Carr’s brain must be a snarl of firing pistons, sizzling fuses, hoses leaking blood and tequila and hydraulic oil. How else can you explain the twisted machinery of his stories? Each of them is a disturbing journey that will thrill and educate you in the sunlit haze of the Texas/Mexico border—and the sometimes subterranean darkness of the human heart.”--Benjamin Percy, author of The Wilding and Refresh, Refresh “Brian Allen Carr balances the harshness of his characters’ lives with beautiful and precise language, making parched land feel lush. Carr writes the best kind of stories--stories that only he could have written.” --Mary Miller (author of Big World) "Brian Allen Carr has written a short story collection that is everything hardworking--the characters, the scenery, the sentences--all form to build a machine crafted to break hearts along the border. A ridiculously strong first collection."--Shane Jones (author of Light Boxes)

Book The Secret Life of Algernon Pendleton

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A murderously funny fugue of the macabre ... Grave matters, elegantly dispatched." — The New York Times Book Review Algernon Pendleton — call him Al — lives by himself in a suburban Boston house loaded with treasures collected by his Egyptologist great-grandfather. His solitary life, punctuated by occasional visits to a shop where he trades artifacts for ready cash, would be lonely if not for his confidential chats with Eulalia, a talking porcelain pitcher. When an old army buddy shows up with a suitcase full of money, Eulalia has some less-than-friendly ideas about separating their houseguest from his fortune. Meanwhile, a professor of archaeology is getting increasingly suspicious about the shop's supply of rare and valuable antiquities. Thanks to Eulalia's advice, Al soon finds himself trapped in a murder mystery that unfolds with ample doses of black humor. "You have to have a heart of stone not to love Algernon Pendleton, the mad-as-a-hatter murderer … Curl up with him and your doom is sealed ... Greenan has fashioned an excursion in to the macabre that is in a class by itself." — Saturday Review "Oddly appealing, a sort of Arsenic and Old Lace approach that really works in terms of entertainment if you have a taste for the fantastic." — Publishers Weekly

Book Lipstick Traces

    Book Details:
  • Author : Greil Marcus
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-11-30
  • ISBN : 0674736850
  • Pages : 496 pages

Download or read book Lipstick Traces written by Greil Marcus and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greil Marcus, author of Mystery Train, widely acclaimed as the best book ever written about America as seen through its music, began work on this new book out of a fascination with the Sex Pistols: that scandalous antimusical group, invented in London in 1975 and dead within two years, which sparked the emergence of the culture called punk. “I am an antichrist!” shouted singer Johnny Rotten—where in the world of pop music did that come from? Looking for an answer, with a high sense of the drama of the journey, Marcus takes us down the dark paths of counterhistory, a route of blasphemy, adventure, and surprise. This is no mere search for cultural antecedents. Instead, what Marcus so brilliantly shows is that various kinds of angry, absolute demands—demands on society, art, and all the governing structures of everyday life—seem to be coded in phrases, images, and actions passed on invisibly, but inevitably, by people quite unaware of each other. Marcus lets us hear strange yet familiar voices: of such heretics as the Brethren of the Free Spirit in medieval Europe and the Ranters in seventeenth-century England; the dadaists in Zurich in 1916 and Berlin in 1918, wearing death masks, chanting glossolalia; one Michel Mourre, who in 1950 took over Easter Mass at Notre-Dame to proclaim the death of God; the Lettrist International and the Situationist International, small groups of Paris—based artists and writers surrounding Guy Debord, who produced blank-screen films, prophetic graffiti, and perhaps the most provocative social criticism of the 1950s and ’60s; the rioting students and workers of May ’68, scrawling cryptic slogans on city walls and bringing France to a halt; the Sex Pistols in London, recording the savage “Anarchy in the U.K.” and “God Save the Queen.”Although the Sex Pistols shape the beginning and the end of the story, Lipstick Traces is not a book about music; it is about a common voice, discovered and transmitted in many forms. Working from scores of previously unexamined and untranslated essays, manifestos, and filmscripts, from old photographs, dada sound poetry, punk songs, collages, and classic texts from Marx to Henri Lefebvre, Marcus takes us deep behind the acknowledged events of our era, into a hidden tradition of moments that would seem imaginary except for the fact that they are real: a tradition of shared utopias, solitary refusals, impossible demands, and unexplained disappearances. Written with grace and force, humor and an insistent sense of tragedy and danger, Lipstick Traces tells a story as disruptive and compelling as the century itself.

Poem and Preface excerpt in "Absinthe" published in 2002 by: Xlibris Press. Copyright A. Nelson Preface Each one of us are murders of free will. Each one of us are rapists of time. We each seek to forge a memory- a lasting impression, upon the fabric of the void. I find solace in my memories. Of times long past and times to be made in the future that I remember yet I do not forget. It's all Maya and we are repeating a fruitless, useless, songless tune to the dance of a hapless god. This book is dedicated to escape and to freedom, and, ultimately- for us to achieve our own peace- whatever and wherever that may be. POEM EXCERPT: Dissection --- We pulled out all the emotions Restored all the virtues with pity Replaced the heart with a stone Tore out the eyes and made empty sockets of pain We righted the gun And cocked the trigger - Yet The bullet bled -- And I was left an empty hole :AN Please check my online website for more of my titles! www.aurealianelson.com Other Books: Swallowing Jewels (IUniverse Press) Non Traditional Families (IUniverse Press) The Split Brain: An Analysis of Schizophrenia (Iuniverse Press) Musings of a Mad Madam (IUniverse Press)
