Download or read book Early Reading Instruction written by Diane McGuinness and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Reading Instruction is a comprehensive analysis of the research evidence from early writing systems to computer models of reading. In this book, Diane McGuinness provides an innovative solution to the "reading war"—the century-old debate over the efficacy of phonics (sound-based) versus whole-word (meaning- based) methods. She has developed a prototype—a set of elements that are critical to the success of a reading method. McGuinness shows that all writing systems, without exception, are based on a sound unit in the language. This fact, and other findings by paleographers, provides a platform for the prototype. Other elements of the prototype are based on modern research. For example, observational studies in the classroom show that time spent on three activities strongly predicts reading success: learning phoneme/symbol correspondences, practice at blending and segmenting phonemes in words, and copying/writing words, phrases, and sentences. Most so-called literacy activities have no effect, and some, like sight word memorization, have a strongly negative effect. The National Reading Panel (2000) summarized the research on reading methods after screening out thousands of studies that failed to meet minimum scientific standards. In an in-depth analysis of this evidence, McGuinness shows that the most successful methods (children reading a year or more above age norms) include all the elements in the prototype. Finally, she argues, because phonics-type methods are consistently shown to be superior to whole-word methods in studies dating back to the 1960s, it makes no sense to continue this line of research. The most urgent question for future research is how to get the most effective phonics programs into the classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influential first volume of the Handbook of Reading Research, published in 1984, was out of print for a number of years. This classic work, newly reprinted and available once again, includes comprehensive, authoritative, and effectively written chapters from a variety of research perspectives. With the breadth to appeal to a wide audience, yet the depth to speak authoritatively to various subgroups within that audience, this volume is an essential resource for researchers, students, and professionals across the field of reading and literacy education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does research tell us about how teachers can most effectively help young students learn to read? In Research-Based Methods of Reading Instruction, Grades K3, Sharon Vaughn and Sylvia Linan-Thompson explore the research on reading, providing a comprehensive overview of the five core instructional areas and how each affects student achievement: Phonemic awarenessPhonics and Word StudyFluencyVocabularyComprehension The authors include dozens of reading activities and lesson plans that teachers can use immediately, all of which have worked in actual classrooms and are grounded in solid research. A glossary and annotated resource lists will help you better understand key reading concepts and find reliable resources, including relevant Web sites.Whether your students have special needs or show no apparent learning difficulties, this book will expand your repertoire of teaching strategies and help you put students on the road to literacy.Sharon Vaughn is the director and H.E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to read is not natural for many individuals, who remain dependent on the skill, knowledge, and persistence of their teachers to acquire reading proficiency. Reading instruction, however, can be designed with greater validity than ever before because of a solid, converging body of scientific research on reading acquisition, reading processes, and reading disabilities. This special issue presents some of the major advances in methodologically and theoretically sound treatment research by the use of comprehensive and multivariate treatment protocols and individual growth-curve modeling.

Book excerpt: "In 1997, Congress asked the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in consultation with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read. The panel was charged with providing a report that should present the panel's conclusions, an indication of the readiness for application in the classroom of the results of this research, and, if appropriate, a strategy for rapidly disseminating this information to facilitate effective reading instruction in the schools" -- p. 1-1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1979. These volumes explore the range and depth of our theoretical and practical knowledge about early reading instruction. Contributors-psychologists, linguists, instructional designers, reading and special education experts were asked to address three questions: (1) What is the nature of skilled reading? (2) How is reading skill acquired? (3) What do the nature of skilled reading and the process of acquiring reading skill jointly suggest for reading instruction? This is Volume I of a collection of essays looking at topics such as reading stages, coding and comprehension skills, word recognition, language skills, instruction and teaching theories and an analysis of reading two beginning reading programs.
