Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference represents the first time in my life when I felt it was a misfor tune, rather than a major cause of my happiness, that I do conservation work in New Guinea. Yes, it is true that New Guinea is a fascinating microcosm, it has fascinating birds and people, and it has large expanses of undisturbed rainforest. In the course of my work there, helping the Indonesian government and World Wildlife Fund set up a comprehensive national park system, I have been able to study animals in areas without any human population. But New Guinea has one serious drawback: it has no primates, except for humans. Thus, I come to this conference on primate conservation as an underprivileged and emotionally deprived observer, rather than as an involved participant. Nevertheless, it is easy for anyone to become interested in primate conserva tion. The public cares about primates. More specifically, to state things more realistically, many people care some of the time about some primates. Primates are rivaled only by birds, pandas, and the big cats in their public appeal. For some other groups of animals, the best we can say is that few people care about them, infrequently. For most groups of animals, no one cares about them, ever.

Book Monkeys The Suburban Survivors

Download or read book Monkeys The Suburban Survivors written by Hiren B. Soni, Ph.D. and published by Google Book Publishers. This book was released on with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primate societies are structured organizations with fairly clear social bonding that determine the patterns of interactions between different classes of individuals. Two important factors like kinship and dominance rank regulate the group cooperation and competition among individuals. Individual primates can occasionally alter their usual patterns of interactions, especially when the social or ecological environment makes such advantageous behavioral flexibility. Monkey is a common name that may refer to groups or species of mammals. The Hanuman Langur, Presbytis entellus, a member of Indian Colobinae is perhaps the most widely distributed of the non-human primates found in the Indian Subcontinent. It is a highly adaptable species surviving in a variety of habitats. The Book Monkeys: The Suburban Survivors focuses on primates, Hanuman Langur / Gray Langur (Presbytis entellus), taxonomy, habits, habitat, physical description, diet, reproduction, infanticide, behavior, lifespan, social structure, parental care, vocalization, range, tail, IUCN status and threats. This book summarizes the brief account on primates, groups of primates, status of primates in South Asia especially Hanuman Langur. The present book is an outcome of systematic study on Presbytis entellus covering various aspects like distribution of monkeys, substrate preference, floristic composition, use of non-tree substrates and tree species, time preference, time-wise occurrence, tree phenology, zone-wise and time-wise activity budget, use of vertical and horizontal tree canopies by monkeys, time-wise use of tree canopies, etc. This book will definitely be a ready reference material and handy study guide for students, researchers, scientists and primate conservationists around the world.

Book Primate Ecology and Conservation

Download or read book Primate Ecology and Conservation written by Eleanor Sterling and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of primate ecology and conservation has advanced rapidly in recent years. This practical volume brings together a group of distinguished primate researchers to synthesize field, laboratory, and conservation management techniques for primate ecology and conservation. The synthesis focuses on new and emerging field methods alongside a comprehensive presentation of laboratory and data analysis techniques, as well as the latest methods for determining conservation status and conservation management. This book's particular focus is on innovative ways to study primates in a changing world, including emerging methods such as non-invasive genetic techniques and advanced spatial modeling. In addition to synthesizing field and lab methods, the authors also discuss data interpretation, as well as important guiding questions and principles for students and researchers to consider as they plan research projects in primate ecology and conservation such as: how to choose a field site, acquire research permits, connect with local authorities, communities and researchers, and many other considerations. Although three chapters are dedicated to conservation methods, consideration of conservation status and threats to primate populations are considered throughout this volume where appropriate. This latest publication in the Techniques in Ecology and Conservation Series aims to provide a practical empirical reference text with an international scope, appropriate for graduate students, researchers, and conservation professionals across the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics on the Ark presents a passionate, multivocal discussion—among zoo professionals, activists, conservation biologists, and philosophers—about the future of zoos and aquariums, the treatment of animals in captivity, and the question of whether the individual, the species, or the ecosystem is the most important focus in conservation efforts. Contributors represent all sides of the issues. Moving from the fundamental to the practical, from biodiversity to population regulation, from animal research to captive breeding, Ethics on the Ark represents an important gathering of the many fervent and contentious viewpoints shaping the wildlife conservation debate.

Book Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century

Download or read book Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century written by Gene P. Sackett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursery Rearing of Nonhuman Primates in the 21st Century describes how and why nursery rearing of primates can produce adaptable juveniles and adults for research, conservation, and display-educational purposes. The volume details the history of nursery rearing since the mid-19th century, the outcomes of varied nursery rearing methods, the contemporary goals of nursery rearing as well as reference data derived from species commonly reared in nursery or hand-feeding situations. Examples of the changing goals of nursery rearing covered in this volume are the need for biological containment in disease research, the production of specific pathogen-free colonies by removal of neonates from the mother, the production of phenotypes for genetic and molecular biology studies, and the breeding of endangered species for conservation or research purposes.
