Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbus, Georgia, began as a rough frontier trading town in 1828. As its focus on the sale and shipment of cotton evolved into cotton manufacturing, massive textile mills grew up along the riverbank. Today the mills are closing, but Columbus, undergoing an economic and cultural renaissance, keeps one eye on its colorful past. As the city's oldest graveyard, Linwood Cemetery bears witness to the city's rich history. Graced by over 100 monuments signed by their 19th-century carvers, Linwood is more than a cemetery: it is a virtual outdoor museum. Historic Linwood Cemetery transforms the old gravestones into flesh-and-blood stories of the people who once walked the streets of Columbus. In these pages readers will meet a broad spectrum of former residents now resting in the hallowed soil of Linwood-stone carvers, founding fathers and mothers, military heroes, steamboat designers, past managers of the city wharf, builders of the town's first roads and railroads, and the town's best ice cream maker.

Download or read book Historic Linwood Cemetery of Columbus Muscogee Co Georgia written by Lea Dowd and published by . This book was released on 2006-07-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolores Autry's original Linwood Cemetery book was a great example of her attention to detail, patience and tenacity. Over approximately five years, she mapped the entire cemetery and subdivided it into sections. She walked each section writing down each grave location and all headstone inscriptions. She took that large list and researched through newspapers, copies of historical documents, old family bibles when available and any other possible sources of information. After publication, her book quickly became the definitive source for researching Linwood Cemetery. Very few copies and no original were left of this work. The authors knew the value of what Mrs. Autry had produced and with permission from her family began to republish and make additions to her original work. All proceeds are donated to the Historic Linwood Foundation for restoration projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1828 as a planned city by the Georgia Legislature, Columbus prospered due to its location on the Chattahoochee River. Industry sprang up along the shores of the Chattahoochee and shaped Columbus's identity as one of Georgia's premier cities. Today a thriving metropolis, it is the Columbus of yesteryear that is illuminated within these pages. Early postcard views reflect the city from around 1905 to 1942, showcasing many of its businesses, neighborhoods, and parks. Included are places virtually unknown to citizens today--the Bell Tower, the City Market, North Highlands Park, and Wildwood Park--as well as those that were landmarks a century ago and landmarks still: the Iron Bank, the Springer Opera House, the Union Depot, the YMCA, and Fort Benning.

  • Author : Charles A. Misulia
  • Publisher : University Alabama Press
  • Release : 2019-09-10
  • ISBN : 0817359761
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Columbus Georgia 1865 written by Charles A. Misulia and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoroughly researched account of a memorable Civil War battle Columbus, Georgia, 1865 is a comprehensive study of the Easter Sunday, April 16, 1865, conflict, which occurred in the dark of night and extended over a mile and half through a series of forts and earthworks and was finally decided in an encounter on a bridge a thousand feet in length. This volume offers the first complete account of this battle, examining and recounting in depth not only the composition and actions of the contending forces, which numbered some three thousand men on each side, but meticulously detailing the effect of the engagement on the city of Columbus and its environs. Misulia’s study fills in an omission in the grand account of our cataclysmic national struggle and adds a significant chapter to the history of an important regional city. In addition, Misulia takes on the long-vexing question of which encounter should be recognized as the last battle of the Civil War and argues persuasively that Columbus, Georgia, qualifies for this distinction on a number of counts.

Book More Than Peanuts

Download or read book More Than Peanuts written by Edith Powell and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The further we go the bigger it gets and the more interesting. I don’t know what we would have done without you." So wrote Bob Barry, a White executive with the Tom Huston Peanut Company, to George Washington Carver, the shy, unassuming scientific genius of Tuskegee Institute. The two, along with Grady Porter and Tom Huston himself, embarked on a quest to grow the peanut industry in the South by understanding and solving the problems faced by farmers. From 1924 until the end of Carver’s life, these four men, three White and one Black, sustained a professional partnership and a personal friendship built on mutual admiration, respect, trust, and purpose. Their work attracted the attention and support of university and government scientists around the country as well as agricultural industry professionals and their most important audience, farmers in the Southeast. Their effort laid the foundation for research to support the fledgling peanut industry, which became one of the region’s most important cash crops, with a farm value totaling over $1 billion in 2020. More Than Peanuts follows the journey of these four men, through the letters they wrote to each other and to others who joined them on the way. The letters document a fascinating early example of cooperation between farmers, private business, university researchers, and government policymakers to grow a prosperous industry. Even more importantly, they are eloquent testimony to a lasting interracial friendship in the segregated South—so much more than peanuts.
