Book Links of Friendship Classic Reprint

Download or read book Links of Friendship Classic Reprint written by Joseph Seamon Cotter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Links of Friendship W. T. Peyton, a well-known colored educator of this city, whom he regards as his greatest benefactor. Mr. Cotter is wholly self-taught in English literature and composition. He fell naturally into rhyming when he began to write, but he received no instruction beyond the most elementary hints as to meter. Whatever he has done since has been the result of unaided effort. Six years ago several of his poems appeared in the courier-journal, this being his first publication outside of one or two newspapers conducted by men of his own race. I was then city editor of the courier-journal, and his modest tender of some Christmas verses to me led to an inquiry which revealed his story of unpretentious but earnest and conscientious toil. He laid no claim to being a poet, but his verses were interesting and always worth publication. Without referring to the merits of this little book, it is proper to call attention to the cheerful optimism and reverent faith that find expression in his lines. The author submits it with modesty, and only asks that it be judged in accordance with its claims. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Book of Friendship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Friendship Classic Reprint written by Samuel McChord Crothers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Friendship Shakespeare describes the way in which the essence of fleeting beauty is preserved. "For never-resting time leads summer on To hideous winter, and confounds him there: Sap checked with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone, Beauty o'ersnowed and bareness everywhere: Then were not summer's distillation left A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass, Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft, Now it nor no remembrance what it was, But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet Leese but their show, their substance still lives sweet." A Book of Friendship is an attempt to collect some of these "flowers distilled" from the world's literature. As the generations pass, friends are separated. But theirs are expressions of feeling that are imperishable. The "substance still lives sweet." It is pleasant not only to know what wise men have thought about friendship, but how friendly souls have actually felt. There must be a vast variety in the incidents of friendships and a unity in its essential nature. No abstract or philosophical description can satisfy us in regard to an intimate personal experience which we all have felt. I can imagine a warm-hearted friend reading Emerson's Essay on Friendship, and wondering what it is all about. Even Winter has its pastimes, Merry sports for Childhood's day, Wisdom's curtain veils the future From the little friends at play; Swiftly years are gliding onward, Childhood vanishes, and youth, And perchance the hand of sorrow Lifts the veil that covers truth. Then the friends who treat us kindly, Reaching out a helping hand, Make the golden link of friendship Something beautiful and grand; Lighting up the darkened places, Lifting heavy weights of care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Friendship: A Story So the carriage, bearing the Misses Moira, of Craig Moira, their plaids, pugs, ear-trumpets, and courier, continued its course across the Roman Campagna, and up the steep and wooded roads that led to the old Castle of Fiordelisa. The Misses Moira, of Moira, lived on their own lands in Caithness, were very rich, very ugly, very eccentric, spoke with a strong native accent, and delivered their opinions uncalled for; two of their sister's children were respectively the Duchess of Forfar and the Marquis of Fingal; the younger was the echo of the elder - both wore spectacles, both were deaf; and neither ever forgot that the Moiras, of Craig Moira, had the right to sit before their sovereign, and were allied with half the bluest blood and highest names in Great Britain. They were now about to call on one of their connections, and gazed anxiously through their spectacles for the Castle of Fior delisa, where she dwelt. Fiordelisa came at last in sight, a grey, rambling, and ancient pile, set amidst cypress and ilex woods, with its gardens straying down into its farm-lands in Italian fashion, covering hills and plains with corn and vine and olive. Book excerpt: When a group of middle-class buddies obsessed with golf set up a bet to see who can finagle their way onto the nearby private course, their friendship is tested in ways they had never expected in this humorous novel from Rick Reilly, one of America’s most popular sportswriters. Missing Links is the story of four middle class buddies who live outside of Boston and for years have been 1) utterly obsessed with golf and 2) a regular foursome at Ponkaquoque Municipal Course and Deli, not so fondly known as Ponky, the single worst golf course in America. Just adjacent to these municipal links lies the Mayflower Country Club, the most exclusive private course in all of Boston and a major needle in their collective sides. Frustrated by the Mayflower's finely manicured greens and snooty members, three of Ponky's finest and most courageous—Two Down, Dannie, and Stick—set up a bet: $1,000.00 apiece, and the first man to somehow finagle his way on to the Mayflower course takes all. Lying, cheating, and forgery are encouraged, to put it mildly, and with the constant heckling and rare aid of Chunkin' Charlie, Hoover, and Bluto--a few more of Ponky's elite--the games begin. One of the three will eventually play the Mayflower's course, but their friendships--and everything else--will change as various truths unravel and the old Ponky starts looking like the home they never should have left.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Friendship: A Tale Dr. Johnson, of whose works my readers may perceive I am particularly fond, has described the works of fiction, which exhibit life in its true state, diversified only by accidents that daily happen in the world, and influenced by passions and qualities which are really to be found in conversing with mankind, the Comedy of Romance. But as no new play appears without a prologue, it is also necessary a work of this kind should have a preface. The dramatic writer often gets his prologue from the pen of genius, whose name alone is sufficient to procure it a favourable reception: it has also the advantage of being spoken by some favourite performer, who gives it all the grace of action and expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Friendship Why not enjoy our friends instead of trying to reform them? TO be sure, that household keeps outrageous hours, and you are morally certain that if they went to bed at ten o'clock and had breakfast at eight, instead of retiring at one O'clock and eating breakfast on their way to the front gate, they would be healthier and happier. So they would, but they will never do it for all your protestations. The best thing you can do is to see that your own family get to bed at ten, and accept the other family as they are. And maybe, some day, seeing how happy and healthy your family is, or wishing to please you because of their genuine affection, they will re form themselves.
