Book Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques to Assess Land Use land Cover Changes in the Nan Watershed Thailand

Download or read book Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques to Assess Land Use land Cover Changes in the Nan Watershed Thailand written by Chamaporn Paiboonvorachat and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Landsat 5 TM images obtained in 1995, 2000, and 2005 were used to categorize land use and land cover (LULC) and assess LULC changes and dynamics in the Nan watershed, Thailand using hybrid classification and post-classification change detection methods, respectively. Aerial photographs, digital LULC maps, and topographic maps were utilized to assess classification accuracy. Classified images together with ancillary data using Multi-Criteria Geographic Information System (GIS) Modeling were used to identify potential risk areas of soil erosion. The overall classification accuracy derived from the stratified random sampling pattern was 80.9% for 1995, 77.4% for 2000, and 86.0% for 2005. The results are satisfactory for LULC classification. Uncertainty of classification was mainly observed in green vegetation cover categories, which are forests, agricultural lands, and natural plants in wetlands. The study period revealed a significant increase in paddy fields and croplands at the expense of closed canopy forests. Paddy fields and croplands increased by 2.56% and 3.37%, respectively. Closed canopy forests, on the other hand, decreased by 3.64%. This change was caused by an increase in population within the watershed during the study period. Closed canopy forest, open canopy forest, and cropland categories were major drivers of LULCC in the Nan watershed. In 2010, the probability of change from forests to paddy fields and croplands are approximately 0.13 and 0.16, respectively. Expansions of high risk areas of erosion in northwestern and southeastern regions of the watershed in the two later years related to an increase of agricultural lands. Deforestation and environmental degradation in the Nan watershed are mainly influenced by population growth and increase demand for land uses to support human activities.

Book Assessment of land use changes in Mukdaham and Nakhon Phanom provinces NE Thailand by means of Remote Sensing

Download or read book Assessment of land use changes in Mukdaham and Nakhon Phanom provinces NE Thailand by means of Remote Sensing written by Nils Rennenberg and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2002-11-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Tropical land use changes, predominantly the clearing of tropical rain and monsoon forests, have long been recognized as a trend with dramatic consequences. FAO estimated the global loss of rain forest area at 0.6 to 0.9 % per annum in 1993. Most of it can be attributed to the conversion of forest lands to agricultural areas. In Southeast Asia, two countries have suffered from this phenomenon more than any other nations: the Philippines and Thailand. Between 1961 and 1975, the forest reserves of Thailand have been reduced from 57 % to 37 % of the total area, while at the same time the area put to agricultural use has almost doubled. Only a small part of that process was due to organized resettlement programmes; to an overwhelming extent the deforestation has been performed 'illegally' by spontaneous activities of the rural population. The share of forests further declined to 28.9 % in 1998, at a current rate of -0.7 % per year, meaning that Thailand's forest cover has roughly halved since 1960. The author of this thesis stayed as a visiting researcher at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), immediately north of Bangkok, for 6 months from November 2000 until April 2001. The AIT is a small international university for graduate studies with students and teachers from more than 40 countries. The core institution for this scientific cooperation was the Asian Center for Research on Remote Sensing (ACRoRS) of the AIT's School of Advanced Technologies (SAT). Field work in Northeast Thailand was carried out in two legs in February and April 2001. As an underlying principle of this study, it was attempted to incorporate problems from the realms of social as well as physical geography, i.e. to maintain a balance between questions of applied geography (regional studies) and remote sensing. This also means that no special focus was put on advanced RS methodology such as the development of new image processing techniques; the study is rather based on a somewhat holistic approach, joining aspects from many different fields of science as diverse as geology, geomorphology, climatology, agriculture and agricultural economics, sociology, ethnology, politics, and spatial planning. Accordingly, the basic objectives were: - to give a geographical description/characterization of the Northeastern Region of Thailand in terms of its physical properties as well as its social and economical peculiarities. - to try a quantification of forest [...]

Book Land Use Change Monitoring and Modelling Using GIS and Remote Sensing Data for Watershed Scale in Thailand

Download or read book Land Use Change Monitoring and Modelling Using GIS and Remote Sensing Data for Watershed Scale in Thailand written by Huan Vu Duc and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM), Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) images obtained in 1991, 2005 and 2014 with maps, and field survey data were used to classify land use and land cover (LULC) changes over 23 years and predict soil erosion risk locations in the Khlong Kui watershed (73,700 ha), Prachuap Khiri Khan province, Thailand. Classified images together with soil features, slope and rainfall data were used to identify potential risk areas of soil erosion. Based on field check data, the overall classification accuracy was accessed from random samples that resulted as 80% for 1991, 83% for 2005 and 86% for 2014. The study discovered that rice field and rangeland increased by 1.12 and 2.81%, respectively, deciduous forest, and on the other hand, it decreased by 8.28%. GIS analysis identified the potential risk areas of soil erosion as 46,431 ha (0.63%) at very high risk.
