Book Case and Aspect in Slavic

Download or read book Case and Aspect in Slavic written by Kylie R. Richardson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-06-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of structural case in syntax is arguably one of the most controversial topics in syntactic theory with important implications for semantic theory. This book focuses on some of the most puzzling case marking patterns in the Slavic languages and ties these patterns to different types of aspectual phenomena, showing that there is after all a pattern in the seeming chaos of case in the Slavic languages. Kylie Richardson addresses links between the case marking on objects and the event structure of a verb phrase in Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and also shows that the links between case and aspect in the Slavic languages belong to a much larger pattern found in language in general. She also focuses on links between case and grammatical aspect in depictive, predicative participle, and copular constructions in the East Slavic languages. The book will appeal to scholars and advanced students of aspect, and to all Slavicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. General problems are studied from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Conclusions are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. Special emphasis is given to little-known languages, whose analysis may shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics.

Book Noun Combination in Interlanguage

Download or read book Noun Combination in Interlanguage written by Christiane Bongartz and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines the effects of first language typology on the interlanguage of learners of English as a second language. Adapting William Rutherford's (1983) view of interlanguage as the typological intersection between the first language and the second language, the study demonstrates how first language effects subtly shape learner choices even at near native proficiency. Grounded in the tradition of transfer research and in the research program in generative grammar, the evidence presented shows the distribution of noun+noun compounds such as the love song and phrasal noun combinations such as the song about love in interlanguage data. These two patterns, it is argued, are systematically related by determiner properties and the process of noun incorporation. Obtained from a multi-task cross-sectional experiment, the data illustrates that learners with Czech as their first language use phrasal constructs (the song about love) significantly more often in production than learners with Mandarin Chinese as their first language, whose preferred choice are noun+noun compounds (the love song). The differences between the learner groups reflect the use of overt case marking in the first language Czech and the absence of overt case marking in the first language Mandarin Chinese.

Book New applications of Role Reference Grammar

Download or read book New applications of Role Reference Grammar written by Rolf Kailuweit and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part is comprised of seven articles dealing with possible applications of RRG to diachronic syntax and grammaticalization. Beside an overview article, the papers are mainly concerned with changes either in the interaction between topic-focus structure and the Layered Structure of the Clause or in the selection of Privileged Syntactic Arguments and case assignment. The second part consists of applications of RRG to Romance languages, and most of these applications are mainly concerned with the syntax-semantics interface. Different aspects of verbs (verbs as operators, verbs as sentence predicates, verb alternations) and the syntactic and semantic structures they involve are analyzed from an RRG perspective.

Book Language Contact in Europe

Download or read book Language Contact in Europe written by Bridget Drinka and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive new work provides extensive evidence for the essential role of language contact as a primary trigger for change. Unique in breadth, it traces the spread of the periphrastic perfect across Europe over the last 2,500 years, illustrating at each stage the micro-responses of speakers and communities to macro-historical pressures. Among the key forces claimed to be responsible for normative innovations in both eastern and western Europe is 'roofing' - the superstratal influence of Greek and Latin on languages under the influence of Greek Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism respectively. The author provides a new interpretation of the notion of 'sprachbund', presenting the model of a three-dimensional stratified convergence zone, and applies this model to her analysis of the have and be perfects within the Charlemagne sprachbund. The book also tackles broader theoretical issues, for example, demonstrating that the perfect tense should not be viewed as a universal category.

Book Multiple Preverbs in Ancient Indo European Languages

Download or read book Multiple Preverbs in Ancient Indo European Languages written by Chiara Zanchi and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates multiple preverbs (PVs) in some ancient IE languages (Vedic, Homeric Greek, Old Church Slavic, and Old Irish). After an introduction, it opens with the theoretical framework and a typologically-oriented overview of PVs. It then gives quantitative data about multiple PV composites and carries out philological, formal, semantic, and syntactic analyses on them. The comparison among these languages suggests that a process of accumulation lies behind multiple PV composites. Also, PV ordering is explained by different factors: semantic solidarity between PVs and verbs PVs tendency to be specified by event participants, PVs etymologies, influence from other languages. The book also contributes to casting light on the reasons for PVs grammaticalization and lexicalization. These are two distinct reanalyses triggered by the same factor, i.e. the mentioned semantic solidarity, which makes PVs be felt as redundant. They are thus reassigned salient pieces of information as actional markers (grammaticalization) or reinterpreted as part of the verb (lexicalization).
