Book The Behavior of Chemical Elements in Stars

Download or read book The Behavior of Chemical Elements in Stars written by Carlos Jaschek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite more than one century of observational stellar spectroscopy, the resulting data are not available in an easily accessible format. The necessity of such basic information is greater than ever, because new wavelength regions (ultraviolet, infrared) are now accessible and because modern receivers can only analyze short stretches of spectra, so that a careful pre-selection of strategic elements is mandatory. This book presents a summary of our knowledge of the behavior of all chemical elements identified in stars, based on observations rather than on their interpretations. Whenever possible the behavior is described quantitatively, with the help of equivalent widths in different types of stars, or different ionization stages, for both absorption and emission features. It will be essential to the spectroscopist when confronted with questions like the following: . What is the behavior of europium in metallic line stars or in S-type stars? Are the neutral lines of this element visible, are they strengthened or weakened with regard to normal dwarfs? A huge amount of data has been gathered by experts in the field and presented in a way that will be invaluable to professional astrophysicists, cosmochemists and their students.

Book Optical Emission Lines of the Elements

Download or read book Optical Emission Lines of the Elements written by Richard Payling and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2000-06-29 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique CD-ROM and print package comprising a fully searchable electronic database of emission lines for nearly 90 elements and a practical reference manual. Breaking away from the traditional compendia of emission lines, the database has been compiled using an algorithm which calculated all the electric-dipole emission lines for each element based on their electronic structure. Therefore this product contains wavelengths for lines that are very weak and only observable under optimum conditions. There is no detection limit, and the programme allows the user to adjust parameters to match the general characteristics of their source and spectrometer, making this a highly authoritative resource. The CD-ROM provides many valuable features including: * Information about all atomic and first ionic state lines in the range of 100 nm to 900 nm (in air or vacuum) associated with the known energy levels for most elements from hydrogen to uranium * Calculated transition probabilities for all lines * A database that allows the user to plot the calculated spectrum matching their selection of elements and wavelength range * Adjustable parameters so that the database can be customised to match the general characteristics of the user's own source and spectrometer. Accompanying the CD-ROM is a reference handbook which includes: * Contains 961,000 lines from 88 elements and 172 spectra * A calculation of the atomic transition probabilities for all lines * Detailed introduction explaining the electronic structure of the atom and how the wavelengths and intensities within the text and CD-ROM were calculated. Written by experts in the field of Optical Emissions this multimedia package is an indispensable guide to researchers and analysts using other OES techniques, as well as the libraries of institutes involved in the research and teaching of atomic spectroscopy and manufacturers of ICP, arc, spark and glow discharge spectrometers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The broad development of spectroscopy in our country and, in particular, the extensive industrial applications of methods of spectral analysis make the need for basic reference literature a pressing one. Tables of spectral lines, as basic, primary material necessary for the identifica tion of spectra, are the most important of these reference books. The need for such tables is acutely felt by all who work in spectroscopy, and numerous requests for such a book have been received by the Commission on Spectroscopy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. On the world book market there are fairly complete tables that cover a very great number of spectral lines and that have been complied rather carefully, although they are not free of errors. Tables of this kind are undoubtedly necessary in general spectroscopic research and must be included among the reference books of large scientific institutions. But the number of workers who need such complete tables is comparatively limited. Therefore, after long discussion it was deemed impractical to republish these tables.
