Book History of Banach Spaces and Linear Operators

Download or read book History of Banach Spaces and Linear Operators written by Albrecht Pietsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a distinguished specialist in functional analysis, this book presents a comprehensive treatment of the history of Banach spaces and (abstract bounded) linear operators. Banach space theory is presented as a part of a broad mathematics context, using tools from such areas as set theory, topology, algebra, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, etc. Equal emphasis is given to both spaces and operators. The book may serve as a reference for researchers and as an introduction for graduate students who want to learn Banach space theory with some historical flavor.

Book Monotone Dynamical Systems An Introduction to the Theory of Competitive and Cooperative Systems

Download or read book Monotone Dynamical Systems An Introduction to the Theory of Competitive and Cooperative Systems written by Hal L. Smith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comprehensive treatment of a rapidly developing area with many potential applications: the theory of monotone dynamical systems and the theory of competitive and cooperative differential equations. The primary aim is to provide potential users of the theory with techniques, results, and ideas useful in applications, while at the same time providing rigorous proofs. Among the topics discussed in the book are continuous-time monotone dynamical systems, and quasimonotone and nonquasimonotone delay differential equations. The book closes with a discussion of applications to quasimonotone systems of reaction-diffusion type. Throughout the book, applications of the theory to many mathematical models arising in biology are discussed. Requiring a background in dynamical systems at the level of a first graduate course, this book is useful to graduate students and researchers working in the theory of dynamical systems and its applications.

Book Positive Dynamical Systems in Discrete Time

Download or read book Positive Dynamical Systems in Discrete Time written by Ulrich Krause and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic, rigorous and self-contained treatment of positive dynamical systems. A dynamical system is positive when all relevant variables of a system are nonnegative in a natural way. This is in biology, demography or economics, where the levels of populations or prices of goods are positive. The principle also finds application in electrical engineering, physics and computer sciences. "The author has greatly expanded the field of positive systems in surprising ways." - Prof. Dr. David G. Luenberger, Stanford University(USA)

Book Boundary Value Problems in Abstract Kinetic Theory

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems in Abstract Kinetic Theory written by W. Greenberg and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to be a reasonably self -contained and fairly complete exposition of rigorous results in abstract kinetic theory. Throughout, abstract kinetic equations refer to (an abstract formulation of) equations which describe transport of particles, momentum, energy, or, indeed, any transportable physical quantity. These include the equations of traditional (neutron) transport theory, radiative transfer, and rarefied gas dynamics, as well as a plethora of additional applications in various areas of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering. The mathematical problems addressed within the monograph deal with existence and uniqueness of solutions of initial-boundary value problems, as well as questions of positivity, continuity, growth, stability, explicit representation of solutions, and equivalence of various formulations of the transport equations under consideration. The reader is assumed to have a certain familiarity with elementary aspects of functional analysis, especially basic semigroup theory, and an effort is made to outline any more specialized topics as they are introduced. Over the past several years there has been substantial progress in developing an abstract mathematical framework for treating linear transport problems. The benefits of such an abstract theory are twofold: (i) a mathematically rigorous basis has been established for a variety of problems which were traditionally treated by somewhat heuristic distribution theory methods; and (ii) the results obtained are applicable to a great variety of disparate kinetic processes. Thus, numerous different systems of integrodifferential equations which model a variety of kinetic processes are themselves modelled by an abstract operator equation on a Hilbert (or Banach) space.

Book excerpt: While Volume I (by W.A.J. Luxemburg and A.C. Zaanen, NHML Volume 1, 1971) is devoted to the algebraic aspects of the theory, this volume emphasizes the analytical theory of Riesz spaces and operators between these spaces. Though the numbering of chapters continues on from the first volume, this does not imply that everything covered in Volume I is required for this volume, however the two volumes are to some extent complementary.
