Book Sequenced Step Electrostatic Microactuator

Download or read book Sequenced Step Electrostatic Microactuator written by Saidapet Pachai Ramesh and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequenced Step Electrostatic MicroActuators (SSEMA's) are thin film membrane actuators that convert electrical energy into linear displacement. They are actuated in a sequenced stepwise manner using the effect of electrostatic forces acting between the thin films. They are fabricated using VLSI processing technologies. The SSEMA consists of 20 stages that are connected in series to increase the linear displacement for an applied voltage. The proof of concept, design considerations, mathematical modeling, processing and construction methods and experimental test results will be discussed in this thesis. SSEMAs will have immediate applications in engineering solutions to low-weight and high-efficiency actuator problems. Their possible applications in MicroRobotics and Fluid/Valve control will be investigated. The good results with the test structures indicate that the applications set if virtually unlimited in mechanical, optical and bio-medical systems.

Book Piezoelectric Actuators and Ultrasonic Motors

Download or read book Piezoelectric Actuators and Ultrasonic Motors written by Kenji Uchino and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-11-30 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable developments have taken place in the field of mechatronics in recent years. As symbolized by the "Janglish (Japanese English)" word, mechatronics, the technology and the social adaptation for introducing electronics into mechanics has been readily accepted in Japan. Currently robots are producing many products under computer control in Japanese factories, and supermarkets are utilizing automation systems for sample displays and sales. Further, the fast paced change in semiconductor chip technology has given rise to the need for micro-displacement positioning techniques. Actuators utilizing piezoelectridelectrostrictive effects are expected to meet these needs in mechanical components in the next micro mechatronic age. This book, in English, builds on my earlier publications concerned with ceramic actuators. The first edition titled "Essentials for Development and Applications of Piezoelectric Actuators" was published in 1984 through the Japan Industrial Technology Center. The second edition "PiezoelectriclElectrostrictive Actuators" published in Japanese through Morikita Pub. Co. (Tokyo) became one of the best sellers in that company in 1986, and was then translated into Korean. The problem solving edition "Piezoelectric Actuators -Problem Solving" was also published through Morikita, which was sold in conjunction with a 60 minute video tape to provide easy understanding.

Book Improved Thin Film Piezoelectrics for Actuator Applications

Download or read book Improved Thin Film Piezoelectrics for Actuator Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin film piezoelectrics for microelectromechanical systems offer large motions, often with low hysteresis, high available energy densities, as well as high sensitivity sensors with wide dynamic ranges, and low power requirements. Among ferroelectric films, the majority of the MEMS sensors and actuators developed have utilized lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films as the transducer. Randomly oriented PZT films show piezoelectric e31,f coefficients of about - 6 to 7 C/m2 at the morphotropic phase boundary. It has recently been suggested that these coefficients are suppressed by Zr/Ti compositional gradients within the films. Consequently, the goal of this exploratory program was to prepare PZT films with different levels of compositional uniformity via chemical solution deposition, and quantify the resulting dielectric and piezoelectric constants of the films. Four different solution methods were examined. It was determined that published methods for reducing compositional gradients in PZT films were not straightforward to reproduce. Significantly better piezoelectric coefficients were obtained by using {001} oriented PbTi03 buffer layers to prepare {001} oriented PZT films. The net result is that it was possible to double the e31,f coefficient to -12 C/m2. The resulting thin films will enable lower voltage MEMS actuators as well as improved sensor and energy harvesting systems.
