Book excerpt: From almost the time dentistry achieved a professional status, there has been a constant search to obtain a denture base material of life like appearance, one that would not deteriorate in service. The introduction and use of acrylic resin as a denture base material since 1937 has revolutionized the dentistry in a big way. Since then no other material has been found that matches the appearance of the oral soft tissues with as great fidelity as acrylic resin. Heat cured acrylic resins are the most commonly used materials for denture base processing. It has fine esthetic properties, excellent color stability and can be used with a simple technique for the construction of dentures. Inspite of having all these advantages, dimensional inaccuracies have been a critical component in assessing in vivo performances of these materials. These changes have profound effect on Complete Denture Occlusion. Even minor changes can lead to severe discrepancies. Dimensional inaccuracies is still a major challenge for the Prosthodontist which need to be corrected for better results. The aim of this study is to search for such a Denture Base material which shows minimal inaccuracies.

Book excerpt: The aims of this study are to modify heat cured acrylic resin denture base material into a flexible heat cured acrylic resin material by using additives {Flavoring agents and Plasticizer and to study some of it's physical and mechanical properties.One hundred sixty of heat cured samples and standard flexite have been prepared for studying some physical properties and tensile strength. The samples have been tested to measure (Tensile strength, Water sorption, Solubility, Color change, Dimensional accuracy). The results of this study have shown that the tensile strength of heat cured acrylic resin with additives was significantly lower than the standard heat cured acrylic resin while standard flexite group was significantly higher than standard heat cured acrylic resin. For dimensional accuracy, water sorption and solubility test, the group has shown significantly lower dimensional change, water sorption and solubility than other groups with additives but still higher than control group and flexite (valplast) one during seven days periods.For color change test there has been a change in color between groups that even cannot be considered.

Two types of heat cured acrylic resin materials were selected: Quayle–Dental and Major–base types. Seventy–two samples (30×20×1.5 mm) were prepared and divided into four experimental groups: Quayle–Dental and Major–base groups were cured by microwave technique and the others Quayle–Dental and Major–base groups were cured by water–bath technique. The number of samples for each group was 18. The colour property for the samples was evaluated using computerized ultra-violet–visible spectrophotometer with acc-uracy up to 0.001 nm. The absorbed light was measured which is also termed the optical density. The results of this study showed that there were no significant differences in optical density for acrylic resin samples cured by microwave and water–bath techniques, and the acrylic resin with smaller particle size (Quayle–Dental) showed higher optical density (colour property) than that of larger particle size (Major–base).
