Book excerpt: This consultation paper sets out the conclusions of an internal review by the Secretary of State of how probation services in England and Wales can be improved. The intention is to ensure probation services are better able to achieve the outcomes in justice that matter to victims and communities: protecting the public, reducing reoffending and ensuring that offenders are properly punished. The consultation paper sets out clear proposals to meet these aims. It is intended to take forward the vision set out by the Government in the green paper, 'Breaking the cycle: effective punishment, rehabilitation and sentencing of offenders' (Cm. 7972, ISBN 9780101797221) and is publishing simultaneously with the Consultation on effective community sentences (Cm. 8334, ISBN 9780101833424).

Book The Government s alcohol strategy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Great Britain: Home Office
  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2012-03-23
  • ISBN : 9780101833622
  • Pages : 36 pages

Download or read book The Government s alcohol strategy written by Great Britain: Home Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This strategy signals a radical change in the approach to irresponsible drinking and resultant criminal and anti-social behaviour and the increasing health problems created by the current levels of alcohol consumption. In 2012-11 there were nearly 1 million alcohol-related violent crimes and 1.2 million alcohol-related hospital admissions. The problem has developed because cheap alcohol is too readily available; increasing numbers of people drink at home before going on a night out ("pre-loading"); the Licensing Act failed to deliver a cafâ culture; too many places cater for people who drink to get drunk regardless of the consequences for themselves or others; and individuals who cause the problems have not been challenged enough over their behaviour. The availability of cheap alcohol will be curtailed through the introduction of a minimum unit price for alcohol. The exact level is to be agreed, but if it was 40p, it is estimated there would be 50,000 fewer crimes each year and 900 fewer alcohol-related deaths by the end of the decade. Consultations will also aim to end multi-buy promotions. Local areas and agencies will be given powers to challenge people's behaviour and make it easier to take action against, and even close down, problem premises. Other measures include early morning restriction orders and a late night levy so that businesses open late contribute to the costs of policing. The drinks industry has a crucial role to play in changing the drinking culture towards positive socialising. And the risks of excessive consumption will be widely circulated.

Book Folk Devils and Moral Panics

Download or read book Folk Devils and Moral Panics written by Stanley Cohen and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Richly documented and convincingly presented' -- New Society Mods and Rockers, skinheads, video nasties, designer drugs, bogus asylum seeks and hoodies. Every era has its own moral panics. It was Stanley Cohen's classic account, first published in the early 1970s and regularly revised, that brought the term 'moral panic' into widespread discussion. It is an outstanding investigation of the way in which the media and often those in a position of political power define a condition, or group, as a threat to societal values and interests. Fanned by screaming media headlines, Cohen brilliantly demonstrates how this leads to such groups being marginalised and vilified in the popular imagination, inhibiting rational debate about solutions to the social problems such groups represent. Furthermore, he argues that moral panics go even further by identifying the very fault lines of power in society. Full of sharp insight and analysis, Folk Devils and Moral Panics is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand this powerful and enduring phenomenon. Professor Stanley Cohen is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics. He received the Sellin-Glueck Award of the American Society of Criminology (1985) and is on the Board of the International Council on Human Rights. He is a member of the British Academy.

Download or read book Transforming Rehabilitation written by Great Britain: Ministry of Justice and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report sets out the most significant reforms to tackling re-offending and managing offenders in the community for a generation. Consistently high re-offending rates have led to the radical overhaul with almost half of all prison-leavers reoffending within 12 months - for those serving less than a year that figure rises to almost 58 per cent. For the first time all offenders, including those serving less than 12 months, will be subject to mandatory supervision and tailored rehabilitation on release from prison. Further plans include: a greater use of mentors to meet offenders at the prison gate and support them in the community; only paying in full for services that are proven to work at reducing re-offending; and opening up rehabilitation services to a much wider range of providers, who are free to innovate and do the things that work to turn offenders' lives around. What we do at the moment is send people out of prison with £46 in their pocket, and no support at all. The proposals will see all of those sentenced to prison or probation properly punished while being helped to turn away from crime for good. They will also mean taxpayers' money is only spent on what works when it comes to cutting crime. These proposals build on a consultation from last year which set out plans to open up rehabilitation services to the private and voluntary sector to drive innovation through the criminal justice system and increase the use of Payment by Results

Book The Power Threat Meaning Framework

Download or read book The Power Threat Meaning Framework written by Lucy Johnstone and published by BPS Books. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power Threat Meaning Framework is a new perspective on why people sometimes experience a whole range of forms of distress, confusion, fear, despair, and troubled or troubling behaviour. It is an alternative to the more traditional models based on psychiatric diagnosis. It was co-produced with service users and applies not just to people who have been in contact with the mental health or criminal justice systems, but to all of us. The Framework summarises and integrates a great deal of evidence about the role of various kinds of power in people's lives; the kinds of threat that misuses of power pose to us; and the ways we have learned as human beings to respond to threat. In traditional mental health practice, these threat responses are sometimes called 'symptoms'. The Framework also looks at how we make sense of these difficult experiences, and how messages from wider society can increase our feelings of shame, self-blame, isolation, fear and guilt. The main aspects of the Framework are summarised in these questions, which can apply to individuals, families or social groups: 'What has happened to you?' (How is Power operating in your life?) 'How did it affect you?' (What kind of Threats does this pose?) 'What sense did you make of it?' (What is the Meaning of these situations and experiences to you?) 'What did you have to do to survive?' (What kinds of Threat Response are you using?) In addition, the two questions below help us to think about what skills and resources people might have, and how we might pull all these ideas and responses together into a personal narrative or story: 'What are your strengths?' (What access to Power resources do you have?) 'What is your story?' (How does all this fit together?)
