Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The President's Words: A Selection of Passages From the Speeches, Addresses, and Letters of Abraham Lincoln The funeral service of the lgth of April, 1865, was the most impressive religious service ever held in this country. By one impulse, the people of the land thronged the churches, which, at the hour of the funeral of the President, were everywhere open. At that hour, more people in this land united in the public worship of God, than ever united in such service on any day before. In Massachusetts, the day has been historical for nearly two centuries. It is now marked by one more association, which will remain in memory till the young children of this generation have grown old and passed away. Download or read book The Words of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Abraham Lincoln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Words of Abraham Lincoln One who appreciates the Gettysburg address and the two inaugurals is not content unless he can go further. There is much in Lincoln's writings of the highest literary quality. There is much more that justifies the student of American history in continuing his study of Lincoln. In the prepara tion of this collection the editor has had in mind the chief value which it should possess for the reader. That value is to be found in the revelation which his writings give of the personality of one of the greatest public characters in all history. So those speeches and letters have been chosen which reveal the most of the man, Lincoln. With this in view, the notes are meant to explain the man and the occa sion, and with the letters give such information as will enable the reader to understand better why the letters were written and who Lincoln's correspondents were. The few obvious errors in grammatical or rhetorical form are not noted. The split infinitive is one of Lincoln's com monest failings, but the critical student can find better use for his time than in hunting for faults. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wit and Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln: As Reflected in His Briefer Letters and Speeches In the following pages an attempt has been made to collect, for the first time, Lincoln's masterpieces of brevity; the brevity which was not only the soul of his Wit, but the sinew of his strength and the heart of his compassion. Lincoln, said the London Spectator, could never tolerate the tyranny of mere words, but always pressed through them to the reality beyond. When Lincoln Spoke he was an orator, never an elocutionist. Said Robert G. Ingersoll, in drawing this distinction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: Early Speeches, Springfield Speech, Cooper Union Speech, Inaugural Addresses, Gettysburg Address, Selected Letters, Lincoln's Lost Speech The selections included in this volume are designed to illustrate the steady development of Lincoln's literary power. They begin with a few specimens of his earlier style, which was direct, forceful, and manly, but not markedly better than that of many of his contemporaries. The famous Lost Speech of May 29, 1856, has been reprinted in the Appendix. As it does not present Lincoln's exact language throughout, it could scarcely be placed with the other selections, but its personal and historical interest is so great that lovers of Lincoln will be glad to have it preserved in convenient form. Book The Opinions of Abraham Lincoln Upon Slavery and Its Issues

Download or read book The Opinions of Abraham Lincoln Upon Slavery and Its Issues written by Abraham Lincoln and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opinions of Abraham Lincoln Upon Slavery and Its Issues: Indicated by His Speeches, Letters, Messages, and Proclamations I believe it has endured, because during all that time, until the introduction of the Nebraska bill, the public mind did rest all time in the belief that slavery was in the course of ultimate extinction. That was what give us the rest that we had through that period of eighty-two years; at least so I believe. I Have Always Hated Slavery, I Think, As Much As Any Abolitionist. Slavery a Vast Moral Evil. From the same. The American people look upon slavery as a vast moral evil; they can prove it such by the writings of those who gave us the blessings of liberty which we enjoy; and that they so looked upon it, and not as an evil merely confining itself to the States where it is situated. The Infallibility of the Dred Scott Decision Questioned. From the same. I have never heard of such a thing [the sacredness of the Dred Scott decision.] Why, decisions apparently contrary to that decision have been made by that very court before. It is the first of its kind; it is an astonisher in legal history. It is a new wonder of the world. It is based upon falsehood in the main as to the facts. Allegations of facts, upon which it stands, are not facts at all, in many instances. And no decision made on any question - the first instance of a decision made under so many unfavorable circumstances - thus placed, has ever been held by the profession as law, and it has always needed confirmation before the lawyers regarded it as settled law. The Manner in which the White and Black Races can do each other most good. From the same. I protest, now and forever, against that counterfeit logic which presumes that because I did not want a negro woman for a slave, I do necessarily want her for a wife. My understanding is that I need not have her for either, but, as God made us separate, we can leave one another alone, and do one another much good thereby. There are white men enough to marry all the white women, and enough black men to marry all the black women; and, in God's name, let them be so married. The Declaration of Independence our Bond of Union with all mankind. From the same. In every way we are better men in the age, and race, and country in which we live, for these Fourth of July celebrations. But after we have done all this, we have not yet reached the whole. There is something else connected with it. We have, besides these, men - descended by blood from our ancestors - among us, perhaps half our people, who are not descendants at all of these men; they are men who have come from Europe - German, Irish, French, and Scandinavian - men that have come from Europe themselves, or whose ancestors have come hither and settled here, finding themselves our equals in all things. If they look back through this history, to trace their connection with those days by blood, they find they have none; they cannot carry themselves back into that glorious epoch and make themselves feel that they are part of us, but when they look through that old Declaration of Independence, they find that those old men say that "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal;" and then they feel that that moral sentiment, taught in that day, evidences their relation to those men; that it is the father of all moral principle in them, and that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh, of the men who wrote that Declaration - and so they are. That is the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, and will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world. The assumption that Slavery is right does not stop with one race. From the same. Turn in whate
