Download or read book Lincoln and His Generals Classic Reprint written by Clarence Edward Macartney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and His Generals The visitor to Philadelphia's beautiful Fairmount Park will see on a hill overlooking the Schuylkill River a plain board shanty with the United States flag flying over it. It is the cabin used as head quarters by Grant at City Point on the James River, in 1864 and 1865. In that room the orders were written which directed the far flung armies of the nation in the last year of the Civil War. As one passes the cabin it is not difficult to see, in imagination, some of the chief military and political actors of the great drama: the severe and scholarly Meade, the dynamic Sheridan, the 'superb' Han cock, the thoughtful Warren, the big and manly Burnside, the restless Sherman, with the fire of genius burning in his eyes, the capable Porter, Grant smoking a cigar, a hand thrust into his pocket, and Lincoln with his high silk hat and frock coat, and melancholy countenance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Servant of the People You will recall that during the dark days of the Civil War Lincoln's attention was called to certain records. These records seemed to indicate that one Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston was the mother of five boys who had enlisted in the serv ice of their country and all of whom had been killed in battle. This information so stirred the tender heart of Lincoln that he wrote to Mrs. Bixby one of the most sympathetic letters ever written. 80 beautiful was this letter that it has become known thruout the world as a gem of literature. It was to this letter which Dr. Barton referred when he said Lincoln had blundered, for by his investigation he disclosed that only four of Mrs. Bixby's sons had served their coun try; that two of these had died in battle and that one of the other two sons had deserted to the enemy. He proved conclusively that two sons, one of whom had not been in the service, lived in Massachusetts for many years after the close of the war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and Men of War Times When I first saw the light of day there was not a single steamship on any of the seas of the world; there was not a train of cars drawn by a locomotive; the magnetic telegraph was not even noted in the wildest of dreams; there was not a single State west of the Father of Waters with the exception of Missouri and part of Louisiana; the great Northwest, now [1902] presenting an unbroken galaxy of mighty and pros perous commonwealths, was then an unexplored wilderness, and a large portion of the Western country now possessing a thriving population and clothed with Statehood, appeared on our school atlas as the Great American Desert. The boundless wealth of the Rocky Mountains was unknown, even to the dusky sons of the forest, who peopled that region from pre historic times, and the now rich slopes of the Pacific, with itsgolden gate, had only a straggling semi-barbaric race. Ohio was known as the 'backwoods, ' where the sturdy pioneers: were yet struggling with the Indians, and ordinary letter postage between the East and the remote regions of the Buck eye State was cents. All members were present, although Blair came in late. Carpenter continues Lincoln's words: I said to the Cabinet that I had resolved upon this step, and had not called them together to ask their advice, but to lay the subject-matter of a proclamation before them; suggestions as to which would be in order, after they had heard it read. Various suggestions were offered. Nothing, however, was offered that I had not already fully anticipated and settled in my own mind, until Secretary Seward spoke. He said in substance: Mr. President, I approve of the proclamation, but I question the expediency of its issue at this juncture. It may be viewed as the last measure of an exhausted government, a cry for help; the government stretching forth its hands to Ethiopia, instead of Ethiopia stretch ing forth her hands to the government.
