Three score of these photographs, masks, busts and portraits are here reproduced with such measure of comment and description as each item seems to demand. From the daguerreotype taken at Springfield in 1846, the earliest likeness of Lincoln that has been spared us, down to the photograph for which he sat at Washington on Palm Sunday in 1865, a few days before his death, the plates assembled in this volume, ranging from the hopeful confidence of their subjects early manhood to the tempered and sober self-mastery of his last days, clearly reflect the mental and spiritual development through eventful years of the greatest man of his period and country. One rises from a study of them with new and reverent knowledge of the life and growth which have made Abraham Lincoln's mem ory a part of the proud and precious heritage of every American. Book The Real Lincoln

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Lincoln: A Portrait Not long after the appearance of Herndon's Life of Lincoln, in the preparation of which I collaborated with the author, I was asked by the late Leonard Swett to visit him when I next came to Chicago. In due time I complied with the invitation. It was not long after I had called until our conversation turned on the Life of Lincoln which was then undergoing the test of popular approval. It was soon apparent that Mr. Swett greatly admired Herndon and he was generous and complimentary in his allusions to the book; but while he expressed the belief that Herndon, of all persons who had attempted to narrate the story of Lincolns life, was best qualified to tell all the truth and had religiously tried to do so, yet he felt that in some respects, due probably to his advanced age, he had fallen short of his full task. Mr. Swett intimated that he had talked to certain other friends, to whom he purposed sending me, who knew Lincoln personally, and they coincided with his view. He mentioned Joseph Medill, Horace White, Henry C.Whitney, Leonard W. Volk, the sculptor, and Alexander Hesler, the photographer, all of whom I interviewed. In addition he took me to see Lyman Trumbull, and I listened with deep interest to their recollections of Lincoln and Herndon. Regarding the need, in view of his unusual opportunities, of fuller revelations from Herndon, Swett and Trumbull agreed with each other, but in certain other respects, notably their estimate of Lincoln, they were not in complete accord. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2 of 2: A New Portrait I had hardly begun the study of Abraham Lincoln when I found periods of his life entirely unaccounted for among the documents published in the standard editions of his works. I found a great many lapses, omissions of comment on questions of momentous import, questions which I felt he must have considered, and about which he must have spoken. Every new discovery began to fill these gaps and explained his conduct in certain situations, and made futile any charge that he was at any time silent on the important questions of the hour. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 of 2 written by Emanuel Hertz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 of 2: A New Portrait While Lincoln lived, the United States of today was a nation very much in the making. It was in the making not only politically and economically but intellectually and morally as well. It was a people trying to find itself under conditions of greatest novelty and unexampled diversity. Political and social institutions, which had been fairly well tested for a reasonable length of time within closely defined and relatively homogeneous areas, were now to be set to work under conditions of greatest diversity both social and economic. A federal union was to be built and preserved under conditions which often seemed to make either the building or the preservation beyond the practical powers of man. Nevertheless, the Westward movement of the pioneer families and groups, the Ordinance of 1784 and that of 1787 for the government of the Northwest Territory, the Louisiana Purchase, the acquisition of Florida, the Ashburton Treaty, the Oregon treaty of 1846, and the results of the Mexican War all followed relentlessly one after the other, and moved steadily toward the accomplishment and perpetuity of one great aim. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait Life of Lincoln: Life of Abraham Lincoln, the Greatest American There is not one who reads these lines who was born in humbler circumstances than Abraham Lincoln; not one whose opportunities in life are so limited as those which surrounded him; and yet he became one of the greatest of men. His life proves to all generations the power of an indomitable will and a resolute purpose; that man, when he conquers him self, can conquer the world. Do you remember that old homestead where you were born? It was a mansion compared with that rough log cabin in the Kentucky wilderness where Abraham Lincoln began life on that cold winter day on the twelfth of February, in 1809. Do you remember the dear old village where you spent your child hood days; its long country roads, shaded with towering maples and elms, along which you romped and shouted and played on your way to school those good old days in the country? It was a, great world of light and laughter, of pleasure and friendship, of wonderful Opportunities, compared with that forest home of Abraham Lincoln where only the growl of the bear echoed along the trail, where the ring Of the ax was the only sound of civilization, and desolation and poverty were his only friends - and they were staunch friends. Every American is rich today in comparison with the worldly posses sions of Abraham Lincoln during his childhood, his youth, and his early manhood - rich in surroundings of home; rich in the comforts of life; rich in the opportunities for learning and education. There is not an American youth who is not a millionaire In the possibilities of vast success in life, compared to the possibilities that were within the grasp of Abraham Lincoln on the day that he left his father's roof to go out into the great world, of which he knew only the knowledge that comes from the school of the woods and the motherhood of Nature. There was one thing that he did not know and never learned - and that was Fear. He learned early that man is his own master; that with a strong arm, a strong heart, and a strong will, there is no power on earth that he need fear; that with his conscience clear and his mind clean the future will take care of itself and even Death is conquered. Book Washington and Lincoln Portraits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Washington and Lincoln Portraits Classic Reprint written by Winfred Porter Truesdell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington and Lincoln Portraits So far as it can be true that any one man ever did win a war, George Washington won the Revolution single-handed. He did not so much lead the Ameri can people, as drag them after him to a victory and an independence which they had not entirely made up their minds to seek. Washington was born as he thought to poverty, trained himself to make his own way in the world, and when he unexpectedly in herited a great fortune found himself well fitted to make the best use of it. To years of hard labor and outdoor life, he owed his vigorous constitution and physical endurance; his Indian campaigns and ser vice under Braddock made him the Only man in the colonies with any considerable actual experience in military matters and the only man acquainted with the effect upon British troops of the conditions under which a war would have to be fought here. He knew from experience the hopelessness of conducting a wilderness campaign upon the European model, and he never forgot it. The final victory in the Revolu tion we owe to his keen use of the topography of the country to create an impregnable defense. He was one of those rare men who loom gigantic before the eyes of their contemporaries. Somehow he possessed that rarer thing than genius, more intangible than magnetism, a superlative sanity and probity. Scarce ly a dozen men have ever possessed m all history the confidence of a great body of men to the degree he did. Their willingness to follow him without asking explanations or expecting comprehension of the reasons is one of the decisive factors in the movements of the time. His personal influence kept an army in the field during the war, held the jarring statesmen together till the Constitution was formed, and then set the new government on its feet. One cannot con-celve of the Revolution without him. He is in the truest sense the father of the present' nation. Had colonial America never developed into the United States, it would still be famous in history because it had produced such a man as Washington. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artists of Abraham Lincoln Portraits: David Gilmour Blythe I have been cudgeling my brains over the lithograph you sent of Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. It certainly can be interpreted in several different ways. However, I interpret it as an attempt to show the various forces being brought to bear on the President, and the difficulty of his decision. I believe the artist has attempted to include a great deal of symbolism such as in the key, scales, flag at the window and various impedimenta. If it has a slant, I would think it a mildly critical one. But to me the artist has some recognition of the difficulty Lincoln had in composing the proclamation. Many of the items portrayed may well have entered Lincoln's thoughts. The weight of the decision is present.
