Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln in Illinois Sangamon, and remembered well that no one dreamed of inviting him to the ball that had celebrated that event. Springfield, one might say, was permeated with the spirit of Lincoln. The house where I went to school with other little Springfield girls was the house in which he had been married. The desk in a corridor of the chief hotel, upon which we did not hesitate to perch at class dances, had been Lincoln's. The house where Lincoln had lived, and where his children had been born, was Open to the public. One took country cousins to see its interior. The monu ment where he slept dominated the cemetery. The bristling groups of bronze soldiers at the four corners of the shaft were of endless interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Abraham Lincoln Miss Ann Rutledge New Salem Pioneering and the Poem

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln Miss Ann Rutledge New Salem Pioneering and the Poem written by William Henry Herndon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Miss. Ann Rutledge, New Salem, Pioneering and the Poem: A Lecture Delivered in the Old Sangamon Country Court House, November, 1866 William H. Herndon had curiously announced his lecture for the evening of November 16, 1866, as on Abraham Lincoln, Miss Ann Rutledge, New Salem, Pioneering, and the Poem Yet that strange title attracted only a meagre group of people to the Court House in Springfield, Illinois, to hear him interpret their friend and his late law partner, the Martyred President. He had lectured on Lincoln thrice before, and it's likely that some who heard all four lectures asked themselves in wonder what was Billy Herndon driving at? Actually this was a trial flight for the biography he purposed. Cer tainly none had opportunity to know Abraham Lin coln better, and since that sorrowful day when the body of their neighbor had lain in state in the Illi nois state house, Herndon had been visited by many an ambitious writer seeking to levy on his store of facts and memories. That had been a disillusioning experience. Already he could perceive the folk spirit of a people busy making its herointo a demi god. He could not recognize the Lincoln whom he knew in what resulted. With a friend he made his way back to Sangamon county on foot and by canoe, for his horse had been lost in service. These are the brief facts of Lincoln's only service in the armed forces of the United States, except when he commanded the armies and navy of the United States in the Civil war.He looked deep into the heart of the American volunteer in those three brief months of service from April to July 1832. He learned their thoughts, learned their habits, learned to command them, learned to work and march and fight with them, these men who have always been the backbone of American armed forces. The knowledge was priceless when it came to commanding hundreds of thousands of the sons and grandsons of these same types of volunteers in the Civil war.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story of Lincoln Nearly three hundred years ago a Dutch ship sailed up the river to Jamestown bearing a strange cargo. The cargo was twenty negroes, and the were sold as slaves to the colonists. This was the way in which negro slavery began in this country. The buying and selling of men and making them serve their masters without pay went on for many years. As the United States grew larger this traffic in men grew until at last people began to be afraid slavery would spread over all the country. At first only a few people thought slavery was wrong. These talked and wrote about it until more and more people joined them in this belief. The quarrel grew and grew and waged fiercely between the people who believed in slavery and those who did not. Then at last this country was plunged into a cruel war. The Northern people who wished to put an end to slavery fought against the Southern people who owned the slaves. This war lasted several years. Many brave men died and many precious lives were lost that the negro might be free. The man who did more than any other to free the slaves and keep this country as one nation was Abraham Lincoln. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Lincoln As the close of day was fast approaching, the weird appearance of the atmosphere was still more wonderful, and as owl light set in we safely arrived in Springfield. Next day at a timely hour, armed with letters of introduction given us by Governor Chase, Hon. Thomas Ewing, and others, we presented ourselves at Lincoln's office, then located in the State Capitol of Illinois. Although surrounded by a few political friends he received us kindly, and it was rather flattering to our vanity, however, for he seemed to know us by intuition. As he was a prompt man, he lost no time in proceeding to business, and inquired how I made my busts. I gave him a brief description of my process.
