Download or read book Herndon s Life of Lincoln written by William Henry Herndon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herndon's Life of Lincoln: The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln A quarter OF A century has well-nigh rolled BY since the tragic death of Abraham Lincoln. The prejudice and bitterness with which he was assailed have disappeared from the minds of men, and the world is now beginning to view him as a great historical character. Those who knew and walked with him are gradually passing away, and ere long the last man who ever heard his voice or grasped his hand will have gone from earth. With a View to throwing a light on some attributes of Lincoln's char acter heretofore obscure, and thus contributing to the great fund of history which goes down to posterity, these vol umes are given to the world. If Mr. Lincoln is destined to fill that exalted station in history or attain that high rank in the estimation of the coming generations which has been predicted of him, it is alike just to his memory and the proper legacy of man kind that the whole truth concerning him should be known. If the story of his life is truthfully and courageously told - nothing colored or suppressed; nothing false either written or suggested - the reader will see and feel the presence of the living man. He will, in fact, live with him and be moved to think and act with him. If, on the other hand, the story is colored or the facts in any degree suppressed, the reader will be not only misled, but im posed upon as well. At last the truth will come, and no man need hope to evade it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Herndon relates that he read Rollin's Ancient History and Gibbon's Rome, but that he did not greatly enjoy history. I have several volumes once owned by him, and bearing the firm name of Lincoln and Herndon in his writing, one of them being Ancient and Modern History by J. E. Worcester. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Herndon's Lincoln, Vol. 1: The True Story of a Great Life; The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln Some persons will doubtless object to the narra tion of certain facts which appear here for the first time, and which they contend should have been consigned to the tomb. Their pretense is that no good can come from such ghastly exposures. To such over-sensitive souls, if any such exist, my answer is that these facts are indispensable to a full knowledge of Mr. Lincoln in all the walks of life. In order properly to comprehend him and the stir ring, bloody times in which he lived, and in which he played such an important part, we must have all the facts - we must be prepared to take him as he was. Book The Real Life of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book The Real Life of Abraham Lincoln written by George Alfred Townsend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Life of Abraham Lincoln: A Talk With Mr. Herndon, His Late Law Partner He has given me permission to write what I choose of himself and his dead friend, and among all the men I have ever met he is the readiest to understand a question and to give even and direct answers. He resembles Mr. Lincoln so much, and in his present quarters, garb, and worldly condition, is so nearly a reproduction of A. Lincoln, law yer, as he lived before Fame drove a chariot through this second story, that we may as well take a turn around the surviving man and the room. Lincoln was the taller and older, and the senior partner; he had been in two or three associations with lawyers one of his early partners, by fraud or mismanagement, got him into debt, and he car ried the burden of it about ten years; his latest partner, excepting Herndon, was anxious to be a candidate for the Legislature, and as Mr. Lincoln desired the same honor at the same time, a dissolution was inevitable, and then to'herndon's great surprise, for he was very young and obscure, Lincoln said: Billy, let us go into business to gether. Herndon accepted the proposition thankfully. Mr. Lincoln arranged the terms of partnership, and the new shingle went up directly, never to be removed till the bullet of Booth had done its errand. How young Herndon might have looked twenty-five years ago We can scarcely infer from the saffron-faced, blue-black haired man before us, bearded bushily at the throat, disposed to shut one eye for accuracy in conversation, his teeth discolored by tobacco, and over his angular features, which suggest Mr. Lincoln's in ampleness and shape, the same half-tender melancholy, the result in both cases, perhaps, Of hard frontier work, poor pay, thoughtful abstraction, and a disposition to share the sorrows of mankind. Book The Religion of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book The Religion of Abraham Lincoln written by Judd Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Abraham Lincoln: Being a Reprint of the Lecture of Rev. Jas; A. Reed in 1872, and the Answering Lecture of W. H. Herndon in 1873 When a great man dies his biographers and eulogists usually begin to iron out the wrinkles of ruggedness in his life; his virtues are enlarged upon and his shortcomings minimized until finally the real man is oblit erated and in his stead a figure free from the traits of ordinary manhood is presented for the contemplation of future generations. This was true in the case of Washington, and is, to some extent, becoming so in the case of Abraham Lincoln. It is proper, therefore, to treasure up and preserve what is written about him by his associates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
