Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln Back Home: Two Episodes in the Career of the Great Civil War President Mirrored in the Daily Kentucky Press, 1860-1865 One need not delve deeply into the great body of Lincolniana, now easily available to the gen! Eral reader, to find excerpts of one kind or an other from the Kentucky press pertaining to America's Civil War President and. Martyr. But so scattered and unrelated are these fragmental reprintings of news and editorial opinion that one would scarcely believe them to be parts of a rather complete story of Lincoln's last years, particularly as his acts and utterances affected the people back home in his native State, Ken tucky. Yet such is the case and the composite narrative thus developed is the more interesting because of the frequently contrasting, if not diametrically opposing views of Kentucky's contemporary political leaders. Book Lincoln and Episodes of the Civil War

Download or read book Lincoln and Episodes of the Civil War written by William E. Doster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and Episodes of the Civil War During the writer's service in the field and in garrison, he jotted down, on the reverse side of field maps and on loose sheets of paper, memoranda of his experiences, and at the end of the war (1865-66) wrote out these memoranda substantially in the form in which they now appear. In the period between the close of the war and 1909, the writer was too much occupied in professional and other labors to give attention to the publication of these recollections and they remained untouched, in manuscript. During 1909, however, many requests came to him from all parts of the country for copies of an address on Abraham Lincoln which the writer had delivered in that year before Lehigh University, South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The suggestion was also repeatedly made that he write out and publish, for preservation in permanent form, not only that address, but any other recollections that he might have about the war, including particularly those associated with the Old Capitol Prison and the conspiracy trial, topics alluded to in that address. Look ye at Abraham Lincoln now afloat Upon the little craft caller River Queen, Whose keel runs kissing the Potomac's ripples For miles and miles in tender undertone Attuned to the bright joys of loving Spring, Which thrill his spouse, the Earth, to glad creation After the winter's barren godlessness. On either side of the enraptured boat The lounging banks stretch out sunning themselves In overflow of vernal ecstacy That breathes the season's subtle harmonies Of greening fields and open-hearted hills Bedight with peeping eyelets flowery, And the fleet play of Nature's iridescence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Divided: The Story of Lincoln and the Civil War When Abraham was four years old, the family moved to another farm in Kentucky, about ten miles distant. Life in the Kentucky wilderness was harsh and severe. When game was plentiful, the family ate freely of grouse, turkey, bear, and deer. When it was scarce the family board consisted mainly of corn meal and potatoes. The members of the Lincoln household toiled long and hard from dawn until sunset. Even little Abe had his regular chores to perform each day - carrying water, filling the wood box, pick ing wild berries and grapes, and riding the horse when his father plowed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln and the Coming of the Civil War: Edited With an Introduction Four possible courses of action were available to the president-elect. One possibility was to lend his sup port to the efforts to work out a compro mise on the territorial question. This course was urged by Northern leaders who believed an effective compromise on the territorial question would keep the Southern States in the union on a voluntary basis. They argued that such a compromise sacrificed nothing material as slavery could not be profitably ex tended into territories unsuited to cotton growing.
