Book The Conquest of a Continent

Download or read book The Conquest of a Continent written by W. Bruce Lincoln and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Conquest of a Continent, the historian W. Bruce Lincoln details Siberia's role in Russian history, one remarkably similar to that of the frontier in the development of the United States.... It is a big, panoramic book, in keeping with the immensity of its subject."--Chicago Tribune"Lincoln is a compelling writer whose chapters are colorful snapshots of Siberia's past and present.... The Conquest of a Continent is a vivid narrative that will inform and entertain the broader reading public."--American Historical Review"This story includes Genghis Khan, who sent the Mongols warring into Russia; Ivan the Terrible, who conquered Siberia for Russia; Peter the Great, who supported scientific expeditions and mining enterprises; and Mikhail Gorbachev, whose glasnost policy prompted a new sense of 'Siberian' nationalism. It is also the story of millions of souls who themselves were conquered by Siberia.... Vast riches and great misery, often intertwined, mark this region."--The Wall Street JournalStretching from the Urals to the Arctic Ocean to China, Siberia is so vast that the continental United States and Western Europe could be fitted into its borders, with land to spare. Yet, in only six decades, Russian trappers, cossacks, and adventurers crossed this huge territory, beginning in the 1580s a process of conquest that continues to this day. As rich in resources as it was large in size, Siberia brought the Russians a sixth of the world's gold and silver, a fifth of its platinum, a third of its iron, and a quarter of its timber. The conquest of Siberia allowed Russia to build the modern world's largest empire, and Siberia's vast natural wealth continues to play a vital part in determining Russia's place in international affairs.Bleak yet romantic, Siberia's history comes to life in W. Bruce Lincoln's epic telling. The Conquest of a Continent, first published in 1993, stands as the most comprehensive and vivid account of the Russians in Siberia, from their first victories over the Mongol Khans to the environmental degradation of the twentieth century. Dynasties of incomparable wealth, such as the Stroganovs, figure into the story, as do explorers, natives, gold seekers, and the thousands of men and women sentenced to penal servitude or forced labor in Russia's great wilderness prisonhouse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the week of March, 1939 when Edsel Ford motored to Palm Beach, Florida for his winter vacation, The Lincoln Continental has continued to be an icon of American style and grace; it is a concept, not just a car. It is a statement and not just a form of luxurious transportation. Although this first example, based on the chassis and proprietary body of the Lincoln Zephyr of 1938-9 was named Mark I by the public, it actually never carried that moniker through its initial production in 1942, interrupted by World War II, and resurrected in 1945-8. But by 1956 the Ford Motor Company essentially acknowledged the public's assignment when the Continental Mark II appeared in the late fall of 1955 for model year 1956. The Mark II, which had a production run of only two years and put little or no money back in Ford's treasury, nevertheless set a standard from the family of Lincoln which was to prevail to the present day. After the Mark II, more Marks appeared in succession, with some later admitted jumbling by Ford of the logical descendency of numbers, until the government became proactive in dictating what manufacturer's total fleet must meet in terms of miles per gallon (CAFE). It was at this time that the Mark VI entered the market as a new from-the-ground Lincoln--every inch a Continental, even more luxurious than its predecessor, and coming down the fashion runway after a diet of over 800 pounds. The fact that Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division was able to effect this change without losing any of the Mark's styling cues is a story that has often been overlooked--and one that rarely has been mentioned in print. This book is conceived to bring a new understanding of this remarkable series which ran from the 1980 to the 1983 model year and in the guise of the Town Car (which took on more and more of the Mark VI's equipage) through 1989. Here is the story, presented pictorially, in researched text and intended as a framework which will allow the intriguing history of the Lincoln Continental Mark VI to be told with increasing detail, data and photographic evidence. The author, an interior designer for over forty-years, presents this book from his perspective deeply rooted in color, shape and form--important elements of both interior and automotive design.

This book was released on 2000-09-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To revive the ailing Lincoln-Mercury division the restyled 1961 Continental was a massive success. The styling was so liked that it remained basically unchanged until the new range was introduced in the 1970s. Initially available as a thin-pillar four-door sedan or convertible it also came as a two-door hardtop in 1966. Early models had a 430ci V8 which was upgraded 462ci in 1966. The body was very rigid with top quality protection against rust. These factors were reflected in strong sales. This is a book of contemporary road tests, technical and specification data, new model intro's, driver's reports, history, long term tests.

Excerpt: The Lincoln Continental was an automobile produced by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company from 1939 to 1948 and again from 1956 to 2002. Despite often sharing underpinnings with less-expensive Fords in more recent years, the Lincoln Continental had usually been a distinctively platformed and styled, highly equipped luxury car in the course of its long history. The flagship Lincoln model during most of its run, the Continental name conveyed special cachet in the product line. During the 1980s, the Continental was downsized from a full-size to a mid-size Ford Taurus platform; this introduced the Continental to a wider range of competition from Europe and Japan. After the Continental was discontinued in 2002, it was largely replaced by the Lincoln LS V8. contemporaneous image of 1942 Lincoln Continental coupe 1948 Lincoln Continental convertibleThe first Lincoln Continental was developed as Edsel Ford's one-off personal vehicle, though it is believed he planned all along to put the model into production if successful. In 1938, he commissioned a custom design from the chief stylist, Eugene T. "Bob" Gregorie, ready for Edsel's March 1939 vacation. The design, allegedly sketched out in an hour by...
