Book excerpt: We present a measurement of D[sup 0]-[bar D][sup 0] mixing parameters using the ratios of lifetimes extracted from samples of D[sup 0] mesons decaying to K[sup -][pi][sup+], K[sup -]K[sup+], and[pi][sup -][pi][sup+]. Using 91 fb[sup -1] of data collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory, we obtain a value Y= (0.8[+-] 0.4(stat.)[sub -0.4][sup+0.5](syst.))%, which, in the limit of CP conservation, corresponds to the mixing parameter y=[Delta][Lambda]/2[Lambda]. Using the difference in lifetimes of D[sup 0] and[bar D][sup 0] mesons, we obtain the CP-violation parameter[Delta][Lambda]= ( -0.8[+-] 0.6(stat.)[+-] 0.2(syst.))%.

Book excerpt: The authors present preliminary results of a search for direct CP violation in D{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -} {pi}{sup +} decays using 87 fb{sup -1} of data acquired by the Babar experiment running on and near the {Upsilon}(4S) from 1999-2002. The authors report the asymmetries in the signal mode and in the main resonant subchannels. Based on the same dataset, they also report a new 90% CL upper limit of 0.0042 on the rate of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing using the decay modes D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}, D{sup 0} {yields} [K/K*]ev (+c.c.).

Book excerpt: The authors present a measurement of D°-{bar D}° mixing parameters using the ratios of lifetimes extracted from a sample of D° mesons produced through the process D* → D°?+, that decay to K−?+, I−K+, or?−?+. the Cabibbo-suppressed modes K−K+ and?−?+ are compared to the Cabibbo-favored mode K−?+ to obtain a measurement of ycp, which in the limit of CP conservation corresponds to the mixing parameter y. The analysis is based on a data sample of 384 fb−1 collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. They obtain ycp = [1.24 ± 0.39(stat) ± 0.13(syst)]%, which is evidence of D°-{bar D}° mixing at the 3? level, and?Y = [-0.26 ± 0.36(stat) ± 0.08(syst)]%, where?Y constrains possible CP violation. Combining this result with a previous BABAR measurement of ycp obtained from a separate sample of D° → K−K+ events, they obtain ycp = [1.03 ± 0.33(stat) ± 0.19(syst)]%.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we present the measurement of D0 - $\bar{D}$0 mixing parameter yCP using the full BABAR data sample. We also searched for CP violation in the D0 → K+K-, [pi]+[pi]- channels, finding the parameter [Delta]Y compatible with zero. In Chapter 1, we briefly review the SM and introduce the theoretical framework of neutral meson mixing and CP violation. The BABAR detector and the performance of each sub-detector are described in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, we present an overview of the analysis including a brief description of the previous similar BABAR analyses and the expected improvements in the present analysis. The candidate reconstruction and selection are described in Chapter 4, together with the optimization of the signal region. The signal and background event classes are described in Chapter 5, where we also provide the probability density functions used to extract the mixing and CP violating parameter. In Chapter 6 we describe the various crosschecks performed to validate the analysis and the evaluation of the systematic error. Finally in Chapter 7 we present the final results and their interpretation.

From a sample of 234 events we find a branching ratio of [Lambda](D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup +][pi][sup -])/[Lambda](D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup -][pi][sup +]) = (0.430[sub -0.061][sup +0.062] [+-] 0.031)% under the assumption of no mixing and no CP violation. These results include a measurement of D0 - anti D0 mixing and searches for CP violation in two-body D0 decays, a search for CP violation in the charm decays D" 2!KS0K " and D s" 2!KS0K", KS0[pi]", and a search for direct CP violation in the singly-Cabibbo suppressed D" 2!K+K-[pi]"decays. These studies are based on the fi nal dataset collected by BABAR at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC in the period 1999-2008. No evidence of CP violation is found in these charm decays. The measured mixing parameter yCP = [0.72 " 0.18(stat) " 0.12(syst)]% excludes the no-mixing null hypothesis with a signifi cance of 3.3[sigma].
