Book excerpt: My aim in publishing these little jewels has been twofold: to vent some of the outrageous puns and other wordplay that keeps invading my mind, and to show the world that a limerick can be fun without being "dirty". To quote from the introductory section of the book: "these limericks are clean. For the most part, squeaky clean. Although a mild double entendre does creep in now and then, if you are looking for a rich mudhole of salacious or scatological innuendo to wallow in, these are not for you." Read them, and enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Write Lyrical Limericks & Poems That Pay Has anyone ever made verse pay during their lifetime? Yes. Robert William Service - The Poet of the Yukon. "I may be the only living writer to have made more than $1,000,000 out of writing verse." That quote is from the Scots/Canadian writer of "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and many other stirring verses. His was the poetry of the people and they bought it in droves. If your main ambition as a verse writer is to make money (rather than seeking literary fame) take a leaf from Robert's book - learn to write for regular folk. Words and rhythms that stir emotion, subjects that tug at the heart strings - "make 'em laugh, make 'em cry" you are an entertainer... a weaver of magic moments... a writer to be remembered, recited and quoted. It is my hope that some readers of this book will one day be able to make the above claim for yourself. Whatever your outcome, you will have a lot of fun trying. The pleasure of creative writing can be a reward in itself but if you want a wider audience it pays to know the techniques and tools of the trade. Master the art of poetry from a book crammed with tips and tricks, and masses of examples. Suitable for beginners and children but anyone can benefit. Learn or just read for fun. Have a look inside - it could be for you. There was a young man, a good poet, Was given a field so he'd sow it. His first thought was, "Darn, I'd rather weave yarn, I'm destined to write - I just know it!" Book Limericks for the Ladies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harold K. Gruver
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2013-04-08
  • ISBN : 1479792160
  • Pages : 142 pages

Download or read book Limericks for the Ladies written by Harold K. Gruver and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a Dreckle My grandma Gruver used to call me her “chewed resin.” I’m not certain I’m spelling that right as I’ve never seen it in print. I was always certain that I was special with her. When I would ask for lemonade or some such treat, she would also say “in a dreckle.” It only took a few times to understand that I was waiting for the urge to hit her. When I went to Rome Elementary School, Wally Bryant, who taught me to tie my shoes well after I started grade school, said that she probably meant “directly.” I was always hearing about the shortest distance between two points, but “directly” never really meant as a crow would fly at our house. When I got in the Navy, I encountered “hurry up and wait” in its fullest glory. It did not take me too long after that to figure out that the naval command had made some long-distance calls to Grandma Gruver to really fully understand the significance of the word “directly.” Now I since have heard the old song about the frog who went courting. The Brothers Four related that Frogg took the direct approach. This comes closest to my way of thinking. In my book, I never tell a girl that she is the most beautiful girl in the world if she isn’t. I suppose that there are exact syllable counts for all five lines of a limerick. My feeling is to say the words in the straight way of speaking and still have the rhyme. With the exact syllable count in place, sometimes a person just can’t say it all. My grandma Young, furthermore, would have told me to tell a girl that I love her in words and syntax that she could understand. While many of the poems are not limericks, most are. These are real girls, and in all cases, I like them very much. Nearly all the girls have a copy of the poems I wrote them. Sadly, in the process, some of the poems got lost. To those girls, I am very sorry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poem by the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, illustrated for readers of all ages that will challenge assumptions about falling in love. They’re both convinced / that a sudden passion joined them. Such certainty is beautiful, / but uncertainty is more beautiful still. Love at First Sight is a poem about love and chance and destiny by the 1996 Polish winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Illustrated by Italian artist Beatrice Gasca Queirazza, Szymborska’s poem comes to life in entirely new ways for her readers and for lovers everywhere in this oversized book perfect for gift giving. Szymborska tells of two young lovers bound together in an instant—or were they? As the poem unfolds, the reader’s assumptions—like those of the lovers themselves—about certainty and destiny are utterly upended, revealing the paradox and mystery of fate. Here is randomness, tricks of memory, and chance, where noticing the smallest details of our intertwined lives is more essential than asking, Are we meant for each other? “Every beginning / is only a sequel, after all…”
