Book Lime Rock Park

Download or read book Lime Rock Park written by Terry O'Neil and published by . This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the tumultuous early years of American's oldest continuously operated road racecourse. Lime Rock Park in Connecticut--American's oldest continuously operated road course--came about more by accident than design. Construction of the course began in 1955, when open road racing had been banned in many states, and the use of military and civil airport runways for racing was losing favor with audiences. Dubbed "the Road Racing Center of the East," the park has a turbulent history bedeviled by financial crises, discord with racing organizers, and extensive legal troubles, but it managed to prevail against steep odds. Terry O'Neil's book details this history of mixed fortunes during the first twenty years of the park's existence. Containing more than a thousand images, hundreds of race results, and a wealth of previously unseen material, Lime Rock Park is a thorough deep dive into the rocky beginnings of a crucial site in the history of American automobile racing.

Book The Long Island Motor Parkway

Download or read book The Long Island Motor Parkway written by Howard Kroplick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Island Motor Parkway was constructed at a pivotal time in American history, and it often considered a precursor to the modern highway system. A forerunner of the modern highway system, the Long Island Motor Parkway was constructed during the advent of the automobile and at a pivotal time in American history. Following a spectator death during the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race, the concept for a privately owned speedway on Long Island was developed by William K. Vanderbilt Jr. and his business associates. It would be the first highway built exclusively for the automobile. Vanderbilt's dream was to build a safe, smooth, police-free road without speed limits where he could conduct his beloved automobile races without spectators running onto the course. Features such as the use of reinforced concrete, bridges to eliminate grade crossings, banked curves, guardrails, and landscaping were all pioneered for the parkway. Reflecting its poor profitability and the availability of free state-built public parkways, the historic 48-mile Long Island Motor Parkway closed on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938.

Book Rockland Area Lime Industries

Download or read book Rockland Area Lime Industries written by Courtney C. MacLachlan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since William McIntyre produced and sold the first lime shipment in 1733, lime production has been a vital part of the Rockland area economy. Local farmers dug into a vein of high-quality lime rock running along the coast from Thomaston to Lincolnville. They burned it in homemade kilns and shipped it to cities farther south to be used as mortar and plaster. As lime manufacturing grew in the area, specialized support industries developed, such as shipbuilding, shipping, barrel-making, and lumbering, to provide the kilns with fuel. Thus a full-fledged regional economy was born, and lime was the mainstay. This book explores the tough and gritty lives of those who made their living from an industry that was, and still is, a backbone of the area. Book excerpt: George Price is a retired detective who lives in a quiet, wealthy Long Island community, where the residents jog around the community park to stay in shape. George’s instincts are piqued one morning when a beautiful dark-haired woman quickly gets out of her brand-new black Range Rover, picks up four pebbles, places them on the bench in front of her car, and then quickly walks away. However, as she leaves, she is arrested by police for a hit-and-run. According to police, she was high on drugs and hit a child on a bike. George’s detective talents are sent into overdrive when the local news station reported that an older woman died of a drug overdose. As the picture flashed on the TV screen, George recognized her from the community park. Every morning, she jogged like he did around the park; it didn’t make sense that she would take her own life. That’s when he reached out to a fellow retired detective, Neil Vincent, to get to the bottom of this. In trying to figure out who really killed the woman, Neil and George uncover a drug ring, a drug cartel, the MS-13, and the involvement of the Chinese state secret police and a corrupt FBI agent. The story takes you from Long Island to Mexico to Idaho and an amazing flight to the historic Easter Island west of Chile.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.
