Download or read book Limb Salvage written by F. Langlais and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international group ofresearchers has met every 2 years since 1981 to examine the progress made in limb salvage techniques and the perspectives of this field of surgery. In 1989 the Fifth International Symposium On Limb Salvage (ISOLS) was held in Saint Malo and was attended by more than 300 participants from 34 different countries. The 105 papers presented, grouped under eleven main headings, have been included in this book. Limb salvage has indeed progressed in the years since the first symposium. Initially it essentially concerned tumours and the main aim was to salvage the diseased limb through non-mutilating surgery without jeopardizing the patient's prospects of survival. Now, with a confirmed high rate of 5-year disease-free survival, new goals can be set: improvement of the functional results and of the survival of our reconstructions. How can this be achieved: - By favouring muscle reattachment on the prosthesis, for instance through the use of a bone allograft-sleeved composite prosthesis? - By improving the survival of the arthroplasty through the develop ment of a more biological fixation of its stems? - By limiting the side effects of the necessary adjuvant treatments on the function of the allograft as well as on the fixation of the prosthesis? In addition, limb salvage procedures now concern not only primary tumours (and metastases, which must be treated using the same osteosynthetic and prosthetic techniques), but also reconstructive orthopaedic surgery as a whole.

Book Treatment of Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Download or read book Treatment of Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas written by Per-Ulf Tunn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bone and soft tissue sarcomas represent only about 2% of all malignancies; however, their treatment – with the goal of curing the patient while preserving the functionality of the affected body part – can, unlike other malignancies, only be successful with therapy concepts devised by interdisciplinary teams. This volume provides an extensive up-to-date overview of the specific diagnostics and current treatment standards of these rare entities, presenting the various limb-sparing modalities for patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas with special regard to innovative reconstructive options. The evaluation of quality of life based on validated scores and the individual methods of coping with the illness through creative artistic projects are also acknowledged and integrated in the whole concept.

Book Functional Limb Salvage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher E. Attinger
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-09-28
  • ISBN : 3031277252
  • Pages : 618 pages

Download or read book Functional Limb Salvage written by Christopher E. Attinger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a truly interdisciplinary approach to the topic, Functional Limb Salvage is a ready reference for all clinicians and surgeons treating this patient population, including plastic, vascular, orthopedic and podiatric surgeons and their support staff. The content of this text is focused on defining and expanding upon the importance and, more specifically, the intricacies of the multidisciplinary team approach. Although this is often touched upon or cited as an integral aspect of care, there are only sparse descriptions of the interplay of multiple team members in concert with the care of this challenging patient population. This comprehensive text opens with definitions, demographics, epidemiology, pathophysiology and etiology of the limb salvage patient population, whether due to infection, ischemia or deformity. The multidisciplinary team itself is then outlined, from the who, when and where of the intervention to the role of the individual clinicians themselves; from vascular and plastic surgeons to podiatric and orthopedic surgeons, multiple medical specialties, and with thorough attention to the integral support staff of NPs, PAs and many others. History and assessment are then discussed as a prelude to both conservative and surgical treatments, including wound healing optimization, orthotics and prosthetics, skin grafting, amputation, bioengineered tissue and more. A final chapter on innovation and landmark publications rounds out the presentation.

Download or read book Diabetic Foot written by Anton N. Sidawy and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2006 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding tibio-peroneal occlusive disease and its management is vital in treating patients with peripheral vascular disease. Occlusive disease and the resulting ischemia threaten the viability of the lower limb, particularly in diabetics. Edited by widely-respected vascular surgeon Anton N. Sidawy, this textbook explores all aspects of tibio-peroneal disease, including pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and management of the lower extremity after adequate circulation is restored. It examines risk factors, disease distribution, and general management issues connected with diabetic patients, as well as adjuvant chemotherapy to improve patency of prosthetic bypasses, thrombolytic therapy for failed bypasses, wound healing, and amputations of the foot and leg.

Book New Developments for Limb Salvage in Musculoskeletal Tumors

Download or read book New Developments for Limb Salvage in Musculoskeletal Tumors written by Takao Yamamuro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction of new diagnostic methods including various imaging techniques in the field of orthopaedic surgery has enabled us to make early and precise diagnoses of musculoskeletal tumors. In addition, recent progress in the chemotherapy and radiotherapy of malignant tumors has raised the five-year survival rate remarkably, although complete recovery from these treatments alone cannot be expected as yet. These medical advances naturally stimulate the search for ways of limb salvage even in malignant musculoskeletal oncology. To this pur pose, not only oncologists, but orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, engineers, and biomaterials scientists should work together to design suitable surgical procedures and prostheses using autograft, allograft and biomaterials. The First International Workshop on the Design and Application of Tumor Prostheses for Bone and Joint Reconstruction was held in 1981 in Rochester, Minnesota. Participants were of an interdisciplinary nature in order to establish a basis for cooperative efforts, which have subsequently spread throughout the world. Since then, biennial inter national symposia have been held successively in Vienna, Florida, and Kyoto. Previous gatherings of this prestigious series were open only to a small number of experts.
