Book excerpt: As the Coronavirus ravaged the world economy with the yawning chasm of inequality between rich and poor getting deeper and wider no one seemed to notice the movement south into Africa of swathes of Al-Qaeda hardened committed fighters. It was a unique opportunity to regroup and prepare for the final knock- out blow to the Great Satan and her allies whose economies were already on the ropes. Is life a game of chance? Or is there a guiding hand? Racked by guilt and shame can we truly be forgiven and find healing and even love? Money man Winslow Kirk looks for answers to these questions as he steps out of his comfort zone into the heart of Africa in search of his granddaughter Eleanor whom he allowed to be given up for adoption following a tragic boating accident. A threat note from the world’s number one terrorist who is coordinating the threat to Western countries sharpens his resolve. Can he find Eleanor and will she forgive him? After his wife’s death and his own cardiac illness he begins to muse about what really matters. Like a grain of sand slipping between the two shells of an oyster it irritates and itches. Could a new mysticism emerge like a pearl? Helped by epidemiologist Willow Carr who initiated Camp Hopeful a retreat for HIV positive young people in Uganda Winslow’s life changes beyond recognition. On the banks of Lake Albert in Uganda Eleanor is abducted and taken to a terrorist safe haven in DR Congo. Can he rescue her and receive her forgiveness? Helped also by Kaluki a simple pygmy in the Ituri Forest of DR Congo and teenager Kiabo, Eleanor’s new friend and the leader of Camp Hopeful, Winslow discovers that finding a new faith and mysticism takes on fresh meaning and with it a surprising prize.

Book A Dictionary of Ila Usage 1860 1960

Download or read book A Dictionary of Ila Usage 1860 1960 written by Dennis G. Fowler and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on material collected by missionaries at Kasenga Mission in Zambia. Edwin Smith began in 1901 to note each new Ila word, together with illustrative sentences dictated by his Ila informants. Later missionaries continued this practice, so that in 1959 the author found a mass of over 12,000 items already collected. As the largest body of Ila ever assembled, the dictionary offers much of interest in several fields. The language has a consistent agglutinative structure of great sophistication, logical as Latin, flexible as Greek. The speakers reveal not merely the preoccupations of daily existence in Ila villages a century ago, but an outlook both sensitive and wryly humourous. Feared in battle, fearful of spirits, revering God; hunters of lion and buffalo, polygamous, romantic, ribald in men's company, but highly proper in women's, tender towards children, with a high regard for the arts of hospitality, conversation, and love, the Baila spring with verve from these pages. Appendices list nearly 2,000 synonyms, 276 proverbs, l64 metaphors, 216 customs, 400 trees with their medicinal uses, 290 plants, 150 birds, and grammatical tables.

Book Finding W H Hudson

Download or read book Finding W H Hudson written by Conor Mark Jameson and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An imposing, life-size oil painting dominates the main meeting room at the RSPB’s base in the heart of England: ‘the man above the fireplace’ – always present, rarely mentioned. Curious about the person in the portrait, the author began a quest to rediscover William Henry Hudson (1841–1922). It became a mission of restoration: stitching back together the faded tapestry of Hudson’s life, re-colouring it in places and adding new threads from the testaments of his closest friends. This book traces the unassuming field naturalist’s path through a dramatic and turbulent era: from Hudson’s journey to Britain from Argentina in 1874 to the unveiling by the prime minister of a monument and bird sanctuary in his honour 50 years later, in the heart of Hyde Park – a place where the young immigrant had, for a time, slept rough. At its core, this extraordinary story reveals Hudson’s deep influence on the creation of his beloved Bird Society by its founding women, and the rise of the conservation movement. It reveals the strange magnetism of this mysterious man from the Pampas – unschooled, battle-scarred and once penniless – that made his achievements possible, and left such a profound impression on those who knew him. By the end of his life, Hudson had Hollywood studios bidding for his work. He was a household name through his luminous and seminal nature writing, and the Bird Society had at last reached the climax of a 30-year campaign, working to create the first global alliance of bird protectionists. A century after Hudson’s death, this is a long-overdue tribute to perhaps our most significant – and most neglected – writer-naturalist and wildlife campaigner.
